Rpg Etiquette Episode 2

In my previous RPG Etiquette Episode (more than a year ago now), I adopted a rather cynical and sarcastic tone. This Episode will depart from that a bit by taking a more neutral opinion on matters.     ---Part 1---    Godmodding. We RPers all know what it is. It's a rule in almost all RPGs, and those that don't have it usually tend to fall apart. Why is that?  For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, Godmodding essentially stands for "godly modification", where a player makes his

Reflections On The Autumn Olympics

My only complaint about the Short Stories Contests was always that there weren't enough of them. =P I loved writing, I loved reviewing others' writing, but I often had trouble working up the motivation to do either. Part of that may also have been because the Short Stories forum always felt so lonely, as opposed to a couple of the other forums I was a regular to. The contests not only provided me with an incentive to do the former, but also gave me much-needed reassurances that there really was

Putting Yourself In Someone Else's Shoes

I was just thinking about the phrase "before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes". The idea of it is supposed to be that you don't have the right to judge or criticize someone until you've been through what they've been through.   This entry isn't entirely related to that, but it does have to do with the "in their shoes" part of the phrase. About a week ago, another forum I visit had a topic to honor the memory of another member's late friend. The friend had "mixed with the wrong

Personal Messages, Personal Memories

As a premier member, I have room in my inbox for 1000 messages. But the PMs I've been getting over the years I've been here are stacking up, and already past halfway. I panicked, and went on a sort of cleaning spree, reading through some of the PMs and deleting ones from the same thread.   I did this at first to clear space for future PMs, but soon found myself happily reading the PMs I sent to friends and vice versa. It awoke so many good memories...Hak discussing his Hunters of the Dark comi

On Objectivity

People will never agree. Especially not on standards. People will argue about the verdict in a courtroom, the flaws of the SAT in providing a standard for college admissions, even the 'accuracy' of a history textbook that is too left-leaning or right-leaning. When these standards are taken to a national scale, these disagreements become huge as well. And ugly.   There is no correct way, no one Truth; at least, even if there is, there are few people who can figure it out in their lifetime. It's

Nostalgia And Reminiscence

So, after sending someone a PM, the content of that message prompted me to try to figure out how to get to a list of my previous topics...   It took a while, but first I stumbled onto the subscriptions page, containing the only topic I ever actually subscribed to -- the Covenant of the 13. It's an epic by Wolf Eyes (sadly no longer active), and it's a great read. I'm still rereading it, so I have no idea if she ever actually finished, but anyway.   So, I finally wound up in my topics list. It

Nobody Appreciates Me

CartoonNetwork's old show Justice League is one of the best, if not the best, animated series in the history of animated series. Its sequel JLU isn't far behind. Give a shout out if Justice League was a fond childhood memory for you too.

Naruto Rpg Profiles: Part 6

My apologies for my irresponsibility. TEAM 8 Brief team history: Team 8 is noted for completing its missions quickly and efficiently, and for its members. The sensei of Team 8 is arguably one of the most beautiful women in Konoha, and Shawn is known for his fearsome taijutsu and loud mouth. However, Team 8, like many other squads in Konoha, has seen its fair share of tragedy: Mizuno, one of the original members of the team, was brutally killed during their first A-rank mission (Noromatu Neozaka has since become a member of the tea

Team 10 has accomplished a surprisingly large number of high-level missions for a Genin team, and has largely met with success in completing them.   SENSEI:   Name: Hatake Zakiyu Member: All mods Age: 20 Rank: Jounin Vil

Naruto Rpg Profiles: Part 1

Since my first post in the RPG is already too big, I have no room for the profiles for characters. Keeping them in a Word Document and showing them to the members when necessary has worked well so far, but I think putting the profiles in an easily accessible page would be easier, so in the next few days I'll be putting profiles by team in my blog, starting with Team 7 and their substitute teammate.   TEAM 7:   Brief history of team: The team got along very well, the three Genin of the team b

My Trip To Japan

This is a journal depicting my trip to Japan. The entries span several days, from two days before the trip, to one week after. Keep in mind the dates listed are the dates that the entries are written, not necessarily the dates the events happened.   JANUARY 29  There are two days until I leave for Japan. I’m nervous, a bit scared, and half of me doesn’t want to go. My parents scoff when I tell this to them, though; according to them, this is an honor. That’s what I thought, too, when I firs

My Technological Growth

I've just changed my avatar to a 64x64 drawing that I edited myself, on Microsoft Paint. A year and a half ago I had been asking friends to make avatars or sigs for me, often to go with the fads at the time (Marvel fad, I is a Fish fad, etc.). Now, though, I can fully operate such complicated (so it seemed back then) computer applications to create or edit drawings of my own.   Even though this is just a small accomplishment, I can't help but be proud of myself for finally getting one of sever

My New Life

Not so much a new life, really...well, maybe it is. I guess it just hasn't hit me yet, since I haven't been away from home for more than a month at a time for summer camps. Speaking of which, it really did feel like a summer camp last week during orientation. Carnegie Mellon really spoiled us with cruises and bowling and lasertag...someone said they must be tricking us, making us want to stay for the year and suffer through their super-tough classes.   Not that I'm complaining of course, if I'm

My Grandfather

It was bound to happen. My grandfather’s health was deteriorating already, mostly due to his constant smoking during most of his life.   Still, it came as a shock when my mom stumbled up the stairs, crying and saying that she had just received a phone call from the hospital/senior center my grandfather was at. His heart had failed during the night.   I didn’t really know my grandfather. He lived in Taiwan the later part of his life; my parents had immigrated to the US, so much of my extended

Music Under A Gray Sky

This is a poem I wrote three days ago. Our marching band was warming up for our halftime show for the high school football game, our first 'performance' in uniform, and I noticed how the sky was completely covered by clouds, which was the inspiration for the poem. Please read and enjoy!   Music Under a Gray Sky   We stand Warming up There is no blue To watch us Only drab gray clouds that Throw the vibrant color of Our uniform Into greyscale Our scales Echo around the quad A pause

You've all heard of the term "___ wins the internetz". I'm usually against using such cliches because overusing these memes tends to downplay the awesomeness of real accomplishments. However, in this case I believe our resident Compulsive Name Changer, Rabid (or My name is a sentence. now) has indeed won the internetz. Looking Back On Four Years Of Bzp

And so it's been four whole years at BZPower. -------------- 1 ------------ ...........I could say that it feels almost like yesterday, but I'd be lying. I don't really remember my first days as a BZPower member that well. The couple of months before and after are clearer, but I have next to no memory from my first day as a member, exactly four years ago now. ...........I'd seen the BZPower website before, in the winter of '03 – but its vast wealth of possibilities did
