Nathan8472's Banner Shop: Chapter 1, Page 2: Thoughts

Kakaru

Link to the topic and the comic being discussed.

The expression on Kakaru's face in panels 3-4 was way funnier in the rough draft. Unfortunately there was no way to transfer it from two dots and a line to a complete face without losing some of the humour. I was tempted to leave it the way it was but that would have looked awful in context.

The expression on Velox's face in panel 5, on the other hand, came across perfectly. His stance and the dialogue help get across the "are you kidding me why would you do that" look I was going for.

Kakaru's hands are hidden by speech bubbles in p6. This was unintentional. I actually had them drawn and they looked better than I planned. The speech bubbles weren't hiding them and it kept in form with the rest of his body language. Then the dialogue was too big. I wanted to punch something.

Speaking of the text, all of it was drawn on a separate page. I traced the bubbles so the text stayed within the allowed margins. This way, I reasoned, I wouldn't have to draw lines to keep the words straight and then edit them out later like I did with page 1.

Ironically, I forgot to clean up the speech bubbles so it ended up being twice as much work for the same results.

The excuses bandied between Kakaru and Velox in p10 changed at each stage of the editing process until I was forced to decide on one set of dialogue that would portray the rivalry between the two and their unwillingness to work together (as well as Nathan's power over both of them.)

I forgot the fingernail in p11. You can actually see the mark where it was supposed to be, but I forgot to draw it back in when I was retracing everything.

I love the look on both their faces in the last panel. That worked well, so very well.

Also, notice that the subtitle on the sign above the door changes each time it's shown: In the concept art, on page 1, and now here. I don't know what it means, nor do I know what the first half of that sentence reads.
