There were two shooting stars that appeared in the sky before and after the reunion. Sabrina Alberghetti (Sibsy) confirmed on Twitter that these stars represent Applejack's parents. ;_;

^ I read that as well, but I was never under the impression she was part of the show's story team. Is that a call she can even make?

... Well, I guess that settles things.

Who's JJ? And Lauren's quote (on the page that linked to) ended by saying it was never specified. Since she's no longer in charge of the show's story, the current person in charge can make whatever decisions they want.

 

It really doesn't matter to me either way... I just want don't want to mix up canon with fanon.

Since she's a storyboard artist and the storyboards are where that detail was added, then yes, she's perfectly within her rights to tell us why it was added. Whether it's considered canon is another matter, but none of the writers have disputed it. And the final nail in the coffin (sorry if that idiom is in bad taste) is that we were told the whole apple family would be attending, but nopony commented on Applejack's parents being absent.

 

That doesn't confirm them being dead, of course-- could mean they're space cadets for all we know-- but I see no reason to doubt it.
