Android help needed

Okay, so I need some help. I turned on my phone today, and the screen and it's just black. It still responds to voice commands, screen presses, etc., and the screen and keys are backlit. Tried shutting it down, taking the battery out and putting it back in, nothing that I can very well access without the screen working is bringing it back. After looking around online, it sounds like a hard reset will do the trick. The idea of losing everything on my phone isn't a fun one though, especially since I have some apps I downloaded when they were free that I'd have to buy now.

So, two questions;

1. Is there a solution other than resetting my phone?

2. If not, is there any way to copy the data for the apps to my computer and just put it all back on once my phone's working again? I can save my photos and music, but I can't find the apps when I browse it in disc mode.

It's an ancient A855 that's still chugging along and still runs on Froyo, so that might be worth note.

I can't remember if they had this on 2.3, but I know 4.1, the version I'm currently running on my tablet, your apps are synced with your Google account. When you reset it, you can connect to the Google Play store and it'll automatically redownload your apps. I'm not sure how that'll work with the free-but-now-paid apps you have, but I think it'd still say you own them and redownload them.

When I had my Droid 2 all of the apps were synced to my Google account. I was able to download them all when I changed phones so they should be synced to your account. I think you can check on the web version of the Play store.

It turns out I on't have to risk it either way - shut it down again, took the SD card out, booted it up without the SD card, and it worked. Put the card back in, and everything's fine. :D
