Stupid

Why do I drink coffee and then wonder why my stomach is all grouchy and gross-feeling?   Why do people pay money for someone else to give them pre-digested answers when they could just figure it out for themselves, and gain so much more in the process?   Why are we so caught up in petty dramas, material acquisition, and pretending to be something we're not?   Why do we sabotage ourselves and hurt the people close to us?   Why?   It's stupid. :annoyed2:   [Edited to add comment thread to en

Strange Beds

Have you ever spent the night in an unusual place without originally meaning to?   How about in your car in a nowhere town far from home? In your car in front of your house? On a foul airport bench at London-Heathrow? On a sofa in the basement of your school?   I have.   And then there are the places you let people convince you to stay, or that you thought were a good idea. Like sleeping alone in a little two-pole tent while everyone else stays in the camper, and waking up with a terrible ne

Straight Talk

Novelist Juha Seppälä From an interview in the latest Suomen Kuvalehti, translated by me. How's that for Finnish melancholy? Lord, what a downer. But words of truth nonetheless. <o> <o>

Still Settling In...

My blog needs a snappy name. Item one.   I need to sign my rental contract for on-campus housing so that I can finish my grant application. Two.   I need to get basic school supplies without overextending myself financially. I still lack even looseleaf paper and binders, and have no idea how I'll afford textbooks, rain gear, boots, and a bicycle. Three.   I need to study dendrology. Thirty tree species native to Finland, identify and give Latin names. Four.   I need to work on my plant colle

Stars Revamped

I added black tires to the shoulders and hips, revamped the sword, filled in the back, and built a custom head for the 2001 Hau. Similarly, custom head and back armour added. (Sorry, no more pictures till I get new batteries for my camera.)

Speed Racer Is A Ridiculously Good-looking Movie

The #1 reason I bought it on DVD: Emile Hirsch plays the title role. He also played the lead role of Christopher McCandless in Into the Wild, one of my all-time favourite films. These shots are from the respective movies' "epiphany" sequences, where the characters come to the end of their journeys -- a literal end in the case of the latter.     Speed: I don't know why I'm doing it anymore. Racer X: You don't climb into a T-180 to be a driver -- you do it because you're driven. ~ Royalton:

Sourdough

I bake almost all my own bread these days. I use a sourdough method, which gives the bread a deliciously tangy flavour and significantly reduces the need for added yeast.   The sourdough method is actually very simple and requires only a minimal amount of effort. The easiest and fastest way to get started is to take a bit of ready sourdough starter from a friend, like I did. You can also take a piece of store-bought sourdough bread, grind it into crumbs, and add water and flour. I've even made

Sorry, Rene

I changed my name, but I didn't join your thing.   With this name, don't be surprised if I suddenly get chased by a wild unicorn or snatched up by a rogue rainbow.

Songs Of The Kalevala

I listened to the same song 30 times over the weekend. I can now lip-sync it, which is pretty impressive for a guy who's memorized the words to maybe five songs in his life.   Venematka by Jean Sibelius   Vaka vanha Väinämöinen laskea karahtelevi tuon on pitkän niemen päästä, kylän kurjan kuuluvilta, laski laulellen vesiä, ilon lyöen lainehia.   Neiet niemien nenissä katselevat, kuuntelevat mi lienee ilo merellä, mikä laulu lainehilla, ilo entistä parempi, laulu muita laatuisampi.

Social Lego

I went to Q's place today. He had "Keetongu" with him, who was visiting our town, Oulu, from where he lives, all the way across Finland. I took my self-MOC and my winged scarab along with me to show them off. We had tea, hung out, and talked LEGO for a couple of hours. Q took pictures of my MOCs together with some of his stuff on his desk, then a picture of me and Keet posing, and then I snapped a couple shots of Q with his Eagle mk 3. (I didn't have my camera - couldn't find it at the time I wa

So Much For The Why

Now for the What.   The Me Project is about learning to say "I" taking responsibility for myself knowing myself being good to myself making every hour of every day count. My friend <daydreamer> was kind enough to send me a very relevant symbolic image:    I do so love cute, funny animal photos.   -BC

So I Visited The Library Last Week

Here's what I borrowed:   Numerology: The Magic Mirror of Numbers; What Your Dreams Reveal; Thus Spake Zarathustra, by Nietzsche; Your Future Now, a book on divination; Self-Esteem; Restricted for Children: How to Protect a Child from Media Trauma; and a CD, Brand New Day by Sting.   I probably won't get around to reading all of them cover to cover, but I'll read enough to satisfy myself.   Numerology's been an interest of mine for a while now. Even long before I got into it, I always

So I Finally Broke Down And Bought Half Of The Mistika

The Toa Nuva.   Onua is the best by far. I still have him together, which is amazing considering that I made the purchase yesterday. Tahu and Gali didn't last an hour before the urge to start cannibalizing them for MOC parts became irresistible. Several of the new parts have found their way into my new, Dark Mirror -inspired inbrickations of Tuyet and Nidhiki. As cool as Onua is, he would have been even cooler with a silver pelvis. So Happy Right Now...

Today was my birthday. I turned 26. My day was blessed with many wonderful surprises. I feel so fortunate to have so much love and abundance in my life. Sure, I had to hold back part of my rent this month to be able to eat, but that doesn't change the fact that I am provided for materially with everything I need to sustain and enjoy life. The outpouring of good wishes for my birthday from acquaintances, friends, and loved ones has made me feel truly rich. I am amazed at how many good things have

So Far From Home

I've been feeling really homesick lately.   (My mother is turning 50 soon, and I'm mentally preparing to write her a letter. By hand! And snail-mail! )   Not only missing my family in Vancouver, but my real home as well.... somewhere far, far from here.... likely much closer to the great central sun of the Milky Way, I would think. Yeah. Really.   In other news, I'm hearing encouraging things about the prospect of an imminent public announcement on the facts about your E.T. visitors. That'll

Siilivaara: A Revealing Farewell

With the passing of the vernal equinox, a new season arrives to the blog formerly known as [siilivaara | Hedgehog Hill]. The venerable, memorable hedgehog theme, which has continued on these pages for precisely 33 months, is no more. It began on August 23, 2006, with the adoption of the self-deprecating title "The Hog Hole," which was soon changed to the ambitious "Hedgehog Mountain" and later morphed into the more modest "Hedgehog Hill." This entry bids farewell to a theme that has served its t

Signature Art, Old And New

Old:   This is a still frame from Waking Life. The scene is a film within the film, called "The Holy Moment." The protagonist walks into a movie theater. On the big screen, two men discuss film as a medium, not for storytelling, but for framing reality in such a way that the moment on screen becomes a "holy" moment -- THIS moment. NOW.   The men decide to have a holy moment of their own. They look into each others' eyes. The experience is so moving that the man on the right has to wipe away

Sierra Leone Scam Letter!

Look at this, dear! My goodness me, I have never received one of these before. . . Good grief! Is there no limit to how far people will go to take advantage of the gullible? Yeesh.   'Course, I wish it was real.   <o> <o>

Sharing

You know how my job involves kids, right? Well, the two youngest are boys, aged 6 and 8. I'll call them "Sam" and "Todd." Sam goes to preschool and Todd is in 2nd grade (school starts at age 7 here). Their mom, my employer's wife, no longer stays at home like she did when I started there; she's now working at an outpatient clinic. This means I have a lot more responsibility, but also a lot more freedom. Gradually, in these past few months, I've gotten to know my work environment and the people i

Seven Years

That's how long I've been a member of BZPower, as of April 17th. I guess that makes me one of the real old-timers, lol. Old enough to remember the cyber-attack of '02 that shut this place down for a month. Old enough to remember Tufi Piyufi's earliest mark of notoriety, when she innocently posted pictures from a LEGO merchant's catalogue that set off one of the first set-spoiler frenzies ever. Ah, those were the good old days... before we had spoiler tags or even a real spoiler policy. Hey, h

Selling My Collection - Exciting Times

Two decades is a long time to do anything. I've been building with Lego bricks for two decades and two years. I've never had a "dark age." It's always been part of my life. I've fully enjoyed every minute that I've spent creating MOCs and I have no regrets over the time and money I've spent on the hobby. I only wish there could have been another life somewhere to just go all out and bring to fruition all the awesome Lego projects I ever wanted to do. Alas, this is not that life. In this life, I

Saying Goodbye: A Retrospective

I return to the blog known as Siilivaara with so much to say. But let me, I pray you, begin with the not so pleasant news.   The W+E Project, that great and shining endeavour so full of promise for the future, has been terminated.   Now, I am not here to complain that life's not fair. I have no bitterness about this. The fact of the matter is, this is the way it had to go. I have chosen a different path, one which the woman who was to be my wife does not wish to follow.   I am exceedingly tha
