Film Review; Valkyrie
Well, seeing as it was released today and I figure reviews of it are scarcer than days I have money, I figure I'll give a brief review of the new movie Valkyrie, which I got back from seeing recently.
Valkyrie, which follows the story of a doomed German plot to assassinate Hitler, opens with: "Based on a True Story." That's often shorthand for "Warning: Balderdash Ahead," so it's worth noting that Valkyrie respects the historical record.
Anyway, the movie starts in Africa if I recall right. The group of German soldiers that Claus Von Stauffenberg(played by Tom Cruise) is attacked by I believe British planes, the end result being death and Mr. Stauffenberg/Cruise losing his right hand, two of his left fingers and his left eye. From here he is promoted and inducted by a couple others into "Secret Germany", the group that tries to kill Hitler.
That's the basis of the plot, and I won't spoil anymore for anyone who hasn't seen it.
I generally prefer comedies, so I didn't have high hopes for me liking this movie, but I did. It draws you in, entertains you, then ends with the credits. What a good film should do IMO. It did feel somewhat rushed though, which ruined some of it, but not all of it.
Mr. Cruise did a great job on the role I think, and while it could've been better, he certainly did the man justice.
So what can you expect from this? Well, it's historically accurate, which, looking at Braveheart, is a very good thing. It also gives an interesting view on the events. Gripping to the end for me, it was definitely worth my money, and if you want a good thriller, give Valkyrie a look.
Also, a moment of applause and saluting for Mr. David Bamber for being willing to take on the role of one of the most hated men in history. For taking that role, he's a better actor than I, though I'm not much of an actor, so that's not saying a lot.
