Rant About Similies...

Today... well tonight at least, I am going to rant about something: Use of Graphic(image based) Emoticons.

Yes graphic emoticons, not text ones Like : (, O_o , >.<, etc.. And I'll admit it, I'll use ones of the text variety at times, though not the image-based ones.

Why? For the most part I find that they stick out, and just don't look good. Seriously. Although in some cases you can't really find a way to write a text emoticon for anything and everything, which in such cases is a reasonable excuse, I bloody hate it when someone posts something like "OMG KUTGW 98136587613578/10 lol." then posts a myriad of random imbecilic smilies, which probably take more time to post than giving a halfway decent review. And really, don't any of you you think it's a tad... how can I put this... dull to punctuate something with an image, instead of writing your sentances to convey the intended emotions? Seriously, you can get the same affect in a less cheesy manner by punctuating, capitalizing, etc. your sentences.

And I don't mean to be saying using Emoticon Images makes you any less intelligent, or that the things are ALL bad, but It's just plain annoying when people decide to use them without even taking the time to properly write their sentances. Did I mention my distaste of incorporating smilies into posts en masse?

And I'll admit, I might be biasing a little; I'm more used to the parts of "The Internets" where image-based smilies are either unavailable, considered synonymous with "noobs", or simply not used often in favor text based ones. I'll also admit, I consider posting text based smilies in large quantities gibberish and flummery as well, but not of the same magnitude.

Still, I find such Image-smilies unnatractive, and I'm too used to them being used in posts that are basically just "OMG ROFL LOL I LIEK THAT PICTURE OF THE CAT WITH THE LAZERVISION" then have waaay to many of them type of Emoticons after it.

And as I stated earlier, I don't have too much of a problem with Graphic-emoticons in general, or the people who use them, just how they're so... unfitting.

To summarize everything, I don't really have to much of a problem with a smiley here and there(Though it's quite unlikely I'll use any), just when there's one or more after every single sentence.

Just my opinion, though.

My main problem with graphic emoticons is that BZP changes quite a few Textibots into Graphicons.

Which then results in epic war as the Graphicons try to take over the topic.

I've actually made a point of avoiding the use of graphic emoticons when I occaisionally post. I especially find it very inappropriate at times when people use the :P smiley in a vain attempt to alleviate the scolding tone of what they type. And I notice it's usually reference dudes.

I like to use emotions to reinforce the "feeling" of my sentense. So if I write something like "That jokes of your made me fall overt laughing." then I'd also add the  emotion. And there are various other emotions I like to put at the end of my sarcastic or witty paragraphs, just to leave the reader on a slightly visual note. :sly:

But I do understand where you're coming from ehrn I see a whole line of emotions piled up at the end of a short post... and it's even worst when it's those Toa transforming smiley, because the movement totally distracts me from the writing of the post. I probably consider myself more lenient towards emotions than you, but I do see your point.

Two other things:

1) Yes, I did purposely overuse emotions in this post. So sue me. (or edit the post, I suppose) :P

2) My sign off is also a smiely. Ha!

Annoying I know, but there's always the "disable emoticons" button.

If or when that button gets removed then the Graphic Emoticons will take over...

Same here. As I indirectly stated earlier, writing something in a silly, unserious manner typically pretty much rules out the need for any emoticons.

NO YOU.

NOPOSTYIMAGESMILIES.

NO.

See, the use of poor-grammar/punctuation/silliness is one, in my opinion, far better way to show emotion than emoticons, in this case slightly sarcastic silliness.

Why? :???: I mean, LOL, this is sooo obvious that these smileys stick out like a noob in a serious talk, but hey, I got no problem with it. :P Plus, it is against the rules to post with soooo many smileys. :) So if you see a post in a review topic that goes "ROFL, I WUB DA CAT DAT HAZ LAZERVISION! :P :P :P :P :P :P" then just report it. But you can just edit my post here. :P

So... Your idea is valid. :D

I can hardly resist my urge to vandalize that post in a silly, unserious manner...
