Hypnotism
AP Psychology is probably my favorite class, AP Language coming in at a close second. For example, today we had a professional hypnotherapist come to the class to demonstrate how hypnotism works - specifically, explaining the particular state of altered consciousness and also explaining the limitations it has. After the explanation, which followed a true/false quiz the class took in order to assess our own knowledge of it (I did my reading, so I got all those questions correct~), he did some minor demonstrations on the class as a whole and then on two individuals.
On one individual, he got him to forget the number six -- even had him count his fingers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 plus 1). After the fact, the student couldn't recall precisely what happened (as is possible in some cases, although in most cases subjects are described as having knowledge of what transpired -- according to this hypnotherapist) and the second subject was able to smell a jug of pure ammonia without gagging on it, due to the hypnotist suggesting that it smells sweet and that it was only a few drops of ammonia in water. After this, when she was fully awake, he presented the ammonia again and she recoiled with an involuntary gag. (As did all the students he presented the ammonia to).
It was an interesting demonstration, to say the least.
