Bzpower / The Others

I was getting rather annoyed at the apparent lack of progress on the forums.   Getting Premier Member permissions for at least a month fixed that.   Now, what to blog about?   ...Oh, yeah. I watched a very interesting movie earlier today:   Released in 2001, The Others (PG-13) revolves around a woman, Grace (played by Nicole Kidman), whose husband, Charles, left to fight in a war long ago, leaving her alone with her two photosensitive children, her daughter Anne and son Nicholas. Upon the arriv

Obligatory "Ooh, New Theme" Entry

Only after I finally became accustomed to the default theme did the theme change back to a more classic feel. It's the story of my life, I guess.   In all seriousness, I do like the more Bionicle-themed graphics. I'll probably post in the theme's talkback topic soon about some nitpicks, but I'm glad to see some change. If there are more updates to the site coming, I hope they're as good as this.

Techna

This is my second try at making an RPG for the BZPower TBRPG contest. In my opinion it's faaaar better than my first try, but I'd still like some feedback.

Progress On Nanowrimo

I have only the first two chapters planned, but I have a bunch of homework to complete and the HF horror story to write. D:   I have a feeling I'll end up flying my NaNoWriMo story by the seat of my pants. I know my two main characters and I have ideas in my head for the various main events, but I don't have the actual plot written. At least trying will mean more writing experience.   Speaking of writing, I need a writing playlist...

Guitar

I had my first guitar lesson today. I now have a diagram of all the open string notes, know the technique behind playing notes, and know how to play on the uppermost string an open E, F, F#, and G.   However, there's a problem. When I play the strings...   They.   Keep.   Buzzing.

I've Finished Reading Brisingr

In my humble opinion, Brisingr, the third book of the Inheritence Cycle by Christopher Paolini, is the best yet in the series. I've heard criticisms that the book was far too long-winded and that all of its first part was nothing but filler; having read through the entire novel, I have to disagree. The "filler" was necessary, lest Christopher Paolini end up with a rushed book that would not have been nearly as satisfying. With all the descriptions, I found myself that much more connected with th

Of Ultimate Frisbee, Basketball, And Laryngitis

Two days ago was the last day of my Friday co-op's autumn semester. Prior to the last meeting, my gym class would focus on one sport or game for two classes and then switch to the next sport or game; today, however, was an odd day out, so the members of the gym class voted to play Ultimate Frisbee.   Gym had already held two classes on Ultimate Frisbee. During the first class we had learned frisbee throwing and catching techniques; during the second class we had played a game. My team hadn't don

Homework Short Story

For my literature class at a co-op I attend, my latest assignment was to write a short story that included both all the required vocabulary words and examples of metaphors, similies, and personification. Those requirements, coupled with my desire to return to writing original science fiction, led into this story. I'm posting it unedited; I will probably perfect it at some later date, but right now I want to focus on NaNoWriMo.   For the record, I love Harvard Blight's name; don't expect me to ch

"Ѕtreet Corner Symphony" By Rob Thomas

'Tis one of the best upbeat songs I've heard. I'm glad my mom reminded me about it tonight; she, my youngest brother, and I were browsing a video site via Roku and she pulled up "Street Corner Symphony". I love, love, love it.   In other news, my younger brother loves, loves, loves "What Is Love" by Haddaway. Oi.

NaΝoⱲriΜo -- Bad News And Good News

The bad news -- yep, you guessed it -- is that I'm throwing in the towel.   I guess the sky-high goal of fifty thousand words in thirty days was out of my grasp from the start. I was woefully unprepared, and my story caught itself in a tedious cul-de-sac of forcing myself to write words that aren't there. I was relying far too much on being able to write by the seat of my pants, and what's more, extend that writing into fifty thousand words; the result: overextension and a lot of filler text. Pe

LSO COT Short Stories Contest Entry

My entry for the LSO COT Short Stories Contest, Eternity, has been posted (and at the last minute, too -- it's good to see I haven't lost my touch). Reviews would be appreciated.   Good luck to all else who have entered the COT branch of the LSO Short Stories competition!

Hurricane Sandy

My neighborhood, being a ways inland, avoided the destructive power Hurricane Sandy unleashed on the New Jersey shoreline. We only received moderate gusts and light rain throughout the night. Nevertheless, through standing outside a minute and sitting for far longer beside an open window, I could feel a difference in the winds; they were not the capricious breezes of springtime or autumn, but winds with a purpose.   I offer my condolences to those who were hit hard by the storm. Hopefully recove

I'll Be Gone For Christmas

If ooooonly in myyyy dreeaaaams...   I won't be online for the entirety of both Christmas Eve and Christmas; I don't want the internet to get in the way of enjoying the holiday with my family, and I definitely don't want it keeping me from fooling around with my loot come Christmas day. I'll probably be back online on the twenty-sixth, the day the free Premier perks end.   Until then, a merry Christmas to those BZPower members who celebrate the holiday.

Happy Anniversary, BZPower!

Four score and eleven years ago, BZPower came into being. Today, we celebrate its birthday by thoroughly abusing our anniversary Premier Membership privileges for the next week, especially when half of us should be doing real-life work. (Hey, it's the sentiment that counts!)   In all seriousness:   Thank you for all the fun times you've given us, BZP, and here's to better years ahead.

I now have a content block for them, and thus need some.   No, don't just post them here because you feel sorry for the little newbie blogger that is me -- I'd rather I earn them. 'Tis what all the cool kids do. B)

Album Released With Friends!

Probably over a year ago now, I was talking about releasing a solo instrumental album. While that plan hasn't yet come to fruition, a couple friends and I have completed a group album that I would like to share with you all.   We've named our group Forward. The album is called Interminatis (pronounced "in-ter-min-ah-tee"), which is Latin for "endless". It's a concept album; we have a companion booklet included with the download that should help clarify the plot a bit.   The album is six dollars,

The League Of Authors

Obligatory plug.   Nulie runs the League of Authors through entries on Velox's blog. The setup is very nice, the challenges are inspiring while vague enough for different people to have different interpretations -- all in all, this deserves some more attention.   If you're interested in participating in creative writing exercises, reviewing stories so others can review yours in turn, etc., definitely check out the rest of its blog entries.

Go Flyers!

In lieu of the Philadelphia Eagles performing well (which they decidedly aren't), and in light of purchasing NHL 09 for my sixteenth birthday a while back, I've switched from watching football to watching hockey. Now, I've seen the Philadelphia Flyers on not-very-good days; sometimes they'll go all out through the first part of the game but fall apart in the latter part, letting the other team come from behind to win. That was not the Flyers team I watched this night.   Note that the Flyers have

Writing Homework

I finally have to write a short story as homework at my American Literature co-op class. I knew it was only a matter of time I actually never saw this coming. But that doesn't dilute the sweetness.   The requirements are twofold:   1. I have to use a list of vocabulary words, twenty-eight in all, from the chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird my class has reviewed thus far. The words range from ones I already use on a regular basis (e.g. facade, prowess, obscurely) to words I know well but have nev
