The woe of a conductor

A probie member of my choir made this joke after rehearsal:

A famous orchestra conductor was going to give his final performance before he retired, and he chose Beethoven's 9th Symphony as the piece he wanted to go out on.

But he couldn't count on the basses in the choir, because they all went out in the hours before the concert and got plastered

But there was no helping it

The concert went ahead as scheduled

And for most of the performance the basses did fine

It was okay

It was good enough for the event

But near the end of the piece they just started missing notes right and left.

Infuriated, the conductor slammed a fist down on his stand.

It toppled and the music sheets went flying

Suddenly, the conductor realized his worst nightmare had come true

It was the bottom of the ninth, no score, and the basses were loaded.

That is all.

I heard a variation on this joke where the double bass members of the orchestra tied the conductor's score together, making the punchline "the score is tied and the bassists were loaded."

Still a classic, though.
