Off To Cmu

Tomorrow I leave for Pittsburgh for a summer program at Carnegie Mellon. Six weeks of college-level courses. What fun.

In the meantime I'm worried cuz my schedule is @*&^!!ed up. Darned budget cuts...

So there's only one session of AP Latin V, only one session of AP Computer Science A, two sessions of AP Physics C but each one is two periods (APs Physics C, Chem, and Bio are all both-day classes) and only two sessions of SAMCLA (AP-weighted high level course, but no AP exam) but they're during the same period on either day (we've got an alternating A-day B-day schedule).

So basically, at first we have it so my Physics is in conflict with SAMCLA. Now my counselor can't move my SAMCLA since Physics is the same period both days, it's a two-day course, and that blocks both SAMCLA classes. But if she moves it to the other session, that conflicts with the only AP Computer Science A course.

So my first choice was to drop SAMCLA for AP Stat, since both are math courses, and basically Calc BC and Stat are the only higher math courses beyond what I've taken. Now, you gotta get that some classes I have more than an academic interest in taking. I was ready to drop SAMCLA because it was almost purely for transcript padding purposes, because Scientific Applications of Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra looks VERY impressive. But in AP Comp Sci I'll be with all the same crazy guys from Programming I this year, and I know I'll have a blast with them all. Plus it'd be weird to have a lone Programming I in junior year and no continuation on that... even though -technically- it was a second-choice elective, colleges don't have to know that. :P I enjoyed it, too, so anyway...

So I drop SAMCLA. And guess what?

The only open AP Stat class is the same period as AP Latin.

I'd laugh if this wasn't something that could seriously affect my future, or at least my last high school year, dramatically.

In a last ditch effort, because Calculus BC is the last thing I want to take (the first half of the year will be stuff we already learned in Calc AB) I ask what would happen if I took BC. BC is the same block as Computer Science.

I want to bash my keyboard into the school board's face for not passing the stupid budget.

So where I stand now...

I've e-mailed my Latin teacher asking, if I have to drop Latin (since four years of math in the end outweighs four years of language), whether or not I could take an independent study in my free period that I'd get from dropping Latin, and still study for the AP exam. After I get a response, which hopefully would be yes, that becomes my backup and I go to my counselor with this plan:

First choice: add me to a full AP Stat class. I'm only one person, and people are going to drop out at the beginning of the year; there's not a huge difference between 30 and 31 kids in a class. Then I can take AP Latin and AP Comp Sci, the ones I really REALLY want to take since I love those classes and I've known my Latin teacher since freshman year, plus Physics C, which gives me a solid 4 years of science.

Second choice: drop Latin, take Stat, take Latin independent study (hopefully).

*sigh* things are so messed up... ><

Well, I'll try to distract myself in Pittsburgh. I'll have internet access, but not for tomorrow and perhaps most of Saturday. Not like I'm active enough for that to really matter, though...

Anyway, yeh that's it.

I visited CMU and their physics program looks very impressive.

What classes are you taking there?

Oh, and dern your school for offering AP Physics C. I have to content myself with working towards the AP exam independently next year. Forget Stat; you'll bore yourself to death.

Well, the thing is of course Stat is the only good alternative. Yeah, I heard it's easy... but there's nothing else to take.
