A Question On Gali And Other Stuffs

Not in that order.

First, I'm a senior now? Apparently. Graduation was Wednesday, so since there is now officially nobody above my grade, that makes us seniors. But bah, I'm going to miss the class of '08... at least a bunch of us intend to do a bunch of things throughout the summer...

Going backwards once more, Monday was the last day of school. Shortened classes in the morning to get back our exams, then some presentations, commencement rehearsal for the seniors, lunch, and then the awards ceremony in the afternoon. I was extraordinarily surprised and wanted to go hide somewhere in awkwardness afterward. I ended up with the Latin Prize again (I got it last year, too), and then got this one called the Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass Award, which is in the realm of Humanities and Social Sciences... Katie and Sam were trying to convince me I would get it, and it made me very awkward; interestingly, Sam got it last year, and Katie and I had been trying to convince him it was him. Plus the National Latin Exam and National Greek Exam recognitions, and Henry and I were inducted into the Cum Laude society.

Sandy walked past us after she got this one big award and said "this is very awkard..." and I wanted to go join her. >>

But on with the tale! Tuesday (and Wednesday) was spent coloring Onua, and Tuesday evening I spent at Seabreeze with Brook, Leigh Ann, Youri, and a few others as part of an end-of-year party. They made me go on roller coasters. I enjoyed having gone on them more than the actual going, I think... but still, we had much fun and got fluffy snakes from the arcade. I will treasure mine forever.

Then Thursday and Friday there was this college workshop thing for upcoming seniors at my school, so I spent most of the day at that. There were useful things here and there, but on the whole I thought it was very useless given how we had heard pretty much everything already elsewhere. I did get a pink feather boa out of it, at least.

And all of that is really there to list the reasons why I still haven't posted that MOC – I've been too busy with other things to take pictures, and then today it was too cloudy and dark. Tomorrow!

Now, the Question. I'll be do a finalized Gali or Lewa next in Project Nuva, now that I've come up with a pose for Gali and finished Lewa's Miru Phantoka, but an idea occured to me. Do you think Gali would be better with an upper arm assembly like in the prototype shot I posted, or with an entirely new armor piece? The new shoulder armor would be based loosely on this (rotate the open area to be downward), and attach like Inika shoulder armor. And it would be silver, obviously.

I was thinking that the Nuva 2008, even my own versions, are remarkably poor in actual new body molds – most of their new pieces are masks, tools, the new Nuva armor, and means of flight; only Pohatu's forearms are actually a body piece. And since the Mistika can't even count the Nuva armor as a new mold, new shoulder armor for Gali, or possibly Tahu, would help in the respect of new molds. But it's also not strictly necessary, either.

What say you?

I'm going to miss the classes of 07 and moreso 06. *sigh*

I know how you feel.

I like Gali's arms how you drew them in the prototype drawing. (IMO, Toa limbs shouldn't be 8 studs long. Well, maybe a Hordika leg if done right.)

What do you mean the "new Nuva armor?" Are you referring to your own drawings and new Nuva armor?

Good luck with drawing and pix.

(Length isn't the question... though I do like Inika legs as forearms, they're way too bulky for Gali anyway. But that's still not the question.)

Both? Since my own drawings have the redesigned Nuva armor (chest and shoulders) in them...

I like the second option better; the prototype one looks a little awkward and bulky with both Inika thigh pads and Nuva shoulder pads.

It's not about where the new parts are, it's about how many there are. A non-clone series should have between 21 and 24 new pieces. The Makuta Phantoka already have 11 new parts, allowing you 10 to 13 new parts for the Toa Nuva Phantoka. These include three masks and three tools, as well as the new torso armor piece and the acknowledged new arm piece for Pohatu. You have the potential to make two to five new molds besides those acknowledged.

If you make a new shoulder piece, by all means make certain that its style matches that of the torso you design. If any set should have stylistic consistency with the torso or shoulder armor it already has, try to include as much stylistic consistency in the new molds, if not in the same places.

The Makuta Mistika have eight parts laid out for certain-- the masks, the Nynrah Blaster, the ammo, and the tools (let's call Krika's front legs a tool, shall we?). Add Bitil's wings (which, being part of what defines Bitil, are probably keepers), Gorast's wings (again, keepers), and Gorast and Bitil's shared foot piece, and we have again that magic number of 11. As before, this allows 10-13 more new molds. But wait! Krika's torso and Krika's rear legs, the latter of which I deem important but you might feel otherwise about, are also new molds for the Makuta which you may want to keep. So for safety I'll calculate from an allowance of 10-11 more new molds.

Of these 10-11, three need to be masks and three need to be tools, bringing us to four or five available parts for means of propulsion. If you do as I would hope and give each Toa a different piece for their propulsion means as was done on the Mistika that leaves one or two new pieces to use as you please, but obviously based on your Gali and Onua designs this is not a plan you share. So use these four or five parts as you wish-- obviously the small wings and jets would be two of these, leaving a three-piece leeway.

Didn't realize until this post you had designed Onua, so let me give him a review. It'll be a bit harsh, so be warned.

I think I agree that the armor by itself would be better on Tahu, and I like what I have for Gali now, but here's what's causing me trouble. As my designs currently stand, Tahu already has a whole bunch of new pieces: four boosters, fins, and leg spikes, plus the Nynrah assembly and his Hau and fireswords. Gali has much fewer than that, with only two boosters, fins, the Nynrah assembly, and her Kaukau and the blades of her staff. Also, Tahu has a distinctly new feature to his construction, the boosters on his body, while Gali lacks any such innovation.

Thus, I feel like Tahu has plenty of new stuff going on, but Gali has so little that new shoulder armor would benefit her greatly. (Mind you, I would buy the Gali I designed in an instant as-is, but to stand alongside the rest of the Mistika I feel like she needs something more.)

Now, Aanchir and his long post: Yeah, I had been including the total-new-molds-per-group factor already, which was part of what made me want to give Gali new shoulder armor to begin with. The Phantoka are set in stone already – 23 total new molds, split 11/12 between Makuta and Toa*. So they're not important here. The Mistika have, as I've designed the Toa, 22, split 10/9 between Makuta and Toa* with the three for the Nynrah Ghost blaster.

So I realized a few days ago that Gali would be using fewer new molds than her official set had, the way I had designed her, and that the presense of new shoulder armor did look pretty swell on her real set. That combined with all the other factors I've listed elsewhere, as well as that empty slot for a mold, made me want to make a new piece for her.

* (Since you're interested, the Toa Phantoka's are 3 masks, Lewa's sword, Kopaka's blade and wings, Pohatu's arms and claws, the skyblaster, the Nuva chest armor, and the left and right Nuva shoulder armor. They're mirrors of each other; I'll put up a picture some day... And the Mistika are 3 masks, 3 tools, the boosters, the fins, and Gali's shoulder armor.)

Your friends have too many names. You should assign them numbers instead! Easier to keep track of that way.

"Hey Friend #43, me and Friend #6 are going to meet up with Friend #12 and Acquaintance #9 at the movies. You want to come? We're seeing Indy #4!"

I liked your Gali the way it was just fine, personally.

Hey Fred. I saw that prototype picture a while ago, I had no idea it was yours. The Nuva armour/Inika armour is a nice idea IMO.

No, the smooth, sloping shape of Inika thigh armor looks fine on Gali. I think the regal-look of Metru thigh and shoulder armor fits Tahu, but the thigh armor is too thin, as shown on the actual set, and the shoulder armor has that round thing on top that would restrict leg/arm movement badly. So I would give the new armor to Tahu, base its style on the Metru armor but make it the size of Inika thigh armor, and use it on Tahu's thighs and upper arms.
