How much time do Lego's designers spend on each individual canister set? 2 months? Three?

If they spent say, 10 months creating a single awesome set design, and then simply made different masks/weapons for each of the six, I'd buy 'em.

If well-designed, clonism would not matter, as 6 clone sets simply means the same parts in six different colors.

Oy, what is it with you and insulting Lego's set designers? They put a lot of time and effort into these things. And when you say that the sets' are poorly designed, they are only in your opinion. The Phantoka are selling like hotcakes. Obviously, the designers are doing their job well.

And when you say awesome, that means what you consider awesome. Because in terms of looks and such, "awesome" is personal taste and opinion, and there is no wrong or right. For all you know, the set that you call "awesome" could never do well at all in sales. And coupled with the target audiences' dislike of clone sets, that could very well mean that year would have terrible sales.

True about the parts, but that's what you, a MoCer understands and wants. The kids who are the target audience don't want that. They want unique sets. And what the majority wants, the majority is gonna get. That's the way business works.

Read.

So the Marketing team is doing well. They are why they sell. You can't really tell about the set until it's opened, and you open it after you buy it.

Wait...didn't you just post another entry forty minutes ago? O_o

Err, anyway, I can see the point about the canisters... kinda. The thing is; the more they spend on boxes, the less they can spend on the resources used for making the components for the sets. And really, I wouldn't mind it if they would just make spiffy cardboard boxes instead, like if they were origami-ish geometric shapes, or something , since I've got more canisters than I can shake a stick at as is.

And yeah, clone sets are neat for MoCing, but the thing is, people have been complaining for so long about how the sets are clones, and have little individuality. So you can see why they switched from clones to less identical designs. That, and more unique sets probably sell better, anyway.

Just my opinion.

I have read it already. And I wasn't saying that it 's wrong to have an opinion, I was saying it's wrong to pretend an opinion based on tastes is fact. Please don't put words into my mouth.

But once the kids have one set, and see what it's like already, why buy more, unless they like the actual product. If they didn't like the actual products, then they wouldn't buy any more after the first. Marketing only accounts for the "entry" sales. Once you've got something that you like, and you know there are more products in the same line, and that the one you've got is good quality, you're going to be inclined to get more. If you don't like the actual product, you're not going to buy more, and quite likely tell your friends and relatives not to buy them, because they're horrible, in your personal opinion.

I miss clone sets..... Things like the Piraka and the Toa Inika. Of course, when you have clones of the same sets two years in a row, it get bland. The way they did the Mahri was cool, but the Toa Phantoka are getting boring. The same thing for three straight years? I don't think so. I think 2001 and 2004 were the best years for canister sets. They just had a certain feel that the current sets don't have. Maybe it was depth....

Clone sets are good if you want to buy just one. Maybe a couple more, for MoCing's sakes. As for different ones, it's aways best to by all of them at once. ;)

Biggest problem with non-clones is that, for example, say I want Vamprah's wing pieces in green. Nope, they don't exist. If they were clones, said part would exist, and that would be good.

Lego is about building, not some silly storytelling thing, even if it is cool.
