Top Ten Tuesday #5: Books I Resolve To Read In 2013

(I'll be doing non-Top-Ten-Tuesdays soon hopefully, but for tonight I just wanted to post a quick entry rather than some other longer ones I have planned) Top Ten Books I Resolve To Read In 2013 The Lord of the Rings, by J. R. R. Tolkien. Unfortunately, I have never read this yet. I've read The Hobbit thrice (at least), and the Children of Hurin once, but never LOTR. I may have read parts of it when I was younger, and I know that I had them read to me as a kid, but I've never read th

Top Ten Tuesday #4: New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2012

(posting this about a week and a half late, because I had finals last week)   Top Ten Favorite New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2012 George R. R. Martin. A Game of Thrones. Definitely an amazing book, and I look forward to reading the rest in the series and possible some of Martin's other works. Michael Connelly. His Mickey Haller, Harry Bosch, and Jack McEvoy series. One of my favorite authors already, and I am quickly making my way through all of his books, having started and finished one yester

Top Ten Tuesday #3: Top Ten Books I Read in 2012

So I know I've already made an entry like this, but I wanted to keep up the Top Ten Tuesdays (even though I missed last week due to finals, unfortunately -- I'll probably post it tomorrow or later this week) anyway. So without further ado...   Top Ten Books I Read in 2012   (In no particular order, really, because it's hard to choose one over the other in a lot of the cases) A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness. I think anything I could say about this I've already said. An amazing book. The Ho

Top Ten Tuesday #2: Top Ten Books I Wouldn't Mind Santa Bringing Me

So on a few writing blogs I follow, there's a "Top Ten Tuesday" meme that people do, where each week they give a new theme, and you give your top ten books for that theme. I decided I'd start doing it here. The list is roughly in the order of most- to least-wanted. I Wouldn't Mind Santa Bringing Me... Les Miserables, hardback, unabridged, preferably leather-bound. I only have an abridged version, and I would love to read the full, unabridged version some day. Lone Survivor, Marcus Lu

Top Ten Tuesday #16: Books I Wish Could Have Sequels

~ :: :: ~ August 6: Top Ten Books I Wish Could Have Had Sequels The Night Circus, by Erin Morgenstern. The Night Circus is one of my favorite books. Actually, this pretty much goes for the next three, too. These four books are, in my opinion, great examples of the “perfect” stand-alone novel. I love the “Circus of Dreams”, experiencing it, reading the underlying plot, everything. This book was amazing, and as much as I’d love for there to be a 20-book-series, it’s ending was incredibly w

Top Ten Tuesday #15: Best Movie Adaptations

~ :: :: ~ July 9: Top Ten Best/Worst Movie Adaptations     These will all be in the “best” category, as I actually can’t think of any horrible movies/books that I have read (thankfully I never did see/read Twilight, etc.). There are also various other movies that I’ve loved (Hunt for Red October, Les Miserables, Princess Bride) but have unfortunately not read the books yet, and therefore did not include them in this list (or the opposite, like Jurassic Park because I read the book rec

Top Ten Tuesday #14: Books Most Intimidating

~ :: :: ~ July 2: Top Ten Most Intimidating Books Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo. Mostly just because of its size. I absolutely love the story, and really want to read this book, but it is a little daunting. The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas. Basically the same as above. And, really, also The Three Musketeers. Jack Ryan series, by Tom Clancy. Simply because they're so many, and mostly large books. They're fast reads, though, so not all that intimidating. Ender's Game,

Top Ten Tuesday #13: Books I've Read So Far

~ :: :: ~     Unfortunately I haven't been keeping up with these, but school and a couple other projects are done so I have a little more time now--plus, I really like this theme. It's been an amazing bookish year so far for me, with a lot of really great books read--38 read so far total. It's actually fairly surprising to me that all of the books below (with the exception of The Walking Dead) I rated 5 stars--something that I don't do very often, so to have 11 books (because of ASoIaF) alrea

Top Ten Tuesday #12: Books to Reread

~ :: :: ~   April 16: Top Ten Tuesday REWIND -- pick a past topic you missed or one you want to revisit! As such, I've chosen: "Top Ten Books I Want to Reread" A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness. This is probably my favorite book. I've read it twice, and I'm definitely eager to do so again. The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. An amazing book that I've only read once--would definitely look forward to reading it again. A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R.R. Martin. Because this series

Top Ten Tuesday #11: Books I Recommend the Most

~ :: :: ~ March 26: Top Ten Books I Recommend The Most A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness. Quite possibly my favorite book. The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. An extremely moving and well-written book, something for everyone. Really gives you an appreciation for reading/books. The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Obvious choice is obvious. Tolkien is the master, and the Hobbit is an amazing book. The Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher. Harry Dresden is perhaps my favorite fictional charact

Top Ten Tuesday #10: Books I Had to Buy...but are Still Unread

~ :: :: ~ March 19: Top Ten Books I HAD To Buy...But Are Still Sitting On My Shelf Unread The Presidential Agent series, by W.E.B. Griffin. I actually bought this whole series, but I haven't read any yet--I'm somewhat of a completionist, so when I bought the first one, thought it sounded interesting, and found out that there weren't that many in the series...I just wanted to buy them all before I started reading them. I have read other things by Griffin, though. Coup d'état, by Ben

Top Ten Tuesday #1: Most Anticipated Books of 2013

So on a few writing blogs I follow, there's a "Top Ten Tuesday" meme that people do, where each week they give a new theme, and you give your top ten books for that theme. I decided I'd start doing it here. The list is roughly in the order of most- to least-anticipated (with the exception of #10).       Most Anticipated Books of 2013 Untitled, by Vince Flynn and Brian Haig. Vince Flynn is, if not my favorite, at least one of my favorite authors. And a new book series, co-authored with Brian

Top Ten Films of 2014

*blows dust off blog* This might be the first year I've seen over 10 films that came out this year... So here's my favorite picks.     Top Ten Films of 2014 Interstellar. This is by far my favorite film of 2014, and IMO the best-made this year, too (that I've seen). This was an incredibly long film that didn’t feel long to me, and that’s really the best thing. Matthew McConaughey was great, Jessica Chastain was great, Mackenzie Foy was amazing...actually I really enjoyed pretty much all of th

Top Ten Films I Saw in 2013

So, this list includes both 2013 releases and films that I saw for the first time in 2013, since I don’t think I’ve even seen 10 2013 films. Still, I saw a lot of new films that came out earlier, and I was really impressed with the films I did see that came out this year, so I decided to make just one list.     Top Ten Films I Saw for the First Time in 2013 Saving Mr. Banks, by John Lee Hancock. I’m really surprised this is #1 on my list, but I saw this right as 2013 closed and was very ple

Top Ten Books of 2014

And now for my favorite top ten list—books! So this was a really great year for me, reading-wise, as I (somehow) managed to more than double the amount of books I read in 2013 for a total of 121 books. Granted, a lot of those were graphic novels or other short books, but still. And so picking a top ten was hard as I had about 40 books that I rated 5 stars. So I’ve grouped some together and also made separate lists for novels and graphic novels.   Note: These lists are for books I’ve read in 2014

Top Ten Books I Read in 2013

This year is definitely the best year book-wise for me. I don’t rate many novels five stars on Goodreads—I try to save that rating for only books that are the best of the best, and as such, I end up rating most books only 4 stars, even if they may be more of 9/10 or 9.5/10, instead of 5. But this year, every single book on this list was a 5-star book, more than I’ve ever had before. But I can still rank them fairly easily (much more easily than the top ten film list), so here it goes.   Top Ten

Tolkien Fans? C.s. Lewis?

Okay, so, I have the following books by J.R.R. Tolkien:   -The Hobbit -The Lord of the Rings -The Children of Hurin -The Silmarillion -Unfinished Tales -A Tolkien Miscellany [smith of Wootton Major, Farmer Giles of Ham, Tree and Leaf, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight]   I've read the Hobbit a few times, though the only thing I remember from it is Smaug with his gold. =P I'm pretty sure I've read LotR at least once, but I'm not sure if I actually ever go

To The Stars

:: ::  My collection of Stars is now complete. Of course, now that means I must review them.   I do hope to indepthly review each with spiffy pictures and all that, but for now [considering I'm not at home and on vacation for the next couple days], you'll have to do with just quick notes on each. For the most part, I am quite pleased. But enough of that. I believe I've already talked about Tahu and Takanuva [both of their masks are the main problem -- too small for Tahu, and should be white

Things Worth Reading

:: ::  I've been meaning to make a list of "things people should read" for a while now, so I guess I'll start now. I know I've forgotten things, and I'm not going to put any links yet [i'll get to it eventually].   Anyway, here we go:   ~ ToM's Bookshelf, Hunger, The Iron Ghost, and Learn to Fly, by ToM Dracone ~ Flux, Through the Eyes of a Vorox, Ignika's Sacrifice, and Merely a Servant, by Nuju Metru ~ Lady Kopaka's Library, Never Forgive, Never Forget, Let the Flames Begin, and Forgotte

The Tower

The Tower   At the sound of his cries I was instantly brought awake. I tried to get out of bed quietly, but it was too late; she was already awake. “I’ll take care of him,” my wife said next to me from under her covers, beginning to rise.   “No, no, I’ve got him. Go back to sleep,” I insisted. She relented, knowing better than to say anything else. Most couples fight about who has to get up to take care of the baby; we “fight” about who gets to get up and take care of the baby.   Eve

The Lincoln Lawyer, By Michael Connelly

[Full review here]   Wow. I really wasn't expecting this to be that good. I saw the previews for the movie back when it came out and it looked cool. However, if a movie is based off of a book, I like to read the book first, so as such I just added The Lincoln Lawyer to my five-thousand-mile-long reading list and didn't think much of it after that. I even bought the book a while back at a used bookstore, but again, just shelved it in favor of other books that I wanted to read first. So last Sunda

The Importance Of Being Earnest

So we read the play a couple weeks ago in British Literature class. It's pretty good.   I'll tell you one thing, though. It's extremely hard to try and explain it to someone in just a few sentences. My first attempt [spoiler'd for those that haven't read it before]:   » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «So there's this guy that has two names, and his friend also has two names [one for the country, one for the city]. Then the second guy takes on of the first guy's names to visit

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Extended Edition

Gallery of images here.   So Friday evening the extended edition of An Unexpected Journey came. That night I skipped NaNoWriMo and watched the film. Saturday and Sunday I watched the Appendices, and Sunday night I re-watched the film again. (Also quick note: this is the DVD version, so number of disks may differ between this and Blu-Ray/3D/etc.)   Man, I love this movie (original review here--my opinion hasn't changed all that much, though overall I think I actually like the film better than I
