Oh, Bleach...

Yes, I’m still reading Bleach.

Yes, it’s still not that good.

There are a few developments I want to semi-rant on briefly:

1. This “Kamikake” thing that’s been keeping Ukitake alive. What the heck? I may have just missed it, but I don’t recall seeing any foreshadowing that there was a deity comparable to the Soul King inside Ukitake’s body. The only thing that could count was a few chapters ago when we saw the shadow behind Ukitake, but I really don’t think that’s enough if it’s this important and has been there the whole time. Not to mention that it is conveniently the only thing King Quincy can’t predict with his wizard eyes. Deus ex machina, yes? Er, rather, deus ex Captain Ukitake…

Also with Ukitake dead this means we’re not going to get to see his bankai. This irritates me.

2. Aizen is free. Now, this I’m more optimistic about. While it could very certainly go absolutely wrong, and it’s sort of annoying that we’re going to have to deal with Aizen again, keeping him relevant does seem like a smart choice given that he was behind everything up until these last two arcs. He was The Villain of Bleach, and now he might get to take back that role. Kyoraku seems to hope he might help them fight King Quincy, and he might, but I don’t think he’s going to just be a good guy, so Ichigo’s probably going to have to deal with him again if he’s still around after they beat King Quincy. It’s also possible that Aizen might end up taking the Soul King’s place, which sounds like it would be really bad, but he’d probably just end up going to sleep and not having any influence, rendering him neutralized. Because that’s the exciting sort of development I’ve come to expect from Bleach.

But since his zanpakuto is gone we’re still not going to see his bankai, so that sucks.

3. While this certainly isn’t new, there are so many characters just hanging around in the background. Ganju joined Ichigo’s party, but what has he (or will he) accomplished? How many Stern Ritter are still alive, and what are they supposed to do now? We saw the dead Fullbringers were in Soul Society like, a year ago, but nothing’s come of that yet. And where the heck is Uryu? If he’s going to inherit King Quincy’s wizard eyes then he should probably be front and center right about now.

Ah, whatever, it doesn’t really matter…

4. Can we just get on with the fight already? I do want to see other things happen, and I do want other questions to be answered, but surely they can do that while they’re fighting King Quincy, right? Also I’m pretty sure the Captains could have made it to the palace in this chapter if not for the sudden “oh no it’s not working oh hey Kurotsuchi now that you’re on-screen give us this thing to solve this problem as quickly as it arose” thing.

So much stalling. But, I mean, if you get paid per chapter I’d probably do the exact same thing.

Anyway. I’m hoping it’ll pick up a bit soon and end on a higher note, but I’m not sure how realistic that is. Was Bleach always like this? Because I was thinking back and I realized it might not be that Bleach has gone downhill as I’ve sort of outgrown it, which is equally worrying in a way. :P Eh, whatever. Deep, calming breaths…

The explanation given was that he was born with the sickness, and the spirit was put into his body to keep him alive, so I don't think that's it.  I guess his periods of recovery are supposed to be taken as signs of the spirit's work, but I don't recall there ever being any indication that it was anything more than the disease coming and going.

Hmm; well, that would be a point.

I think a lot of the fact is that sometimes people think of things after the fact; so stuff from the Soul Society arc could have foreshadowed it, if it hadn't been for the fact that it was thought up later, maybe?

Planning only goes so far, after all. ^^'

Man I ain't even reading it but I'm still bummed that

Rose and Kensei got randomly killed by some random mook.

Like.

What was even the point. Why. Did Kubo just have to let off some random-death steam after not killing anyone for the first bazillion chapters? At least the other deaths served some kind of purpose. These guys were just like "lol I killed them." It just baffles me.

I'm not so sure Aizen's free yet... His mouth was the only thing released by Kyoraku. That's all it might have taken to activate his Shikai and presuming Kyoraku saw it before, he would now be under its spell and just think Aizen is free and walking around.

But he probably legitimately is. *facepalm*

The rest I totally agree with. And the part farmstink brought up, because that was just pointless.

I believe Kubo did admit to making things up as he goes along--which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but when it's something like pulling out a new deity it becomes a little more glaring. :P  Though I think you do have to make it up as you go along to some extent with any long-running thing.

Part of me is expecting someone (probably Kurotsuchi, unfortunately) to find a way to rework the zombie thing to make them actually alive again, so I haven't gotten too bummed about many of the deaths.  If they are dead, though, then yeah, that's a pretty unceremonious way of doing it. (Also it's bugging me that we don't know what's happened to Yachiru, especially now that we've finally seen her shikai and it was pretty awesome.  ALSO, I'm ticked that Unohana got killed off, especially since freaking Byakuya gets off scott-free once again, but I'd need a while to properly sort all those thoughts...)

Hm, I hadn't considered that.  When Aizen's zanpakuto went away I thought he might've lost those powers, but it's possible he still has them through the Hogyoku rather than the sword.  Or, maybe the Hogyoku is generating a similar effect?  That is possible.  I saw someone propose the possibility that King Quincy freed Aizen when he went to speak with him two years ago or whenever, which is possible considering how broken that guy is, but...even for Aizen, I think waiting in his dark hole that long is a bit much.  He's not Makuta, after all. :P
