Alex Rider, perhaps? It's a spy/action series, which I put loosely as a "mystery" series, as there's still a good deal of mystery in them.

And the Underland Chronicles series. Fantasy. Kid falls from New York City into an underground land full of people with swords, and giant intelligent animals.

Try some Stephen King books.

The Hobbit (if you haven't read it already), or The Lord of the Rings trilogy. They're amazing and I love The Hobbit... moreso than LotR. Or you could always read Bionicle books (unless you've read them all).

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. And some of his short stories. They'll knock your Kanohi off!

It won't keep him entertained for long, took me a day.

At the moment I'm reading Garth Nix's Old Kingdom trilogy (fantasy, anotehr trilogy going to be written soon) and I would also recommend Saga of Seven Suns (sci-fi) by Kevin J Anderson, B6 reads it to.

Try Dragon Rider's of Pern by Anne McCaffrey. That's a trilogy that fits the first two categories, and even a little bit of the third one.
