Tomato Juice

Hi.       I finally got the opportunity to watch Fireproof over the weekend. Let me say two things about it:   1) This film is a must-see for anyone considering marriage, or even in a long-term relationship. Yes, it can happen. 1a) I don't love Amanda because I get or even expect anything in return. I love Amanda because I love Amanda. (If you don't understand the previous sentence, you haven't found "The One" yet.) 2) Kirk Cameron has come a long way from "Growing Pains".   In other news,

Sonar

Hello.   I realize it's been a solid 4 months since I've posted anything worthwhile. In fact, this entry may go largely unheralded, but I'm not worried.     I've been equal parts Busy and Distracted during this summer. My wife & I planted a garden, and tomatoes were never this much fun growing up. Beyond that, it's been good to scratch out a living, so to speak.   Amanda & I went back to where it all began: Akron, Ohio. Well, we were in Akron to go to Canton for the Pro Football Hall

The Chophouse Rules

Rule #1: Order the beef, not the vegetarian plate. This does not preclude ordering a side of asparagus, though. Rule #2: Don't lose your coat claim check.     I have an expense report to take care of today.   One of the drawbacks of being field personnel is how very far away from your home office you can find yourself sometimes. For instance, when the annual Christmas party came to pass 7 evenings ago for the New Orleans office of Modjeski & Masters, at Angelina's in Metairie, Amanda &am

Above The Law

Word to the wise: no matter who you are, no matter what you do, no matter who your father, mother, brother, or uncle is, no matter where in society you are, NO ONE likes to hear the words "Do you know who I am?", ESPECIALLY A COP.   Read it all: If it really were a serious offense, she should've been ticketed, if you ask me. No one should be above the law.  I think I might actually finish this model today. Scary.     -KIE

Opera Solo

Not that I've actually done anything to the computer, well, I have: we had to replace the monitor. Went from a 19" ViewSonic VX922 at 1280×1024 to a 22" widescreen ViewSonic VX2233wm running 1920×1080[p]. When they say HD, apparently they aren't kidding: text is awfully tiny now.   But anyway, just wanted to drop a note saying I'm 3 years late to the party, but here I am: this entry was typed using the internet channel on our Wii.   And yes, I am using the remote, not a keyboard.   -KIE

Orange Bouncy Ball Of Complete And Utter Chaos

197½ lb., 24.5% body fat   It's been over a week since I've posted, and with good reason: HUNTWYCK IS DRIVING ME UP THE FREAKIN' WALL. Don't believe me? There are shoeprints on the wall beneath my 2005 Astros NL Champion pennant. I can take a picture tomorrow.   There, now that I have that out of my system, time to recap the last 5 days...   The 2006 ASCE/ACI Louisiana Civil Engineering Conference and Trade Show was, well, a bust in my book. Several steps back from the last conference I att

Aaauugh--ust.

Wow, a week and change since I've updated this thing. MAN has it gotten busy around here.   Updating a few previous items: The Ophidian invasion continues. Napa's become jaded to its presence, as usual. I'm still going to BrickFest, although the gathering of stuff has hit a recent snag. I wish it'd get here already, though...the anticipation is eating away at me. No progress on the model of recent. Why no model progress? Because I've been doing something else! Describing a line! *cricket chir

Festival Of The Corn

Those of you hoping to see the republishing of A Treatise on Pasta this year will likely be out of luck: for all the Italian restaurants to be found southwest of Chicago, the nearest Olive Garden (and Never-ending Pasta Bowl) is 25 miles away in Oswego. It makes me sad, but it can't be helped: Amanda's job is a solid hour's drive away from home, and I'm not about to indulge without her.   This year, however, does mark my first time being around a corn harvest.   It's different than it was in t

On The Verge Of A Minefield

The tropical cyclone season for the Atlantic Ocean runs from 1 June to 30 November. (In other words, the 2007 hurricane season starts today.)   Levees in the Lower 9, New Orleans East, and on the Westbank & Algeirs still aren't up to par level. (Thus sayeth the all-wise Mayor Ray Nagin.) Haven't heard anything about east Jeff, which is sad because I, of all people, should have inside knowledge about it.     It's hurricane season.   God help us all.     -KIE

Memoir

There is music and laughter lately And there's prayers and praise There are reasons to be so happy And at least to embrace There's a time to be so angry I'd rather lie in the sun It's the summer of my lifetime I've been blessed with some fun (Ho Ho) I'm a season past springtime (Ho Ho) And my life has gone boom (Ho Ho) Keep my eyes on the Father (Ho Ho) Everything is in bloom. Everything will just get better. Through the seasons I roam When all of the music's over, I will ge

Wii Are Still Waiting

Another short entry, as I have errands to run.   Two major points to address from the past couple of days:   1) Brandy is now 4 or 5 days overdue. 2) I'd best not ever own a Nintendo Wii of my own: I lack the self-control to stop playing.   -KIE

Bracketology: 2007

I'm tucking this away in this category because I was offered tickets to a basketball game tomorrow morning: University of North Texas vs. University of Memphis.   Yeah, baby. March Madness will hit the Big Easy tomorrow & Sunday. I'm not going because I'm holed up with all this work.       But, that doesn't stop me from filling out a few Sheets of Integrity. ("Sheet of Integrity" is a euphism for a completed prognostication of events of the tournament, the outcome of all 63 games.)   I

Delicious Genius

I'm not posting my weight, if only to say it's too much.   Right outside my office door, on the counter across the hallway is the coffeemaker. There is both significance and irony in that fact. The significance is that there is often congregation outside my door. The irony is that I do not drink coffee. I don't know...something about coffee beans has never stroked my taste buds well. Nasal passages, sure: I can appreciate the aroma. But I've never acquired a taste for it, and caffeine just d

Forever Chocolate City

I do have thoughts on Deepwater Horizon, but that will have to wait for later this week. Today is a day of celebration.   It may be disputed as to whether 69th mayor was the worst mayor in the history of New Orleans, but it will hardly be disputed that he was not the right man for the job immediately after Katrina. To have seen one whose platform be based on "business" and "clean up corruption" turn around to hire a tech chief who allegedly pocketed hundreds of thousands on non-working technolo

Why Unchecked Rage Is A Bad Thing.

:wakeup2: This was in the paper today: Bear with me, here. Emotion is a good thing. It makes the colors of one's life much more vivid than without. Anger does have its place in life. There are times and situations that warrant, nay call for righteous indignation. But please, temper that anger; don't let it temper you.   A lot of things happen during the teenage years. Physical, emotional, interpersonal, spiritual...the body is in a unique brand of chaos.   The young Mr. Anderson has now ef

Leaving Chocolate City

(No poissons d'avril here. This is one of the many years I'm not pulling any pranks on the 91st day of the year.)   So sorry I've been away. Been really, really busy with work, and right now, packing.   (Actually, it's my wife & mom packing now: I'm at work until 4:30 PM.)     It's an odd feeling.   When I moved here in February 2005, I was all "country boy coming to the city." This was where I was going to make my fortune; this is where my life was leading me. After Katrina, 6 months l

Modern Art

The allure and statement of stripes and circles is something I'll never grasp. A very circuitously-related opening shot, yes, but a segment from last Sunday's CBS Sunday Morning came to mind, and I had to address it.     Last year, around Halloween, I bought a book. Tonight, 8½ months later, I finally finished reading it.   Mind you, I wasn't reading it consistently: it was only 31 chapters & 2 appendices (and the last 5 chapters were read tonight).   I'm not going to say that I'm proud

Lombardi Gras

Amanda & I saw a parade 43 years in the making tonight. We saw the Super Bowl XLIV victory parade from the plaza outside my office in downtown.   The parade would've been better if the ##### in front of us hadn't been such a #####, but when he left, no one but new found fellow friends were near. (Words fail to describe how "cool" this ##### was.)   What they say is true: no NFL fan base has a love affair with their team quite like the Saints & New Orleans. It's the common thread that

Lullaby

<twelve odd seconds of monotone electric guitar> <8 bars of melody>   Just close your eyes Take in the tune I sing to you For my lullaby can soothe when your friends have moved to Neptune   It must be the way that I can hear you say this now "Don't be afraid, just know that I'll be with you somehow. All of your cries, soon they will drown in my lullabies, Just close your eyes, just close your eyes."   Don't be afraid when the day has become your lion's den. It's pure concentrate your

Omn Omn Om

In case any of you were wondering what happened to me & my blog...   In the tiny sliver of free time between work, gym, time with Amanda, sleep, and prepping for BrickFair, I've been eating a sandvich.   -KIE (nom nom nom)
