Blue Screen Of Death

Necro

Currently typing this from my Ubuntu partition. I just got my first ever BSOD in XP. Ever. On any XP computer that was clean of viruses, spyware and the lot, or met and passed the system requirements. Something about the update a few days ago has killed XP, my favourite shelter until I get the MacBook. This has never happened to me before in XP, and I assumed it never would as it hasn't for years. Worst of all, it happened while running normal tasks(iTunes, Firefox and TunderBird).

Needless to say, I'm ticked. DEATH TO MICROSOFT, WINDOWS, AND DOS, AND LONG-LIVE UNIX, PRETTY COMPUTERS WITH FRUIT ON THEM AND BLACK TURTLENECK SWEATERS!

I get BSODs pretty much every other month, but that's Vista for you.

Anyways, I'm seriously thinking of dual-booting Ubuntu on Stephen....

Do it. OS X > Ubuntu > recently updated XP > Vista for my needs, and, as your also switching likely yours as well.

I've never seen one ever.

Luck of the gods.

Never seen one; like, evar.

Although I have had my System32 file become corrupted. On a laptop with XP. For no apparant reason.

And testing a Mac at Best Buy last night ALMOST made me want a mac...if it weren't for the fact that the WHOLE MOUSE is a button. I was constantly clicking EVERYTHING.

I think you got that a bit backwards Necro, Linux (any version) > Mac OSX (though you're better off just buying the products for XP for about the same price) > Windows XP > Vista (even though I've never had an honest problem with Vista)

XD Well, the lowest-price MacBook right now is still one of the old white ones with a separate button and trackpad, you could get one of those. =3

Fair enough. I just prefer the feel of OS X though, and right after a computer's first BSOD(or OS' first one for you for that matter), I kind of put the GUI before the quality of the OS itself. Still though, Ubuntu doesn't work with power management, a couple of my peripherals(which I bought when I was saving for a Mac last, so their all Mac-compatible) and, again, the feel of it, so I'll probably still end up getting a MacBook. You are right I did get them backwards though.

Really? I've had my laptop with Vista Home Premium (64 bit) since earlier spring and I haven't seen one blue screen. Not to mention that I haven't had a blue screen on my desktop with XP back home. I used to get blue screens on the desktop we had before that, but that was hardware (faulty motherboard) rather than software.

Linux and Macs are overrated. They have their issues and crash as well.

Is my current desktop set up. Yes it's Windows ;D.

GUI should be the last thing you look at, performance should be the first :)

My GUI can spin. Can yours? :P

And I know, but Ubuntu's barebonedness makes it run faster and cooler, and the cube thing is just darn cool. :D

Different needs. For yours it's fine, for mine XP was fine up until now while Vista was god-awful. ;)

And I'm going to have to give a hearty "NO U" on this one; Ubuntu has crashed only once for me this month while Windows has done so eight at last tally, and OS X has never crashed in-store for me, but based on the reports I've read of them crashing I'll ballpark an estimate at four.

1. If I really wanted to, I could probably make my gui spin :P

2. Good thing you're not like most Mac fanboys and only go on the 'macs dont crash' argument :)

1. Fair enough, but three out of five cases a lawyer will come up with an elaborate way that beaks the EULA and sue you. :P

2. XD Aye, I may prefer a Mac, but I realize that, like all computers, they have a bunch of flaws. Just less in what I need than Windows, or, in some ways, Ubuntu.

1. You forget; their lawyers. It's their job to think of outside-the-box ways to make you be breaking the law. And when someone with 50+ Billion like Gates is paying them to do so, they'll figure out a way fast, I'll guarantee you. Unless you do it under the radar like most do. In which case it's awesome and screenshots or it never happened.

What's a GUI? :???:

Graphical User Interface. The thing you click that is put up by the code that is what you see on the monitor instead of the code. :D

Link to comment

Sorry. :P It's basically what you see. It's the bulk, and is run by the code that is the core of an Operating System. It's like with a guitar stack; you see the cabs from the seats you bought, and assume that's the source of most of the magic, but it's really the head, or the code, though, as the listener the cab is the part you truly care about,

Link to comment

XD Nah. Well, sort of. I got some code, which, continuing with the guitar analogy, is like a pedal. Not needed, but you like it. Anyway, by putting it into the code for the GUI, or as the analogy goes, the line from the guitar to the amp, I can get an added feature, namely the cube, and whatever effect the analogy pedal is.

Oh, you meant Microsoft would sue me! I thought you were talking about Linux Lawyers (that's what made me wat)

In that case it's not against the terms of service as long as I do not modify the actual system, which I haven't done. Everything I've done is entirely possible to do without messing around in the muck and changing the basics.

Fair enough, I have actually never read one of those for something non-opensource in my life, so I was assuming there.

My Mac crashes. And I dual-boot XP under Boot Camp.

Never said it didn't. With the more recent updates to XP, it, as well as Vista, meet my needs less than OS X does.
