Lego Pricing

So, I'm interested in getting that R2-D2 model, because, you know, it's awesome. But LEGO has got some serious problems with pricing these days. Well, it always has, but current economic conditions have exacerbated it, I feel.

Currently, our dollar is more valuable than the US dollar, and has been for well over a year (close to two?). This is after a long history of being less valuable, because obvious the US used to be going quite well. That meant that LEGO sets always seemed more expensive, and technically on a level playing field they still probably were. So, you would imagine that the price for things would go down a bit for us, right, make things more level. I mean, I guess there's problems with we don't have LEGO factories here and shipping, I guess that might factor it in.

But, with every Aussie dollar currently equating to around $1.04USD, can LEGO really justify this R2-D2's price of $249.99AUD compared to $179.99USD? For context, that $249.99AUD equals $259.46USD. And this is still excluding S@H's shipping costs (another $40-45AUD). I'm just not sure it's that justified.

On a different, Homestuck note, should interest you to know that in a Livestream about a month or so ago, Michael Guy Bowman revealed he used to like BIONICLE, as did Mark 'Shadolith' Nabors (the guy who did March of the Batterwitch).

I think I've heard the same argument for Lego products in Canada. The currencies aren't much different than the State's anymore, so why are the prices so messed up?

You know Lego's response to this will just be to raise US prices to match. :P

Haha, maybe. Yet probably not, since the US probably has the biggest consumer base, wouldn't be a wise idea to irritate that section of the market, I guess.

Hmm, Canada's always had a similar dollar to ours, still do I think. Hey, yeah, Canada's pretty bad as well, yeah. $229.99CAD. That's particularly messed up since it's the same continent. Is there some sort of border costs to consider as well? Probably, but still, not sure that much. Anyway, it's ridiculous.

Oh gosh I just looked at New Zealand's, our neighbour, there's is $359.99NZD ($294.61USD)!!! That's...wow.

EDIT: As I continue to look, the problem is everywhere, even in Denmark. This is outrageous.

Part of it probably also has to do with the fact that there's no manufacturing plant in Australia. Technically there's not one in the U.S. anymore either, but there is one in Mexico (which can ship overland to the U.S.).

Still doesn't explain Canada. I don't know where to look for Mexican prices, but it would hardly surprise me if they too had to pay more comparatively.
