It's weird how you can be researching something that you already know is completely bizarre, and then when you find out something really bewildering about it you're still really bewildered despite the fact that you already knew it was completely bizarre.

Like goblin sharks. 25% of their body weight is their liver, and nobody knows why? That's no explanation! Why?! Why is 25% of their body weight their liver?!

Because perhaps their diet was confined to eating TONS of necrotic meat, full of yummy, yummy toxins... but they went out into "cleaner" killing fields?

 

This sounds like one of the mysteries that egghead scientists spend careers on, but the common man will just be like, "Um... Duh?" with a simple explanation.

If the species as a whole moved out to cleaner killing fields, wouldn't the liver have atrophied pretty greatly by now? Even a year of disuse on a human's leg can lead to significant atrophy. Generations of no use at all would have left it a lot less than 25%, wouldn't it?
