An important post

I try not to get involved with flare-ups here in the blogs, because I know there's a good chance that if I do I'll wind up with my foot in my mouth and egg on my face. This isn't an exception to that - instead I'd just like to say something important that I hope people already know but I'd like to reiterate given there's been a lot of LGBTQ+ discussion lately.   If you are LGBTQ+, I support and accept you. As someone outside of these groups, I don't have the personal experience that many other

Back To Work

And the new semester is underway. My classes all interest me (computer engineering, MATLAB, C++, algorithms, Japanese, neurobiology in communication), but it looks like I'm going to be busy, especially since I've got a big opportunity coming up next month I've got to prepare for.   (This has been your cool story of the day.)

The Greatest Night Of My Life

Got to see Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett (the Rifftrax/MST3K guys) riff a pair of old 70's school-education films live, followed shortly by John Hodgman hitting me in the shoulder with a 5-Hour Energy.   Milwaukee, you ain't half bad sometimes.   EDIT: ohmygod and new Toonami was on. New Toonami. Actual new skits with Tom. They reviewed Mass Effect 3. Is this real life?

The Ambassador (Mass Effect Very Short Story)

In the interest of full disclosure, this isn't really a story so much as a scene from a very long, involved story I'll probably never write. And it's only really 90% Mass Effect.     Swoosh.   Ding.   “Welcome, councilor. Please select your destination.”   “Citadel Embassies.”   “One moment, please…”   Rumble.   Jane Myers waited for the sound of the elevator whooshing up the side of the Citadel to fill her ears before passing the datapad she held over to the man standing next to her. Mass Effect 3: Fanservice

Wait, sorry, typo up there. I'm being told the actual title of the DLC is "Mass Effect 3: Citadel". Sorry for the error.   But anyways, since it was getting good reviews and it's the final DLC for Shepard's trilogy, I grabbed Citadel earlier today and played through the main story (there's a good amount of post-story stuff too.)   It's... kind of weird. The whole thing has an air of festivity to it, so if you're looking for some great revelation about the Reapers, this really isn't for you. But

Mass Effect Fans, I Apologize For This Ahead Of Time

Shepard: What do you think about the people we're picking up? Joker: Well, about the ones you went out with last...   Now, I didn't pay much attention in Sunday school, but I'm pretty sure they said something about watching out for guys who can shoot fire from their hands. Just putting that out there.   Gali's great, but are we sure Tali hasn't got a long-lost sister or something? 'Cause I mean with the mask and the name and the switching between "nice" and "unholy terror", I'm seeing a resembl

Once More Unto The Breach

Long story short: I got hired back for another summer at Microsoft next year.   Now to get back to Wisconsin, get my stuff together for junior year, and move into my new apartment. Once things have settled down in a couple days, I'll probably make a blog post going into this crazy week in more detail.   'Till then, back to packing.

Holiday Absence

Just a quick FYI blog entry: I realize I haven't been around much lately. This is due to it being a much busier holiday season than usual (flying across the country, family health issues, etc.) Anyone who's waiting on me for something, feel free to poke me with a PM, but I may not be able to respond immediately.   Thanks! I'll put up a somewhat happier holiday post tomorrow.

[9] Days

...That is the time you will be given to finish 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors before its sequel Virtue's Last Reward comes out on the 23rd.   So, about eight months back I made a very excited blog post to celebrate the announcement that Virtue's Last Reward was coming stateside. As we are now nine days out from its release, it felt appropriate to return my sig to Sigma and Phi (sorry Forum Mentor Newb banner) and repeat my explanation of the series:     So yeah. If you have a DS,

Me and You and Every Elemental Robot We Know

So. I guess today (or tomorrow in this timezone, but whatever) is the day. NYCC. News. Official media. Maybe even some story. (I know, I know. Leaks. Let me make at least some pretense for playing by the rules.)   I realized something weird the other day - my posts haven't been super up on the whole thing. I played skeptic for quite a while (Mak, anytime you want to go edit my posts to add a crow-eating postscript, be my guest), and when the official official word came down, I pretty much just o

BrickCon

Hey! BrickCon! It's happening this coming weekend!   I might be there Thursday evening, I'll probably be there Friday evening, and I should be there Saturday and Sunday. I'll probably be wandering around with various groups/people, but say hi if you see me!

Out Of Town

Just a heads up that I'll be out of town from now until next Thursday in order to get bitten by bugs, rained on, and generally have a very good time, with particularly limited Internet access from Monday to Thursday.   I'll try to log in at least once a day on the off chance anyone really needs to get in touch with me, but, uh, let's just say it would not be the best time to ask me deep philosophical questions requiring a two-page response.

The bad news: a lot of the pieces are just variations of a few different major motifs.   The good news: said major motifs are really, really good.   Now back to listening.

You take the bad with the good

(Disclaimer: Re-reading this in the morning, this got kind of heavy and ventish. The important bit is - 2013 could have been better, but a happy new year to all.)   So 2013 is almost over, huh. I've been reading people's 2013 posts; a lot of people seem to have had a rough year. Or maybe that's not totally accurate - it seems like a lot of people had a really eventful year, and not always in a good way.   Looking back at 2013, I see a lot of good things that happened - and I see the bad stuff th

Ten Years

Ten years ago, I snuck onto my parents' computer while they were out and used their e-mail to register for a little site called BZPower.   Today, home from uni, I briefly hopped onto their computer to deal with investments for the coming year.   If you need me, I'll be in the corner, curled up into a ball and mumbling about how time is really, really weird.   --------------------------------------   But seriously, this is more like a two-year anniversary for me, or maybe a three, given those sev

Oh, We're Back

Good to see things are all sorted out. I've seen plenty of forum hackings in my time, and I followed the pattern with this one that I've learned works best - just ignore the hacker and leave it to the staff. It's an attention game.   ...Granted, that was made easier by the fact it's darn near impossible for me to contact other BZPers outside of here. Which I really ought to remedy, so for future reference you can find me on Twitter as BoltGSR.   In other news, life continues as normal, with t

How To Be Me

Step one: open mouth.   Step two: insert foot.   In all seriousness, I've really been surprised by the positive reaction to "Fractures". It's kind of embarassing to get all these compliments when I know not only could I have improved it quite a bit, but that there are better writers on BZP (it's just that some of them don't write fanfiction).

Various Important Things

First off: The Chima RPG Collab Contest-esque Thing (Contesque?) is heading into the home stretch (well, more accurately, it tripped over its own feet about a foot away from the home stretch and kind of laid there in the street for a week or so), so if you have any general ideas to input, this is your last chance! A full RPG opener post should be getting cobbled together in the near future.   Second off: I'm bluer. Whoops. You won't see me around Q&A or Comics as much anymore (insert "when

GSR Translates: Moko's Silver Blade MOC

First things first: an introduction! The LEGO and Bionicle fandoms go far beyond the English-speaking world, as we all know. To try and bridge the gap a bit, "GSR Translates" will be a series of blog entries where I translate (with permission as appropriate) things from the Japanese LEGO and Bionicle fandom.   Today's entry is... this!     This MOC, Silver Blade, was created by Japanese MOCist Moko - you can see their Flickr account here. It's been making the rounds on social media, so I reache

Brevity is the soul of wit, and I am not a clever man

Just remember, the sign of a truly great contest is that its title gets automatically cut off by IPB and leaves the host looking silly until someone higher up the staff ladder can clean it up.   (All LEGO RPGers, or Chima fans, or both, or neither but nonetheless interested folks: go give the topic a read! This is something that depends on all of you to make it a success.)
