BLOGARITHM CONTEST #7: The Wisdom of Sumiki

Some of you may be wondering about me and my sanity due to my various profile updates, which have, as of late, been getting around outside BZP. There's now a Wisdom of Sumiki tumblr and twitter. (I cannot take credit for the operation of either of those accounts.) I also feel as if my activity on here has waned a bit, and I'd like to take a step towards rectifying it. Thus, I decided that it's time for another Blogarithm Contest.   Let's talk about my status updates for a minute - specifically,

Hero Factory, Re-Imagined

Hey you. Ever wanted to read a story where Hero Factory was rebooted to be gritty and dark and with humans and stuff?   Well have I got news for you.       (also go enter that contest)

i accidentally a thing

it's nearly two o'clock in the morning and I just wrote nearly 1,400 words about a gritty human Hero Factory AU (which I've been meaning to do for a good while)   question is, would anyone actually be interested in reading a story with a re-imagined Von Nebula, grizzled veterans, psychological manipulation, gender bends, and plot twists?

Music Favorites IX - Lowell Liebermann's Nocturne No. 4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDcHnKh2Ouc   Lowell Liebermann is a modern pianist-composer from New York. His music, a blend of traditional structure and profound invention, has made him one of the most popular and most often-played of modern-day classical composers. As a pianist, a good chunk of Liebermann's works have been for or include the piano, including three Sonatas, eleven Nocturnes, and his most famous piece, the epic Gargoyles.   His fourth Nocturne is one of my favorites - although

A Christmas Tradition, Part 2

In addition to the annual series of Sumiki-vs.-Sumiki's-Dad Nerf battles, we have added two new nuances. Now, instead of just shooting each other, there is a rolling chair that is called "the tank" and is actually kind of ineffective but it's fun to roll around on.   The second one involves a tiny duck that squawks the name of a certain supplemental insurance company three times when pressed. It's been around for years and I'm surprised that it hasn't run out of battery. In any event, we use thi

It's a Christmas Tradition

My dad and I have a tradition: every Christmas, we clear out a room to shoot each other with Nerf guns and laugh maniacally when we hit each other’s heads.   It’s a Christmas tradition because the room we do this in isn’t clean like this at any other point.   War will commence shortly. Wish me luck.

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town: An Objective Analysis

The Christmas season is upon us once again, and you know what that means: it's time for Sumiki to comment on another creepy Christmas song, this disturbing not due to its implications but because of just the lyrics alone.   You better watch out You better not cry You better not pout I'm telling you why: Santa Claus is coming to town.   So, we need to watch out (presumably for our own safety) and repress natural emotions because of someone who is coming into the town. Sounds like the bad guy of a

Music Favorites VIII - Camille Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71fZhMXlGT4   Saint-Saëns was a French composer and organist known primarily for three pieces - The Carnival of the Animals (which he refused to have published during his lifetime for fear of tarnishing his public image), his first Cello Concerto, and this piece - which is arguably Saint-Saëns' most famous composition, having been transcribed and adapted extensively. The opening twelve notes on the harp represent midnight chimes, the xylophone represents rattling b

Music Favorites VII - Kaikhosru Sorabji's Pastiche on the Hindu Merchant's Song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_L5nc_G9Gus   Kaikhosru Sorabji was a composer who was known for writing long and technically demanding pieces, mostly for solo piano. His early music blended styles from well-established virtuosos. His later works use dissonant polyrhythms and vague tonalities and is generally inaccessible. Most people who have heard of him know him solely for one piece - the four-hour, twelve-movement Opus Clavicembalisticum. (Opus Clavicembalisticum is not even Sorabji's longes

Music Favorites VI - Charles Ives' A Son of a Gambolier (from 114 Songs)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow1dznt-RrU   Charles Ives stands at the forefront of American music. Ives was not a full-time composer and his works were largely ignored during his lifetime; publishment of his pieces was done out of his own pocket. A millionaire from his insurance business, Ives' tireless promotion of his own work was the only thing that ended up saving them from languishing in obscurity. Of his oeuvre, only perhaps a dozen are to my liking, but those dozen are special pieces i

Music Favorites V - Josef Hofmann's The Sanctuary (from Impressions)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cLvxekUaps   Josef Hofmann belonged to a category of pianists that can only be classified as super-virtuosi. But how good was he? Sergei Rachmaninov himself admit to practicing 15 hours per day to get to his level. (Rachmaninov's hands were immense, and Hofmann's were slightly below average.) Hofmann also flawlessly played works in concert that he hadn't as much as seen for nearly three years.   His immense talent at the piano - especially in his ability to play r

Some people here disappoint me.

But for every one that does, I can name five that make me proud to be here.   BZP is supposed to be fun and should not be sullied with intolerance. I wholeheartedly applaud those who stand up against it.

Tuesday Tablescraps - 8/13/13 - The Hinklebot

The Tuesday Tablescraps make their triumphant return with the Hinklebot, a fusion mech that appeared at BrickFair VA '13, only to have its pilot replaced by a Kevin Hinkle minifigure.     | | | | Last semester's schedule meant that I rarely - if ever - had free Tuesdays. I've still built stuff, but I haven't posted them, much to my regret.

Music Favorites IV - Percy Grainger's In Dahomey

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWgwPpb42kM   Percy Grainger is one of the only Australian composers that people talk about. He wrote a significant number of pieces, including orchestral and vocal works, but his piano output is his only significant contribution to the modern repertoire. He was known for his dislike of Italian musical terms and notations, so instead of using them he often described how his music should be played in explicit English instructions - so explicit that there leaves litt
