Languages

They're fascinating, aren't they? Kinda reminds me of what George Orwell pointed out in 1984... that a language can basically shape your way of thinking. Now, granted, he was talking about something far darker than what I'm about to go off on, but it's true: language can be a very interesting window into a culture and the culture's sort of general common ways of thinking.   Now, I believe most of us on this site have English as our native or most fluent language, so that's rather difficult to a

Kinds Of Wine

So we had guests yesterday and so today my parents were drinking the leftover wine.   And my sister was like, "That's beer!" and I said, "No, it's wine," and then as a joke I added, "It's like what you do all the time."   And then my sister said, "There are three kinds of wine. There's the wine that you drink, the wine that's in the jungles, and the whine that's like waaaah, waaah."   And then I'm like, "... the wine in the jungles?"   Oh and I also forgot to mention that my sister lost her

Kids Say The Darnest Things

Yep. 'nother one 'bout my sister.   Quick (and thankfully entertaining) backstory before the first quote.   We're in Florida and my dad brought along his newest toy to help us out: a Garmin GPS system. Never need a map again!   So it's suction-cupped to the windshield and warbling out directions, and my Dad says, "You know, I heard on the radio that some people love these things so much that they give them names and say they want to marry it or something, and you know I can sort of see... I m

Kids Say The Darndest Things

They do. Seriously.   My sister graduated from daycare yesterday, and they had a really cute ceremony with all the graduates singing and putting on plays and even getting little diplomas, and naturally there were plenty of hilarious little preschooler antics.   But first, an anecdote from even before that.   Young children have the ability to be amazingly honest and amazingly unflattering. We were having lunch (or dinner, I forget) the other day, and I was sitting next to my sister, so I purp

Kanji

AAAAAAARGH STOP DOING CONFUSING AND UNCONVENTIONAL STUFF THIS IS HARD ENOUGH TO LEARN ALREADY.   (by the way I'm not actually watching this show; I came across the Japanese title on Wikipedia or something and wuz like, "Wait, doesn't that say "uchuu"? Not that that's a really useful or practical word to have in my kanji vocabulary... I kinda just know it. XD)

It's Up

Click the banner (or this link. It's really up to you)   In case you haven't been reading this blog, 52-pickup is a comedy I've been writing, and a project I've been pretty excited about.   The chapter up right now is one I already posted in this blog, so nothing new so far... depending on how quickly I can work on chapter 5, I might put chapter 2 up during the week. I do want to stay ahead, though. It's always dangerous when what I've posted has caught up with what I've done.   Well, I hope

It's Summer

IT.   IS.   REALLY.   FREAKING.   HOT.   So I've been watching a lot of anime to pass the time until, you know, college. Been averaging around 40 eps/week these past few weeks according to MAL. I marathoned ef - a tale of memories (excellent), finished Soul Eater (bad ending, fun series), finished Spice and Wolf (didn't get what everyone was talking about till episode 5, after that it was good), finished Higurashi (nightmares), finished Nanoha first season (better than I thought it'd be fro

It's Ovar! (reprisal)

The title is in reference to the fact that I named a previous blog entry the same thing.   AP EXAMS ARE OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111!!1ONE   WHOOOOOHOOOO!   SEVEN STRAIGHT HOURS OF TESTING TODAY BUT BOY IT'S OVER.   That means first and last period every day I'll have NOTHING since I had an AP class first and last period every day! The only classes I have left are Computer Programming (haha, class, not really) Latin (don't do too much) and English (essentially my only class, then).   P

It's Ovar!

Aaahhh man I just finished the PSAT... FINALLY out of the way...   It really was pretty easy, I'm pretty confident.   Finally, FINALLY over... *sigh of relief* ooooh...

It's Finished

Well, in actuality, not quite. There are a couple things I want to tie up with the epilogue, and I'd like to end on a bit of a different note. The epilogue really could have been just chapter 21, but considering that it's less than half the length of any of the other chapters, and all the main story threads were concluded...   In any case, final chapter of 52-pickup.   Although I thought I was done writing it over spring break, I ended up still making several revisions last night as I thought

It's Done!

Oooh... finally...   About three to four straight hours of working (read: slapping it together). Felt like a lot longer. I think my fingers have blisters... >~<   Get the feeling B_D will prolly win, hers is pretty spiffy. Well, I gave it a shot. My AC attendance record is still (I think) perfect.   *checks* There's 8 (Eh, not bad, considering how long ago this was) 9 (Sucked. If you're really curious, dig it up yourself. I refuse to link to it.) 10 (I like it, but in hindsight, shoulda

It's About Time To Blog About - Something -

What is there to blag about?   Lessee... well, today, after a week of not working properly, my wireless tablet mouse died for good. We ordered a new one. In the meantime, I have to use a cruddy -normal- mouse... I'm just so used to the custom sensitivity level that it feels weird using a normal mouse.   Though because it really doesn't work anymore, I got to dissect it!     It's not superficial damage either, I checked and the clicking component itself has stopped responding.   What else?

It Was So Cold Yesterday...

That I ended up with a cold myself. Which is why I'm home today.   Sick days are way overrated... I woke up with every muscle in my body sore and a very much complaining stomach, not to mention a headache that feels like a cannon being fired at my skull from inside my brain and no appetite whatsoever.   *mutter* If I can see my breath inside the bus, then one would assume that the driver should TURN ON THE HEATER...   But after some Tylenol I feel better. Though I'll still be taking the stair

It Was So Cold Today...

You know why they have those cracks in the sidewalk? Because when it's hot in the summer, the concrete in the sidewalk expands, and when it's cold in the winter, it contracts, right? That way there's room for the little cracks in the sidewalk to get bigger or smaller as the concrete blocks contract or expand with the cold or the heat, all respectively. So the concrete doesn't instead crack or buckle as it heats and cools alternately.   Well apparently they do that in roads too, it's just had to

Is Australia A Continent?

See the news article reminded me of this...   For one thing, I definitely would not at least consider that the country Australia makes up the whole continent, since that's not including New Guinea and Tazmania and stuff but then we're also forgetting New Zealand and whatnot which according to Wikipedia is on its own continental shelf. But it's... not really recognized as a continent in any textbooks. So... what do we do about poor unclassified New Zealand?   I always thought we ought to for al

Irrational, Imaginary, Incredible

How truly wonderful the universe is can be seen in this simple equation:     While reviewing for my math final, I found this in the text book. And quite frankly, it's astounding. Five of the most important numbers in mathematics related, two of which are irrational, one of which does not exist in the real system.   e, the natural base for exponential functions, the limit as x goes to infinity of (1+1/x)^x. e^x is the ONLY equation whose derivative is itself. The slope of e^x at any point is

Imponderables...

Why do we always have to go to bed when we're not sleepy and wake up when we are? I mean, seriously, I'm half dead in the mornings.   Also, why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways? I mean seriously, that's really odd. It's not like that that thing with cars and shipments and ships and cargo, that's really unrelated and ships can carry shipments and cars can take cargoes. The parkways driveways thing is seriously strange tho.   In the meanwhile, yesterday I went and ate at Chili's. Ne

If Only...

*sigh*   It's not going too badly, though, but I'm having to clean off the ends of the lines by hand.   So, it's election day! Pretty exciting. MSNBC is open in another window. (not paying much attention XD)   I really should be working on college stuff. =<

Identify This Font!

The above is the speedometer for my car.   For the life of me I cannot remember what font I used, and all the type layers were quite unwisely rasterized. I've seriously gone through every single font on this computer without success... I can't imagine which one it would be! I keep getting the feeling it's one of those gothic fonts, or something, but I can't place it... and I have no idea how a font on this computer could have disappeared... oO   If you could identify that font, that would be g
