Hapori Tohu
Late last week, LEGO announced plans to start a 'Lead User Lab'. Let's break that down a bit. Based on the article, they consider a Lead User to be someone who sees a need in the LEGO community and creates a solution to fill it, with an implied commercial application. Probably one of the best historical examples of this would be Dan Jezek, who created what ultimately became Bricklink - a website used by many, many fans to buy and sell LEGO bricks, sets and minifigs. LEGO wasn't providing such a service at the time, he saw a need, and created Brickbay to answer it. The plan for the Lead User Lab is to have TLG evaluate potential innovations and decide if it's something they feel is worth supporting, and if so, help the Lead User grow and scale their solution. It seems like an interesting and daunting task, so I look forward to see how it goes when it launches in August!
