A Musing

What if Star Wars eclipses BIONICLE as the 'main' CCBS theme?

I mean, the licensing fees and the extra CCBS sets have gotta cut into BIONICLE's budget somewhat, haven't they? I can't really see BIONICLE lasting later than 2018 if Star Wars CCBS sells well, since it'll take priority. And from what I've seen, in the past few days alone Star Wars CCBS has sold very well in its first five days.

I don't expect it to, for two main reasons. Firstly, there's the simple matter of Lego having more freedom with Bionicle. They can introduce six new heroes and villains every year without any problem, whereas while Star Wars may have a large number of characters, the number of characters who would actually be marketable (that is to say, mass audiences would even recognize them) is much lower. Secondly, there's the fact that the licensing fees are not part of Bionicle's budget in the first place. They'd be part of the Star Wars budget, and the lack of licensing fees will remain a significant advantage for Bionicle, for the same reason as it was during the original theme's run.

Keep in mind that Lego's not exactly being blindsided by the popularity of these Star Wars figures. They were basically the proven recipe for success, they've clearly been in the works for some time, and even so, Lego launched the new Bionicle with full knowledge that Star Wars figures were on the way. That in and of itself suggests that Lego is confident in Bionicle's potential.
