The Force Awakens (spoilers within maybe)

So, I saw that new Star Wars movie today. I wrote up a whole big review, but it's too profanity-laden to post (not because I disliked the movie; I just swear very casually off BZP), so instead I'm just going to say it's very good. Of the two extensions of a pre-existing franchise I've seen this year, I would definitely, definitely recommend TFA over Jurassic World. Unlike JW, it doesn't rely on nostalgia to sell it; it actually took the time to make a good movie in the process.   okay but one sp

The Damage Report

The total for my birthday Bricklink splurge came to $113.36, including shipping.   That's..... actually less than I spent to build the Micro Manager. Guess I didn't actually splurge any more than I usually do.   Got some good pieces, though, including a bunch of Technic beams and such in assorted colors, which will lower my dependence on black or grey versions of them, thus allowing me to be more colorful.   I also got a bunch of tan, so maybe I can attempt my Gundam in true Buster Gundam color

The Bad Dinosaur

I will cotton to being a bit of a curmudgeon, I suppose.   But the more I see of this movie, the more I hate it. How could the company that made Finding Nemo then go on to make such bland, uninspired animal designs?

Teridax

I've been thinking a lot about Bionicle lately. I've been thinking of the potential it had, the joy it brought me, but sadly, also its decline into something I had a harder time appreciating right up until the unsatisfying end.   One thing that bugs me the most, though, is what happened to Makuta.   In the early days of Bionicle, everything was much more spiritual, much more mystical, much more intriguing. Obviously, as Greg's "Sizzle and the Steak" thing was all about, it couldn't remain that m

T. rex skeleton

okay I promise you this isn't just more complaining about the T. rex skeleton from the lab set. Or, at least, not quite.   see, Izaak told me he would only consider my complaints valid if I could build a more accurate skeleton with a similar number of pieces. I was intending to do so anyway because I wanted to prove to myself that my claims weren't empty, but he fueled that fire. And so that's why I created this:     Now, it's not perfect, I'll admit that. I'm second-guessing the cheese slope o

Science Museum of Minnesota LEGO Building Contest

Are you a FOL who lives within reasonable distance of the Science Museum of Minnesota? Because if so, they're holding a building contest for anyone ages 4 and up. (Don't worry, the contest is sectioned into age groups; there aren't going to be four year olds crying because an AFOL crushed them.)   As this isn't an official LEGO contest, there are a few odd rules (gluing pieces is allowed??? for SHAME) and there is the catch that you MUST be able to bring your entry to the Science Museum in case

Rules Inconsistency

The rules ban the discussion of politics and religion, yet for some reason discussion of the Great Pumpkin, arguably an equally controversial topic, is still allowed? Explain yourselves, staff.

Relevant to recent discussions

(I edited out a racist word, though I left the N, and I hope that's ok.)   Basically, don't bring up MLK Jr. until you know EVERYTHING he stood for, or you'll bring him up in a way that would have him rolling in his grave.   I'm leaving this entry unlocked, so I hope y'all can behave.

Reclaim the Word

For too long the word "dinosaur" has been used to mean "something old and inferior", and it's time this stopped. Dinosaurs did not die through any design flaw of their own; in fact, they were in their prime when they went extinct, with some of the biggest and most powerful members of their current clades emerging within the last few million years before their demise. (Tyrannosaurus, for instance, may have had the most powerful bite of any creature.) Rather, they were unceremoniously terminated a

recent lego purchases

got the SPACESHIP in the mail today and it was every bit as wonderful as advertised. surprisingly rare for LEGO movie sets, I couldn't spot a single error in how it compares to the one in the movie. As near as I can tell, it's 100% accurate.   Also got Flurr because she was interesting and stood out amongst the newest wave of mixels. She's a neat little build, though the eye placement is slightly strange.   I ordered the Flexers too but they shipped late due to them selling quickly enough for th

Random WIP

This was originally supposed to be an interpretation of Mutran's Rahi/Matoran hybrid to fit the theme of Karda Nui for the LEGO convention things but its looking entirely too Rahi-like for that so idk what it is anymore. I'm pretty happy with it so far, though. (i dont know why i felt the need to build something for that theme considering i dont have the money to send anything to the conventions anyway)

Random Little Pixel Things

Takadox might be getting a body and maybe even a little animation done. idk these arent for a kit or anything; I just haven't done a lot of spriting in years and felt like getting my sprite on.

R.I.P. my sweet dril signature

while I have always fully enjoyed my old banner for its sheer hilarity at the end of my posts, especially in an argument, today felt like a time for change. So now, let us instead usher in an age of a more niche, yet equally fitting, banner.

R.I.P. Leelah Alcorn

She was the latest in casualties of a violent, hateful war against people like us and her death is heartbreaking in its horrificness.   If this entry is not allowed by BZP rules, please let me know, but it had better be a darn good reason.

Quetzalcoatl Doodle MOC

this is mostly run-of-the-mill but these are probably better wings than in any constraction set to date, or at least those made with CCBS (definitely better than dragon bolt's trainwreck)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

an anime that is definitely worth a watch, at least in my opinion.   I'm about halfway through my most recent rewatching of it and between the art style in many scenes, the music, and the compelling story, i think it's an excellent show/series/story/whatever.   For once I am being completely unironic in what I say. Take that to heart. This is so important to me that I am abandoning my usual speech patterns to get my point across.

PSA

If your story about the genus Brontosaurus being revived is accompanied by a tail-dragging, swamp-dwelling, camarasaur-headed, wrinkly elephantine monstrosity then I hate you.

Project Movie-Accurate Micro Manager: Part 1

ok so the one thing bugging me about Lego Movie sets is that none of the Micro Managers in them is movie-accurate (unless you count the live-action sequences, but if that's the case canon Metalbeard is Minibeard from the Sea Cow.) So what I'm trying to do is first piece together a Movie-accurate Micro Manager in LDD, then, once I've got all that figured out, order the necessary pieces off Bricklink and make it a reality. If there's any demand for it, when I'm done I might post the .lxf so others

Premier Membership Giveaway

So, thanks to the convention circuit, I have a free six-month premier membership. However, I already have Lifetime, so I may as well give it to someone else.   I don't want people just saying "give it to me", though, so to enter, please give me a one paragraph essay about Chrom in the comments below. Winner will be selected randomly, so don't feel pressured to perform here; write whatever Chromes to mind.   (That said, MLA citation is a nice touch.)   Let's say you need to get your essays done b

Potential Akamai 2015 Starting Point

The grey Technic bits should be an almost-perfect stand-in for the gearbox piece. I haven't tested the stability of it IRL because I obviously can't, but the torso should be fit snugly against the gearboxes, even if it doesn't have a fixed connection to it. Hopefully the new heads will lift the face out of the "scarf" enough to not inhibit movement. The colors are messy because I wanted it to be clear I was using pieces from all three. The gold pieces are obviously stand-ins for the new gold arm
