Things I've come to realize over the past weekend

Wisconsin pays little heed to such things as 'continuity of climate'. I support this claim with the evidence of it being 55 on Thursday where I was, and 20 with three inches of snow on Friday. In the James Bond movies, Q is now essentially Otacon, only British and with (presumably) less love of anime. November novels are nice. Writing as you like without making it into a race and juggling it with college is nicer. Jiro Ishii gave Kyugo Shindo a deLorean and his daughter an orange jacket sol

Anonymous Kittens

While discussing the state of the BZPRPG, I made it clear to folks that if they wanted to provide feedback anonymously, they could contact me and I would post it for them. One person asked if I could anonymously provide kittens; I responded that unfortunately I couldn't post it in the topic unless the kittens could be contextualized in the RPG, but that I could make a blog post.     I'm a man of my word, and I hope this person feels safe that they were able to anonymously provide kittens to th

What if... there were a Fire Emblem livestream

So, moderately-known fact: I am a nerd who's been on the Fire Emblem train since FE7 hit America, and I am also a nerd who speaks Japanese and has a 3DS capture card. One thing led to another led to the FE:if LE getting ordered.   Since I know there's a decent amount of FE fans here, would there be interest in a stream of the game after it releases? Depending on when my copy actually arrives, the stream would probably be the last weekend in June, bleeding over into July. (There will almost certa

[Over, archive up] Fire Emblem stream tonight

Just a quick reminder: I'm aiming to stream Fire Emblem Fates at about 7 PM PDT tonight (so 7 hours from now.) We'll see how many folks show up - if only one or two people can make it (or it's a no-show) I'll probably just stream my own playthrough; if a decent number of people make it we'll try and start a new game together.   Channel's over this-away; I'll bump this blog entry when it's live.   Update: Live now! Stop on by if you're interested.   Update 2: It's over now! Archive is available h

Yeah probably, I was running on two hours of sleep that first day. Oh yeah it was Hink

Blackout

I don't know if any of you are familiar with the Newsflesh trilogy, by Mira Grant; it's a trilogy focusing on a group of journalists (bloggers) in a post-zombie-apocalypse society. It's got realistic near-future tech. It's got news reporting. It's got politics, and I mean campaign politics, not just government conspiracies and the like (though there's the fair share of those as well). It's got multiple perspectives. It's got zombies by the truckload.   In short, it was written for me.   The

Absence

Hey! As you may have seen in my sig, I'm away from my usual digs (and computer) between now and July 22nd. (And if we're being honest - I was swamped enough at work in the leadup to this that I've been less than active the past few weeks as it is.) That's for good reasons - family wedding, vacation - but ones that involve flying across the country.   The end result is I'm going to have much more limited access to BZP during this time. I'll still be around when possible, but just a heads up th

This is not okay

Today I have Read the Red Wedding in A Storm of Swords Watched the final episodes of Cowboy Bebop Watched "The Angels Take Manhattan" in that order.   Shakespeare only wishes he could pack this much tragedy together.

Redmond

A few entries ago I mentioned I'd tell you all when it sunk in that I was going to move across the country to work for Microsoft.   Having just moved across the country to work for Microsoft, I can inform you all it has yet to sink in.   (Apartment's quite nice, though.)

A Piece of Life Advice

If anyone ever asks you if you want to get up at 5 in the morning to drive 150 miles to take on other universities in puzzles, trivia, coding, word association, and (most importantly) Lego building, say yes and don't look back.   I might work at Microsoft, but man I love Google sometimes.

48 Hours

Until I'm moved in on the West Coast (give or take an hour). Tomorrow will be spent packing, Saturday will be spent flying.   I'll let you all know if I ever manage to actually wrap my head around the fact I'm moving across the country to work for Microsoft.   (As an aside: 28 notifications while I was gone, most of them the Mass Effect topic. I really ought to check out the new multiplayer stuff.)

Ace Attorney 5

I could write out a long talk about the graphics, or the fact it's kind of disappointing they seem to have dropped Apollo, or the new systems. But there's really only one thing worth noting:   Winston Payne's younger brother is straight-up Gangnam Style.

What better way to celebrate America Day...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5mS0FnXrB0   ...Than with a new Doctor Who teaser?   (PS: Out of town right now, as I have been off-and-on recently; will make a blog post in the near future about all the crazy stuff going on.)   (PPS: Happy AMERICA DAY)

Flexing Those Reviewing Muscles

By midnight tonight, I need that ECC contest review done, plus another 15 or so short stories read and briefly critiqued for a different forum.   This of course begs the question, what on earth is good music for a critiquing montage? I mean it's not exactly high-action.

Life Right Now

I was going to post a funny gif here, but I can't think of any to represent "busybusybusybusybusywhyyyy"   So yes. Second-to-last week here at MS, moving back on the 25th. Semester starts on the 2nd. This is probably going to be the first year I can say I'm less busy during school.   On a somewhat more BZP-related note, I've actually got an epic idea that will probably get written. No, really! It's got protagonists (three of them, or four, or six, depending on how you count) and antagonists

Back from vacation. Also, Fire Emblem streams.

I think that title pretty much sums things up, but may as well expand on things. I'm back from vacation! It was nice to get away from things (even if it involved far more travel than I like), but as always, it's over too soon. On the plus side, I now have decent internet again. Back to the grind! (There's also a couple BZP-related projects I hope I can talk more about soon.)   Fire Emblem! Fire Emblem Fates is now out in Japan, and my copy of the game is sitting in a FedEx depot somewhere hav

Graduation

Last Saturday, I graduated from college with a Bachelor of Science (and honors) in Computer Science, a certificate in Japanese, and - thanks to a combination of my parents being able to save up for the past twenty years, a scholarship, in-state tuition rates, and a couple of internships - no debt. (The fact that last bit makes me the exception rather than the rule is a bit depressing.) I had a few research-related things to take care of Monday and Tuesday, but now - it's over. Like legit done

Back in Washington

Two flights and one last-minute apartment switch later, I'm back in Seattle (well, Redmond) for another summer at Microsoft!   As always, if you're going to be around the area anytime between now and August, drop me a line and I'm always down to hang out.   (Also: No I'm not on or in any way connected to the Xbox team, and I can guarantee whatever XBO joke you're about to make, I've heard it a thousand times. )

Visiting Valve

There are two things I took away from my time at Valve:   1. The people who work there are incredibly driven, intelligent, and dedicated to what they do. The work environment they've established for themselves enables them to guarantee that anything that goes out with their name on it is something they are immensely proud of.   2. Their hallway art is way better than ours:

Meanwhile, in... they're just making countries up now

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqZOzoSEQa4   (As always, annotations = subs)   (Also, if you've been wondering where I've been the past few weeks, the answer is largely 'covering TGS and other Japanese game media'. At least LEGO news is usually in English...)

A Pretty Good Day, This

All things considered? Today? Pretty cool.   First off, it was my first pay day at Microsoft. Corporate policy and social etiquette prohibit me from saying how much I made, but I can provide a visual analogy for you to draw your own conclusions from.   Second, speaking of Microsoft, work went pretty well. Things are getting done, commitments are getting sent off, the whole nine NDA'd yards. Couldn't ask for a much better summer job.   Third, I've started to put together some ideas for a trip
