I'm A Philosopher, Not A Mechanic!

:kaukau: I hate it when in movies or stories or whatever someone ignores ethics and says "it's not my job". That's really stupid. The way I see it, if you're human, you live life as a human.

Anyways, this leads to another thought I was having. That is, if I ask philosophical questions, I expect that it would only be appropriate for someone to answer those questions as a philosopher. And no, you don't have to be a philosopher by profession to be a philosopher. Plato didn't think he was any wiser than anyone else. So really, anyone can take up the mantle at any time, and therefore anyone can talk about philosophy from the appropriate perspective of a philosopher. This is opposed to talking about philosophy as, say a mechanic. You're applying the wrong profession to the wrong field. I can see how someone can bring in their insights from their professions into the equation to make a clearer analogy, though.

You have a good point.

Isn't philosophy at it's very roots, just logic and reason? I'm sure we're all capable of doing that.

I'm not sure I understand where you're coming from. How would someone go about philosophizing "as a mechanic?" If philosophy, which Wikipedia defines as "the study of general and fundamental problems," is merely logical thought and rational argument, how does one philosophize a 'wrong' way? Regardless of your chosen profession, any study of general and fundamental problems supported by logic and rational argument is philosophy.

thebeggerpie: I believe it could be defined as the searching for truth. it has, obviously great grounds in logic, and in fact many key philosophic principles are laws of logic. The principle of non-contradiction for instance.

I believe it's a play on one of Nuparu's lines in one of the Bohrok Online Animations. But I may be wrong.

I'd imagine it's based on Xaeraz's response to Kraggh's previous blog entry.

A ) It was a joke about engineering, ethics, and efficiency. One of us didn't communicate right, clearly.

B ) Sometimes it's interesting to look at things through a different lens, yeah? If I only looked at things like a philosopher, then I would see beauty in a dead vulture, and then I would wonder if the vulture was still a person when it died. If I looked at it like a member of PETA, I'd want to stab a dozen people for letting a bird they had nothing to do with die.

C ) If you have an issue with something I wrote, could you please at least tell me instead of vagueblogging?

However everyone has different viewpoints and ethics, this is called Moral relativism.

:kaukau: @Xaerez: I didn't have an issue with Xaerez. I guess I appeared to be confrontational, but those were actually just my general thoughts at the time. Looking back, I realize that I didn't come up with a coherent entry that didn't connect its thoughts underneath a unifying theme. I was going to just reply to you, but I was about to get separated from technology for a while and didn't have enough time, so I just decided to jot down some thoughts.
