Sub W I P Part 2
I got some more parts orders in. They weren't big; they mostly contained a bunch of 2x8 yellow bricks, which I really needed. I have one more big parts order coming in, but even though I ordered it at the same time as the two that just came in, it has yet to ship out yet. Oh well. And the last order contains some crucial parts to add to certain sections. But until then, I can start building more of the sub.
For the record, there are some stand-in pieces in here. Basically, anything that isn't yellow, black, trans dark blue, or trans neon orange is just a stand in until I get the same piece in the right color.
This time, I gathered up a minifig crew for the sub. I have about 5 aquanaut torsos, and matching legs. To mix things up, I changed the color of the arms for each crewman/woman. Right now, I've got red, green, purple, pink, and orange arms on the characters. Sadly, I only have 3 white suits, so two of the crew have to stay inside the sub. Although in this picture, 4 of them are inside, so they don't really need their suits on.
I am so far impressed with my component design. Each section of the sub fits together nicely, and my connection points are strong enough to hold it together. I know this because for a couple of sections, I'm missing the pieces to really connect it, and thus it is very loose. Sadface, but that will be fixed.
Also, you can't tell how incomplete this sub is because you're only seeing one side of it. The other side is where all the missing sections are, which includes a couple of windows and propellers and such.
There is one part of the design that I am disappointed with. The tail fins are only held in by three studs, and this makes them far more likely to fall off. I would normally try to reinforce it, but that would mess with the windscreen. So I can't really think of a good way to fix it. On the other hand, it looks good, so when it's on display I think I'll just leave it that way and hope nobody touches the tail.
The Hero factory arms are another thing I'm trying out, since I wasn't able to add them into my digital design. Overall, I like the joints with Evo's yellow armor. I need to tweak the far ends of the arms to match the rest, but I do like how the claw turned out. They'll require some work, but I think the idea is good.
Also, I've kind of given up on the idea of a mech and just made a small sub fit under the dome, similiar to the one used in this set. Actually, it's nearly identical, except I changed the colors to yellow.
I can probably go on and on about this, but I'll zip it now. Hopefully I'll be able to post a completed version soon.
