Since My Dad Doesn't Go On Bzp

... it's safe to post this here.   I just got a random email deal from Barns n Nobles... a 25% off coupon for one item in the store. Mostly a gimmick to get my to buy stuff there and/or become a member and pay the membership fee... but I though I'd use it.   So I went and bought the Star Trek DVD, 2009, Special Edition. Not wimpy regular edition... special edition, which at 25% off is only a couple dollars more than the regular edition at 25% off. See, my dad's a huge Trekkie fan and loved

Simple Thing, Really

If you play with fire, you're gonna get burned.   It's cliched, but true.   This is after learning of the event covered by this article   I did not witness it myself, but when I tried to pass through Red Square an hour later, it was all blocked off and I had to take the long way round to my classes.   Just a reminder of what a crazy world it is.   Xccj

I guess I should approve all my comments now, if just to be a good example.   This makes blogs a little less fun.

Short Story Or Epic

Okay, I'm working on a story that was originally supposed to be a short, one post story. However, it's been expanded to 9 pages on MS Word, and I'm still not finished yet. There are some places that it can be broken up, so perhaps it would be better as a, say, four post epic.   What do you think? Loooong short story or short, four chapter epic? And if I post it, will anybody read it?

Short Story Contest Arrives...

I've never been the greatest SS writer, but I'm going to enter this contest no matter what. Well, I'll try and put quality work in, but you get the point.   It's a song-fict contest. See the official topic for all the details and rules. I have this great idea for a song and I even think I know which character I'll use. Coincidently, I also used him in my Epicfest entry. Anybody remember Duka?   And, no, this has nothing to do with the other Time Disruption project I'm working on. That's

Short Story Contest #4

Short Story Contest #4 has begun!   I am soooo physced!   First off, one thing I just noticed. The Takua in TOM's drawing isn't accurate to the set... he had blue feet, remember? Oh well, I like this version better.   I already have a great idea cooking up. It's looking to be a great action story with some character developement. I'm thinking it'll include a group of about six Matoran... including Takua, of course. I'll probably pull some of my favorite Matoran characters from my other e

Shopping Score

I've been hitting up the local Fred Meyers (a big retail store in the western states) because I got a $25 gift card for Christmas, and Fred Meyers always has LEGO Bricks.   Sometimes.   Anyway, none of the stores are very close to the school, so I've been experimenting with the bus system, taking new routes into new places (AKA, not University District. I've lived here for more than two years and I still don't know the Seattle area that well outside the campus) And so far, I've been hitting

Shooting At Mines

So I got this new WWII Pilot game, which should be fun. FLying, shooting at enemy fighters, manouvering around to get the best shot. The top game sites said it was a dud because it was "too easy." I beg to differ... plenty hard for me. I'm currently stuck on the first level (unless you count the tutorial as a level, then this would be the second one) and I'm stuck on a mission to blow up mines in the water for ships. And I can't seem to get it. There are like a dozen of these small mines i

Shoot 'em Up!

Really, no good news. I'm doing this mostly for the sake of posting a new picture. It was the first day of winter classes, and I was bored, sleepy, and sick. Sick enough that I'm probably good enough to get out of taking a test... not that I'll have an option like that. Unfortunatly, my earliest class is also my smallest, so they take roll call. Bah.   Set wise, I have been looking at the Makutas and their respective Matoran. Mutron and Vican (that's the combination, correct? I'm pulling

SHIPtember 2014 WIP: Radioactive Pitchfork

I guess at this point, it's less of a WIP and more of a "I'm pretty much finished with it but I might tweak a few things before the final photo shoot."   And black light.   Radioactive Pitchfork - WIP Black Light by Xccj, on Flickr   Comments welcome. Like I said, I might still tweak a few things, like antenna placement and such.   On a somewhat related note, did you know using black light will get you disqualified in BBC Contests? Guess just part of the rules I never considered until now.   W

SHIP It, SHIP It Good

SHIP it up, you know you should. So SHIP it!   This is my third year "competing" in SHIPtember, where you build a SHIP (Seriously Huge Investment in Parts Spaceship) which has to be over 100 studs long. So I made not one, not two, but THREE of them. (Sure, they barely reach the limit, are generally narrow, and won't win any competition... but hey they're complete, as far as I'm concerned, so that's a plus.)     The Jade Spear: Basically an attempt to build a ship around the Ninjago spinner. It'

Shine On

Please don't cry, You know I'm leaving here tonight, Before I go, I want you to know, There will always be a light. If the moon had to run away, And all the stars didn't wanna play, Don't waste the sun on a rainy day, The wind will soon blow it all away. (Yeah) So many times I'd planned To be much more than who I am, And If I let you down, I will follow you around, Until you understand. Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Excelent movie. It may not have perfectly followed the books (too actiony, if you get my meaning) but it combined enough good old fashion detective work with some interesting 1800s England action, as well as plenty of references to the books, and intriguing mysteries as well. A thoroughly enjoyable movie. A fun thing to do on the evening of Christmas Day and all...

Shanghai Chase = Fred Meyers Fail

Fred Meyers has rarely let me down price wise. They don't get the newer sets until months after their release, but they tend to have a ton of good sales. So there currently was a 20% off deal, and I decided I wanted the Indiana Jones Shanghai Chase set. They had it in stock, but something was wrong.   It was priced $49.99.   Lego.com's price is $29.99.   But it was on sale, so it was really $39.99.     I checked with a cashier. That was the correct price for the set.   Okay, so Fred M

Sets Galor (and Updates)

I am extremely giddy for reasons I can't explain. Because I don't want to spoil any surprises for future entries...   Anyway, I went to the bookstore today. I got my dad a book for Christmas; a sci-fi book. He's very particular about them; they have to be hard sci fi (no fantasy nonsense) and not written by women (for some reason. I guess it comes from experience that females don't write the best sci fi). And it shouldn't be part of a series... in general.   I found an awesome book that m

Set Reviews: Black Panther Royal Talon Fighter and Rhino Face-Off

The Black Panther movie was pretty epic, and there were two Lego sets to go with the film (in addition to a jet released with Civil War). So today I’m taking a quick look at 76100: Royal Talon Fighter Attack ($29.99, 358 pieces) and 76099: Rhino Face-Off by the Mine ($19.99, 229 pieces). There will be some moderate spoilers, but I won’t go too in depth to the movie.     Between the two sets, you get seven figs from the movie, hitting most of the main cast. T’Challa appears in both sets in two d

Set Review: S.O.G. Headquarters

Ninjago occasionally releases a set that’s basically an arena for the latest spinners. Usually it’s a couple of walls built to contain the spinners with a few functions and themed sculptures thrown in. Some of the designs are better than others, but mostly their appeal is in playability or unique minifigures. Well, in the case of 70640 S.O.G. Headquarters, I totally got it for the figs, although 530 pieces for $40 did convince me to get the full set and not just Bricklink Lloyd’s exclusive fig.

Set Review: 76115 Spider Mech vs Venom

Another quick set review, picts from Instagram! More Images on Instagram This set is $49.99 with 604 pieces. I'd been eyeing this Spider-Man set for a while now, but it was a little too spendy and I had my eye on other sets.  Besides, I've already got Spider-Man and Venom, and Spider Gwen wasn't super detailed, so I tempted my expectations.  But then I got it as a birthday present, so it all worked out in the end! The figs are okay.  Spider-Man and Venom are great; super

Set Review: 75937 Triceratops Rampage

I think my new way to do set reviews will be via Instagram.  Sure, I'm limited to square photos only, but it's the easiest at the moment.  There's not exactly a ton of room for text, but I can elaborate here if I really want to! More pictures and videos on Instagram This set is $59.99 and has 447. I totally got this set for the Triceratops.  The coloring of the dino is new, but I believe the mold was reused from the 2012 Dino theme.  And we've had three or four waves of dino

Set Review: 75529 Elite Praetorian Guard

Man, I've been putting this one off for months waiting until just before the movie premier to post this! (Truth time, there are older set reviews that I'm still working on. Sigh.)   I'm waiting to see how many angry Youtube comments I'm going to get on this one. I hummed the theme music, added snarky captions, and generally felt meh on the set, so it's bound to set off a few folks. (Tis good to know I set the bar pretty low as the worst BZPower reviewer.)   Anyway, for the TL/DR (which probably

Server So Slow

Man, it seems whenever I try to log onto BZP these last few days, the server won't let me do anything, or if it does, it takes a reeeeeeeeeeeeeally long time. :annoyed2:   Anyway, I have a job now, and I work pretty much all afternoon (and into the evening). So any major projects that I was working on (or really planning to work on, with the exception of some BrickFair stuffs) are on hold.   If you see me online, it'll either be in the early morning hours or around Midnight. (For me)

Seriously...

First off, I will state that I totally understand that staff have lives outside of BZPower and that I myself can hardly be expected to keep to a strict schedule in posting things...   But still...   It's been over a week since the BBC contest topic shut down, and still no polls. And I entered like the second week. I think my BBC topic is already dead and gone (kind of was within a few days of it being posted) So when will voting begin?   Mostly because I want to see how poorly I do in th
