Lunch With Designers

Binkmeister

I had another lunch meeting with the BIONICLE design team today (or at least 5 members of the team), and as usual, we had a great time. I've been negligent - nay, delinquent - in updating the Designer questions and answers, but I hope to have the next set ready for BZP by the end of the weekend. I'm traveling on Friday so that'll take some time to get back to normal.

We answered another 20 questions today, on top of the 30 or so we'd gotten through before. It's turning into a regular thing, and the answering is just an excuse to have lunch and have a good time. I even managed to get a picture this time, which I'll include with the story next time.

There are a few answers that you'll love, and at least one set of answers you're not going to like. At all. So I'll put a teaser here.

Question: What happens to the prototype sets?

Answers:

• Kelly: I snag them.

• AS: We do throw them out after a couple of years, since we don’t have a museum or any space.

• MTJ: Nobody wants them.

• AS: And it’s a shame, since the prototypes are always the coolest ones.

• MTJ: We leave them on our doorsteps, but nobody wants to take them…

There are of course more answers to that question, but I felt like frustrating you guys today. Bwah ha ha.

P.S. The first one is kinda true; I do have a few prototypes... some of which I'll bring to BrickFest in Portland in March.

It'd be neat if they could, just for a brief moment, pop out those 2001 torsos in a few unreleased colors. : p

It's more realistic (and smart) to see a return to the ball sockets of old.

Speaking of balls... some of those through-axle types cast in glow in the dark plastic would be sick awesome.

I'm babbling.

I'll take 'em!

I've been giving input on some 2010 models (I actually am proud to say I'm making some significant contributions to that line), and I provided more input today on some of them. And since I'd just read your post, I suggested glow-in-the-dark for a specific piece. The designer really likes the idea, so we're going to test it (it's in a way that hasn't ever been done before). If it makes it through to final model design, you can look at that model (in a year) and say, "They did that because of me."

The element doesn't have anything to do with balls, though.

Set prototypes would make great BBC contest prizes. Put in a request for us please, Bink! :D

QFT.

Sounds cool! Glad to have some BZP inside intelligence working their minds for us!

I take it you find your job at Lego to be rather entertaining? ^^

But as that one guy said in the quote, I'd have to agree that quite a few of the prototypes- at least that I've seen pictures of, look kinda spiffy. Would you say that the sets are becoming more and more like previous prototypes over the years, or not really?

Say, that makes me think, why don't y'all start up some sort of "Lego Museum" somewhere, like in a LegoLand themepark? You said the reason the prototypes aren't kept and are eventually discarded is due to no practical or beneficial reason to store or place them; I can certainly see such an attraction getting visitors to come there all on its own. Of course, it wouldn't be all about prototypes.

If you are giving input on 2010 models, maybe tell them to make the tips on socket joints rubber so they don't break and provide better grip on larger sets?

Any word on weather teal will make a comeback like tan did this year? It's a lovely color and I'd like to see it in sets.

As is bright green...

And joints that hold studs in the circle part...

But we really shouldn't make this about trying to persuade you to persuade them...

Bright green is quite lovely too, but we seet that color on all kinds of system sets. Using it inspires me to try out new fusion MoC methods. But seriously, teal is rare. Last time we saw it was on the Tarakava and Kongu, I don't even know what system sets have had it recently. The prototype Dark Panther (Exo-Force) had teal as a working color, but it was released in purple, (which is also awesome, but not as well recieved as teal would've been).

Instead of throwing out prototypes, why doesn't the LEGO Company recycle them? They could take out the relatively common parts and return them to the warehouse, while the special "one-use" parts could be melted down. In my opinion, that would be a more eco-friendly way to go.

EDIT:

And joints that hold studs in the circle part...

Are you talking about this piece? If so, the old version has been seen a few times since its redesign in BIONICLE sets (specifically, in certain Agents, Castle, EXO-FORCE, and Power Miners sets).

How on earth to you manage to be in Portland with prototype sets just after I leave???

Anyway, great to hear the next chapter of the "Chronicle of the Set Designers" will be out soon!

...I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

As far as I understand, it's a chemical change that can't be reversed... like pouring a glass of orange juice into your glass of milk.

You COULD probably use some kooky scientific way of separating them again, maybe some enzyme or something, but good luck with that, it is what it is. : p

Anyway, in the grand scheme of things, you're really probably only talking about a few dozen "sets" at any given time. There's not much to really recycle.

You can't make an all-trans moc because they don't consider trans strong enough as balls (or axles, for that matter), so I considered glow in the dark as the next best thing. : p

But balls or not, that really is dang awesome to hear. :smeag:

We talked about torsos quite a bit.

What.

Now I'm definitely looking forward to hearing this next set of questions! This is something that I really want to know about.

It's just, torsos have bothered me a lot recently, and I've always wanted to know what the set designers themselves think of them...

My dream.

You're living it.

Anywho, that's awesome. Can't wait to hear the rest. =D

And I'll tell you, there's no way those prototypes are unwanted. There's probably not one person on this website who wouldn't take them in and give them a home. (Mine's smoke-free!) =P

Really? I keep missing out then. I made sure I got Chameleon Hunter, but didn't get a chance at the $5 train set. Aside from that, I can't recall anything with enough green in it to throw itself right out in front of me.

(And teal would be awesome too. But, just like how we just got TAN back, we need new/old/exciting colors for a few years as both limbs and joints (and technic pieces) so as to grow a collection for better MOCing purposes.)

No, no, not balls, joints. Toa hands, Rahkshi brains, this piece.

I, too, like that part about torsos. I'm also worried about that part you said you knew you would not be happy about, and would not be surprised if these two coincided.

Wow! Is there a brickshelf gallery or something that has pictures of the prototypes? I would love to see them! I've always loved seeing what the models looked like before they were finalized! And believe me I would take them if I could.

Here are pictures of something from last year.

There's a few things here if you look. And here is even better! (Including my favorite.)

And oh! I just found these prototype Kanohi! Haven't seen this for probably about 5 years! *saves*

Finally, these, with Toa Metru Keetongu, which would have been awesome piece-wise.
