The Sumiki's Dad Caption Contest: Week 2

Is it really a "contest" if I'm not announcing winners every week?   Oh well. I'll catch up on it next some time. I'm too tired now.   Today's picture was taken June 3rd, 2012 in Spokane, Washington - and yes, that is a reserved parking sign.   "It's called ... yump."

The Strangest Pieces

I swear this isn't a music blog.   (Okay, it kind of is.)   I've listened to a wide swath of different pieces of classical music, and I occasionally come across some things that are just ... well, strange. We're talking off-the-wall levels of goofy here.   -----La Monte Young - Piano Piece for David Tudor #1   This piece doesn't even have a proper score, just a sheet of paper telling the performer to come out onto the stage with a bucket of water and a bale of hay for the piano to drink and eat.

The State Of Bionicle: Year One

I have recently been informed that people have been PMing various people about the current state of BIONICLE: Year One. I'd like to clarify a few things:   1) It's still going. 2) My acquisition of more memory or a better computer is the only thing stopping me from starting the actual game work. 3) If you have any questions or concerns, PM me. I'm more likely to know what it is you want to know about Year One.   That is all.

The Staff Inflection

-----There were no clouds when we left West Des Moines, and post-mediocre waffles, we set out for downtown. The fastest route was through the city, and along the route lay the stadium of the Iowa Cubs, Chicago's Triple-A affiliate. With no game on the docket, we waltzed past the silent front desk people and straight into the team store, where there was no one there. My dad's timid "hellos" would have echoed eerily had the store been larger.   -----Most of what the Iowa Cubs sell is just regul

The Spokane Word

-----All online evidence pointed to us having a five-hour drive day ahead, which is a good amount for an average day on the return journey. From Olympia, we were to travel north to Tacoma before splitting off of I-5 and joining I-90 as it traverses the state eastbound. But there wasn't anything to really break the trip up, as five hours in the car isn't daunting so much as the thought of going that distance with no significant breaks in the action.   -----Tacoma is the home of the Tacoma Rainier

The Snow!

This is getting to the point of ridiculousness.   Where I live, we never get snow. Ever. Well, I say never, but in truth, we always get a few flurries every year. Never enough to use a sled that's been in the basement for over five years.   Until this year.   It's snowing hard right now, and for the fourth or fifth time this year. Added together, that's almost twenty inches. We're usually lucky to see one inch.

The Road So Far

This was perhaps the most uneventful day one of any trip. We didn't know if we'd even get on the road today, as we had to wait for a package to show up through FedEx before we could leave. FedEx said that the package would arrive at 8:00 PM, so we spent the morning and early afternoon leisurely packing, thinking that we'd have to delay our plans by one day.   The FedEx guy showed up a little after 3:00. We sprung into action, immediately panicking. My mom was in the shower, so my dad and I did e

The Rise and Fall of Artemis Fowl

Or: Why The Eternity Code was the best Artemis Fowl book Spoiler warning for ... well, the entire thing. I'm not marking individual spoilers; it's been long enough since the last book was released. Also this is really going to be rambling, I can just sense it. Consider yourself warned.   Ever since a friend loaned me the first book in the series, I'm a fan of Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series of books. The characters and re-imagined concepts of Colfer's stories captured my imagination.   As I

The Return

As Brickshelf returns, I can finally post the MOCs of the Blogarithm Contest #1 winners.   Expect them ... tomorrow, maybe? I may be out Christmas shopping all day tomorrow, but I'll see if I can make it happen anyway.

The Problems of The Last Jedi

*peers around corner nervously*   Hi, y'all. It's been a hot minute. Life's been bananas, but the semester is drawing to a conclusion and though I have much left on my plate to finish before January, I fulfilled my obligations and saw The Last Jedi.   Going into it, I was somewhat nervous for where the series was headed. I really enjoyed The Force Awakens, though perhaps my enthusiasm was amplified by the fact that I was seeing a Star Wars film on the big screen when I thought for years that

The Problem With Hogwarts Houses

Late last night, I was up thinking (uh oh), and the most random question popped into my head: what Hogwarts house would Ron Swanson be in?   The answer became very complex very quickly, because Ron Swanson—like all of the Parks and Recreation characters—is more interesting than a some actual people, which makes a simple classification tricky.   But Hogwarts houses shouldn't just be a simple classification, which is what they've boiled down to. They're flanderized and there's not much that Rowlin

I doubt that many people on BZPower know that much about the '80s. Plus it's a really narrow category.   I would elaborate but I'm tired.

The Poll Predicament

For many times, I've seen topics shut down in favor of the almighty poll. Being a premier member myself, when I find an unpolled topic, I poll it.   But there's still something about the poll system that bothers me, and I don't really see a way to fix it.   Occasionally, I see a topic that's closed in favor of a poll, but people are actually discussing in the topic. Rare, I know - especially in today's GD - but it does happen. I'm always a little sad when they get closed.   The main argument

The Past Few Weeks

My grandmother has been in and out of the ER for the past few weeks. She only lives about an hour away so at least one of us has been visiting and spending nights to help her recover from a series of problems exacerbated by incompetent physician’s assistants. She’s getting better, but slowly.   The high school baseball season is ending soon. We had a fun awards night featuring a video where I spoke in the voice of Morgan Freeman featuring little kids going after a foul ball. We finished 20-3, an

The Only Ten I See

-----Though many bags were packed and many items checked off many lists at the close of Tuesday, the final steps towards getting out the door still lingered as all items of importance were verified in triplicate. All said, our journey began a little before noon, and we took the road north to Wytheville, Virginia.   -----But we had, since 2013, made a vow to ourselves not to go through the treacherous mountain roads of West Virginia unless absolutely necessary. It was in Wytheville that we turned

The New Word Filter

I sincerely congratulate -Windrider- and the rest of the gang for knocking out something that was long overdue. (Come to think of it, Takuma is probably much happier than I am.)   Over the years, I've heard many people discuss changing the word filter. Heck, I knew people were kicking around that idea when I joined nearly eight years ago; Taka-Tahu-Nuva mentioned to me that discussions were going on back when I sent him updates to the BBCC History topic. It was full of what were, objectively, bi
