Ode to Dental Floss

"It's iconic. It's platonic. It's absolutely supersonic. I just love dental floss - don't you?" -Sumiki's Dad, 2013   Use it for laundry to hold up wet pants Use it in salad to clear out the plants Use it with music to help yourself dance Dental floss.   Use it with Windex to clean your garage Use it on sidewalks and make a mirage Use it on muscles to help them massage Dental floss?   Use it with lawnmowers to hold up the blade Use it on tonsils with your eggplant maid Use it with ducklings whil

Summer Catches Up

-----Just like the past few days, it was I-90 all the way. It was the last of the Rocky Mountain foothills, as South Dakota brings with it the prospect of true plains where the speed limit of 80 almost seems low once you get used to going such a speed. We know that Wyoming can be a pleasant state, though it wasn't much so this time—but the "fajitas" weren't upsetting us.   -----We were to South Dakota pretty much before we knew it, and within two hours of our 10:00 departure had made it to Rap

Music Favorites IV - Percy Grainger's In Dahomey

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWgwPpb42kM   Percy Grainger is one of the only Australian composers that people talk about. He wrote a significant number of pieces, including orchestral and vocal works, but his piano output is his only significant contribution to the modern repertoire. He was known for his dislike of Italian musical terms and notations, so instead of using them he often described how his music should be played in explicit English instructions - so explicit that there leaves litt

On Attaining Goals

I have been a member of BZPower for nearly seven and a half years. Every time speculation on new spinnies arises, I am there on the front lines campaigning for to become an official spinny.   Today, my fellow members, I am proud to say that I have succeeded in this illustrious endeavor.   I came to this web site with a mission, and now that mission is complete.   Spin on, my friends.   Spin on.

The Great American Road Trip - 14 - Sacramento And San Francisco

Today, we set off towards San Francisco, stopping in Sacramento at a place called Gatsby's Diner for lunch. We knew that it would be good when the lady that took my dad's call said that, yes, they were open, and that us coming would be "groovy." It then really set in that we were in California.   Gasby's has charm, and is interesting for the fact that the food is prepared right in front of you - actually, to put it more accurately, in the middle of the restaurant. The only explanation I have for

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town: An Objective Analysis

The Christmas season is upon us once again, and you know what that means: it's time for Sumiki to comment on another creepy Christmas song, this disturbing not due to its implications but because of just the lyrics alone.   You better watch out You better not cry You better not pout I'm telling you why: Santa Claus is coming to town.   So, we need to watch out (presumably for our own safety) and repress natural emotions because of someone who is coming into the town. Sounds like the bad guy of a

Contest #3 - Canceled

Toxic Waste Contest #3: Home Improvement! ENTRY PERIOD ENDS TODAY - PM ENTRIES NOW! A lot of people think BZP's old, slow, or just downright deficient in a given category. Whether the complaint is on a recent downtime, the "need" to upgrade forum software, and getting a brand-new server. Unfortunately, these are very far-fetched ideas.   Now Black Six has announced an upcoming radical change to BZPower itself, the biggest thing on the site since the merger, it is claimed. No one really knows w

Is Bacon a Vegetable?

We got on the road at 10:30 bound for Harrisburg. We wanted to avoid going through the gnarly traffic of New York City - we consider that a trip unto itself, to be done at an undetermined later date - so we decided to go up all the way to Scranton before cutting through upstate New York to Connecticut.   At 11:30, we entered the parking lot for the Harrisburg Senators, the Washington Nationals' double-A affiliate. The Senators' stadium is located on an island in the Susquehanna River, accessible

Cryoshell Song Review

1: Creeping In My Soul: You can really tell that this song was written for BIONICLE. The rapping lyrics interject every now and then, giving the song a nice eclectic mix, though I'd prefer it to be all non-rap.   2: Bye Bye Babylon: The "uncensored" version, it really evokes the "epic-rock" genre, though the lyrics really don't make too much sense. It's the longest song on the album at 4:37. I like the electric guitar solo around 3:40. It also ends abruptly, something I don't quite like.   3:

The Great American Road Trip II - 6 - Big Utensils, Little Flavor

Does anyone even read these?   Our first stop of the day was in Northfield, a short drive from Minneapolis and a cute college town, home to crosstown rivals Carleton and St. Olaf.   What should have taken thirty minutes took instead about fifty, as the Interstate down was closed.   Every state has its own type of road construction, but Minnesota has its own special brand of messed up. The signs that should have denoted the complete and utter closing of the Interstate were cryptic, and we were
