Concessions

No, not that kind.

If you guys don't mind yet another blog entry about the Nuva Phantoka, I have a few more thoughts on them, mainly born from the fact that I much prefer liking something to disliking it. With the Nuva as with the Mahri, there are things in them that I think could work wonderfully for Nuva in new armor. However, other things that are in the sets as well make me thoroughly dislike the actual sets for who they are.

It's exactly like the Mahri, actually. I see something of potential for a result I would like, even though the actual result is far from my ideal, and so I tend to think of a set using that potential instead of the real set. (And for points of technicality to please Bones and the Rachira twins, everything in this entry is from my perspective, not objectively.)

With Lewa, dark grey over lime could work swell; it gives a nice impression of full body armor. To keep him recognizable as Lewa Nuva, however, he would need at least two other things: a mask recognizable as the Miru Nuva rather than the Faxon, and Nuva armor. He would be wonderful with a Miru Nuva restyled to post-'04-style, like Lhikan's Hau. Then the silver Nuva armor removes any potential lingering doubts – not just a silver Inika chestplate and shoulder armor, but real Nuva armor tweaked and slightly enlarged to fit the post-2006 Toa build. I am quite fond of Matoro's claws over his shoulder, though... The absolute ideal would be to keep his air katana, with an attachment for them on his back as wings, but he wouldn't suffer from a new tool if the rest were as above.

With Kopaka, his color scheme already is okay for Kopaka Nuva – approximately the same distribution as the original, with a silver, roughly triangular chestplate. It's the eyepiece on the wrong side and lack of signature tools that bring him down, I find – if his mask just had the eyepiece on the right, he'd be recognizable already (eyepiece on the left = Toa Nuju), but the ideal would be to keep both sword and shield. I've already said Bionicle-ized angel wings would be best for him, but I'd forgive the airplane wings (which I will never like) if he had all the rest. Oh, and that includes Nuva armor the same as Lewa would have.

Since even dark grey in this distribution is fine for Kopaka, being at least a shade of grey; it's the mask and tools that cause problems. I'd definitely see Kopaka in the set if he just had the eyepiece on the right, though I wouldn't be happy about only having the bayonet. Sword and shield forever!

Pohatu... I'm not even going to talk about, because the only potential I see in his set regarding his character are his propeller-claws; virtually everything else would have to be changed for him.

So, aside from him, there you have it. The basic Phantoka designs aren't what I would use if given free rein, but they have potential to work to my tastes, methinks. Just need some tweaking and some Nuva armor. ^_^

I do hope to Mata Nui Kopaka has blue eyes, though. Lewa and Pohatu kept their eye colors, at least; I just hope Kopaka does too...

With all due respect to your opinions, I find Pohatu to be the best of them. I don't compare them to their past forms, because, well, that's what people did with Vista, and people were pretty sad, no? I learned not to compare old forms to new forms.

(If you find any sense in this, tell me, 'cause I don't. :P)

Let the record show I will be revamping the Nuva once I get them until they fit as close as humanly possible to my similar-standards as yours.

My insights:

Lewa: I totaly agree, 100%.

Kopaka: I Agree completely about the mask and wings, but I WILL get rid of that bayonet once I get him, or at least put it on his back as a secodnary weapon. He WILL get a sword and shield from me, as Kopaka should have. Agelic wings would be perfect. Unfortunetally, all we have now is Hhali's fin-like wings, and they look too fin-like to be considered angelic.

Pohatu: Actually, I think his entire stature is fine, and the build really isn't that bad for Pohatu. It's the mask and colorscheme that ruins it. Pohatu doesn't wear a Vahi.

I agree with your statements, however I'd like to ask you a question: aside from the fact these are (supposed to be) the Toa Nuva, what do you think of the sets themselves?

Personally, I think they're pretty good. Lewa has a great mask and a neat katana. However, the use of Rahkshi legs as lower legs doesn't work with the Nuparu/Matoro/Hewkii chestplate.

Kopaka is pretty good. Besides the lightsaber blade that sticks out too much from the telescope eye, there aren't many problems in the set itself.

Pohatu has a mask that is missing an half and has the Kongu Mahri design I hate, however he has those awesome claws/propellers that save him. I can't wait to get my claws on those things.

However, this doesn't stop me from making my own Nuva redesigns. So far, Gali and Lewa are complete, Kopaka is missing a decent mask; while Onua, Pohatu and Tahu are planned. I plan to make Takanuva too, but I still don't have anything planned for him. They are going to use basic canister designs and they are going to feature new masks and weapons that work as redesigns of their former tools.

Another question if you don't mind: what are your thoughts on the Phantoka Makuta?

Meanwhile, here's something for you:

You probably already know my opinions on them. I find it peculiar that the way I think so often tends to side me with opinions opposite those of people whom I so look up to. Hence why I am always so enthusiastic to debate about the sets; by doing so I am better able to understand why I think the way I do.

I personally have only a few minor qualms concerning the new sets, but they're more things that I would have liked better than things that would have been good or necessary. For instance, I wish they had Mata feet in their new primary colors, but as it is the fans would not like it (still trying to recover from all the complaints that "Matoro Mahri can't stand up" (read: "I'm too lazy to put any effort into posing Matoro Mahri"). I also wish their visors had been a different color (perhaps that Trans. Black they've been using in Exo-Force so much), and that Lewa's chest armor was silver and his feet lime. I wish that Kopaka's mask was flipped (though I'm glad to see that it doesn't look too much like its predecessor), and that Lewa's new tool had a non-serrated edge, if only to maintain stylistic consistency with his armor and mask. Yet I am content with these sets for the most part, if only as characters rather than as sets.
