BIONICLE "Reboot"

All this quibbling over a reboot or a continuation of the Bionicle story has been getting overdramatic, IMO. I feel I have a much more simpler take on it that doesn't negate the 10-year story we've all deeply loved:   Think of the "reboot" (as it will inevitably be) in terms of an alternate universe (despite LEGO probably not ever admitting it's like that or doing a "crossover."). Look at Marvel and DC comics. They all have a main universe for most of their stories, but then they've branched out

Anubis Head

I guess if there was ever a time to build a Stargate MOC, now would be it: Granted, I an not actually going to get the set, but that headpiece is cool. (The $10-11 one, sure, I'll get that. This theme seems really cool, and I never got any Adventurers sets.)   -CF

Bold Colors: Building Contest #3

Vote! Announcing... The Chocolate Froggy Bloggy Building Contest #3: Bold Colors!   That's right folks! I have just recently (read: today) obtained a fantastic set of prizes and am not hesitating to announce the contest in which to get these out of my hair. Another building contest is underway and I hope each and every one of you enters. This is especially timely because I know some of you are home from college and near your collections, able to build.   The theme: Mix-and-match clashing

The V V Odradek

What started off as this and evolved here and there finally emerges from the docking bay complete and victorious, ready to put some fleebnorks in their place! I present to you a Vic Viper, this being NoVVember of course.   The Odradek: More pictures can be found here once the folder is moderated. Until then, feast your eyes on these. Including the pilot.   Flickr.   ***** Back in January I ordered 10 1x2x3 white slopes. I must have clicked 70 though, because that is how many I got. When life gi

90s LEGO

I got a blast from the past tonight as I tidied up my room a bit, which meant taking the instructions from the recent LEGO sets I've gotten and putting them in the box with all my other instructions.   Normally that would just mean I'd toss them on top and move on, but the box was a mess. So I took everything out, arranged the instructions by paper size, and put them back in an orderly fashion that will leave room for more instructions throughout the year (but probably not much longer).   Whilst

Mosaic Evolution

I've been doing Bionicle-themed mosaics ever since I collaborated with xccj and Nukaya back in 2010. At that point we had a handful of members on our side, mailing in pieces even if they weren't attending BrickFair.     We've since made a few more mosaics via collaboration, but a constant has been the base I've displayed them on.   In 2010 it was two plywood boards that would fit 3 baseplates by 3 baseplates.   In 2011 it was combined and trimmed into a long 2x6 board:     Then in 2013 it was

Zomg Cat-beast, 9

I really want a pic of the cat beast from the first 10 minutes of the movie (not elsewhere), since it was so detailed and awesome, for my computer wallpaper...but no luck so far. (Yeah I was super excited when I saw that.)   Overall, the movie rocked. Action, characters, settings, plotness, awesome CGI and visual effects, and the different...things (various beasts).   But I also could not get enough, for 80 minutes really isn't that much, especially for the teenage/adult target audience. In Appreciation for Paperbacks

Don't misunderstand me, I'll buy a paperback book out of necessity most of the time. I just bought Redshirts and will probably buy Mistborn soon too, in paperback. Usually that's all that is around if I'm buying something new because by the time I get around to buying it to read it's in paperback.   But when a book as wonderful as American Gods comes into my life, I want to make sure it will stay with me for decades and still be intact with every read.   -CF

Baltimore Comic Con '16

Baltimore Comic Con happened last weekend, and I went with 55555 to join in comic merriment, find some deals on comics, and meet Bionicle comic artists Stuart Sayger and Pop Mhan.   We succeeded in all three.     When it comes to the comics, I found some deals on Skottie Young variant covers! I didn't think I'd be able to afford the Young variant for Doctor Strange, but it was only $3.33! I also got Charles Soule to sign the She-Hulk variant, which was an awesome run and ended too soon. And whe

Famous for a Day

Ever see tabloid headlines or hear a gossip news clip about some celebrity you normally would never hear of because they aren't in a band or movie? Somehow "celebrities" get all the press without having done anything to garner your attention? Yet somehow they get followed around and sometimes paid for all the focus.   Now, I can just as easily ignore gossip as the next person who doesn't care, but sometimes things enter my field of vision. Which gets me thinking, why them? Who decided that this

Getting Rid of Bionicle Canisters

I've had my Bionicle pieces stored in bags for years now, and the canisters they came in are taking up space. Does anyone want them? Let's say $1 each plus shipping.       Message me.   -CF

Rhymes with Bubble

Great things come in pairs. (That's a thing, right?) This year has been a good year for doubles for me. Double Green Lantern sets in January (for this), double Jurassic World helicopters in July (one a gift!), and most recently double San Diego Comic Con Trans-Neon Green Skull Scorpio masks!     Yes, they all looked super-cool at BrickFair (my second convention of the year, but that double might turn into a triple in October), so I checked eBay again and found a great deal on two! Imagination Situation

Today I participated in a LUG display at a local museum's Halloween event (I went as The Eleventh Doctor, btw). It was plenty fun displaying MOCs and interacting with the public, as it always is. But there was something about the way people looked at the creations that seemed a little short-sighted: They couldn't reach their creativity past licensed themes.   Example One: The Rancor. I displayed a six-module long Pharaoh's Labyrinth, including a hollow pyramid with a tomb and an excavation attac

Avengers Vs X-Men!

My LUG gets to display at the LEGO Store(s) in the area, and April was my month for Tysons Corner's LEGO Store in Virginia. While Marvel's Avengers Vs X-Men comic event was mediocre in the summer of 2012, I can't deny the inspiration it gave me:         Topic here. Brickshelf gallery here.   Can you guess which part is my favorite?   The Avengers are fighting the X-Men because they want to apprehend a mutant (Hope Summers) who they believe might cause destruction to humankind if the Pho

Spoils of War

And by "war" I mean running a Bionicle event by myself for 30 children.     Unfortunately, I didn't get any leftover purple limbs. But I got plenty of trans-green and keetorange shells, which means I won't have to buy a second Protector of Jungle (though should BrickLink some of his swords).   Of course, parting out this grab-bag of leftovers makes me think I need to sort out my Bionicle collection again before I actually put these to use. I've got a box full of scrapped MOCs to disassemble b

Sending BFair MOCs!

I am sending out the second batch of BrickFair MOCs today before work. Sorry it's taken so long--between two people receiving MOCs for two conventions, there was a lot to sort through and a lot of addresses, usernames, and MOCs to match up. And return shipping.*   So if you sent something to BrickFair or the convention in May/June, expect your MOC to arrive soon (unless it already did!). Unless these are your MOCs, in which case I have no idea who they belong to and I need you to PM me. (Otherwi

Costume Time!

Help! I can't choose what costumes to wear for Halloween celebrations!   I'll be wearing one on Saturday for a Halloween LEGO event, and then I'll need two costumes for BrickFair public hours next week.   I've got three options: Eleventh Doctor, Indiana Jones, and Jayne Cobb. Jayne works best for Saturday because I know I'll be more comfortable in a t-shirt. It works best overall because I have a trimmed/maintained beard, but I'll ignore that feature for the other two. But the Eleventh is also e

BrickFair was Lovely

What a fantastic time! I miss you all. I love you all.* I say that ever year. But hey, there was merriment, there was fun, there was friendship, there was building, there was a bit of everything. I will definitely remember this year fondly like I do every year.   And boy did I had a good time with everyone! Granted, I didn't get enough time with everyone, and I like to take my "everyone" in separate chunks, but putting everyone together in the same place really makes BrickFair feel like a LEGO C

Books on CD: Cheating?

Is listening to a book on CD versus reading the actual book cheating?   Basically, it took me 5 or 6 years to read The Fellowship of the Ring. I didn't pick up The Two Towers for about 3 years later, and I'm still reading it off and on a year and a half later. I'm a big believer in reading the book before seeing the movie, but my roommates had other plans. (But boy are the extended editions awesome.)   I figure I can spend about $35 on the trilogy on CD and take about 13 hours listening to the b

LEGO Trading Cards!

Way way way back (like two years) an AFOL made a Kickstarter project for LEGO trading cards, called STUDS, to showcase various renowned builders in the fandom and their MOCs, among other aspects like conventions, publications, and achievements. Through a few LEGO conventions I was able to collect a handful of cards from people who had contributed early and had their own card(s) or packs to sell. Fun stuff! They finally made them available to the public and I eagerly ordered some (splitting shipp

So Many Names

There comes a time every year where I must place some words on a badge for BrickFair. Luckily my name and location is not required, and not necessary for me because I already have engraved bricks with my name(s) on them. So now it's just a matter of putting some cool text there.   But I don't know what I want to put on them!   My first thoughts were "From Outer Space" for the location badge, but that's not nearly clever enough. I was also thinking of having "DFTBA" be one of the bricks, but I'd

A Talkback-- Piraka Fusion Instructions

Hey! I made instrucions for my Piraka Fusion MOC. Folder Here I would specifically suggest: The Hand and The Staff   And since it seems that the Talkback Topic isn't properly linked at the time, go ahead and use this to give any comments you might have until staff does something about the link. (But, staff, please do fix it, and don't rely on this) (hey, Omi, how about you start one?)   I would also like this to be the place for discussion for my MOC in general.   (The News Article)

Death Star Roll II

Remember quite a few years ago when Binkmeister did a Death Star Roll at BrickCon?*   Let's do that again at BrickFair VA! Except it won't be someone's sacrificed Death Star set. We'll build a sphere out of Stay and Play bricks and find a slope somewhere to roll it down. Maybe put the finishing touches on it at Adult Swim when everyone is already riled up and ready to see something wild.   Let's remember this post in July right as we're ready for BFVA.   -CF *IDK if it was even his or at BrickC
