BTW in case anyone was wondering the right answer is that Purple Rain is the better album artistically and overall, but 1999 is the more danceable album and has arguably the strongest single track between the two ("Little Red Corvette").

Sign O' the Times is also exceptional, and I'm rather partial to The Black Album, too.
