For me they remind me of The Stone Mask from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

Personal new theory on the MoC's importance, the villain stil wants to use it to build something that can rewrite reality but the mask is in pieces and now the villain, the Toa, and the Defenders/Protectors are all trying to find the pieces inorder to get the entire mask.
