How not to design a bus payment system
So, my bus card is out of funds, meaning I have one more ride until I have to reload it. This shouldn't be a monumentally frustrating task, but due to the title of the entry you're probably guessing that it is.
You are correct.
Okay, so to start with, there's are three options for reloading a card. One is logging into an account that the card is attached to, the second one is attaching it to an account, and the third is via the number on the card. (I'm assuming the theory behind the last one is that the worst someone can do is add money onto random cards and I can't see them getting complaints about that.) So after making an account and attempting to attach a card to it, it informs me that I can't do that as the card was attached to an account on creation. So logically I tried the third option because I don't remember making an account and therefore have no idea on how to access it. But upon attempting that it gives me an error that is not explained, but I'm guessing I can't do that because it's attached to an account. So I have to wonder what that option is doing there if you are given an account with every card. So my next step is trying to guess my username to see if maybe, just maybe, I can get the right one to retrieve my password. So I do believe I've done that so obviously this problem is solved.
NOPE.
Because as luck would have it you also need a security question to get a reset email and my account doesn't have one. So I'm left with a cryptic red lettered statement that instructs me to contact "The Administrator" to reset the password. And I still have no idea what that means. Presumably I need to call the bus systems phone number but that's the last thing I want to do right now. And no other account outside of my credit union has required a phone call to reset my password.
This is insane.
