New Sorting System

Previously, I had my Bionicle pieces sorted into various bins based on color. Some of the bins were easy to sort, like red or white. Others were so numerous that I had to place them in multiple bins, like black and grey. And some I didn't have enough in one color to fill a whole bin, so I combined them, like with yellow and orange and the various shades of green.

I dunno, I probably blogged about it at some point. It's been this way for over a year now.

Since I have the week off for the holiday, I decided to spend the time resorting my pieces, going by type instead. I have them separated by socket pieces (including the new Hero Factory limb pieces), limb elements, body elements, foot pieces, colored armor and weapons, silver weapons (man I have way too many of those), masks and helmets, projectile weapons, large technic pieces, small technic pieces, and Hero Factory armor. Whew.

I originally heard from some people that this is a much better way to sort stuff. That way you don't have to sift through everything that's the same color looking for a specific piece. But so far, I'm not too impressed by this. I guess I had my colored assortments spread out enough that it didn't really hinder me. Plus, it could be that I sorted Bionicle parts, and other people were talking about bricks in general.

However, my next step is to start sorting bricks. I went from 20 containers full of Bionicle elements to 11. So now I have room to try and sort my system collection. I've already got my minifig parts and accessories sorted out nicely, but now I can start sorting out bricks, plates, slopes, ext. So there's more stuff to do in the future.

However, I started this around 5 this afternoon, and it's currently past midnight. I don't know how time snuck up on my like that, but I have a feeling the rest of this project won't get completed until Winter break. So until then... I HAVE BLOGGED ABOUT SORTING.

(Oh, and I did a little bit of building too... made the Toa Mata in the new HF style. I am... not entirely impressed. Maybe pictures later, since some turned out nicely and others didn't. Also, there are my plans to build a MOC for all 36 original Kanohi, which should be done by Bricks Cascades, since I can't haul over that many MOCs to BFair.)

I've had my collection sorted both ways. I like the by-type method because I don't have to sort through endless seas of black to find the little piece I was looking for, but on the other hand, you can't just dump out a can of one color and get easy inspiration.

I'm also a big fan of sorting by element versus by color. It's simpler for a limited space sorting solution.

However, if I had the space, I'd go Bunda's way. Part and color in a seperate location is the best sorting method possible.

I'm a fan of both, but most of my pieces are sorted by color because my collection is small enough that it's easier. But super-special pieces are in their own container to be easy to find.

Someday I'll fully sort my LEGO bricks by piece type though.

Bionicle, however, I feel is better sorted by color. Because when color-coordination is key, it's easier to pull out a few containers of some pieces, them all being the same color, then to have to sift through various containers for joints, limbs, armor (and Technic pieces).
