Lego Does It Again

Spoony Bard

First let me me bring up this entry. Brickforge makes a system cow in early 2007, and Lego later makes one in late 2008.

Now on to what this entry is about.

This is a Tauntaun custom molded by Christo which is compatible with Lego. He made is in early summer of 2008. It is a perfect custom made for the Lego Star Wars fan, and like Brickforge, he has a good reputation.

This is a Tauntaun made by Lego for the 2009 Star Wars sets.

For those who say Mega Bloks copies Lego, shut your mouths and realize that Lego isn't perfect either.

Lego made a key animal character a piece in a set based on a scene from a movie license they owned...

I see nothing wrong this, they pay substantial money-bags for the license. And as much as repro and custom companies provide for fandoms (and I'm not just referencing Lego), some collectors will still want the legitimate thing.

ALSO, the primary consumer of Lego sets are children, who are even LESS likely to be able to get a custom molded piece off of the internet.

But Lego didn't make it first.

Well it is like Halo. Are you going to want the Brickforge/Brickarms customs? Or are you going to get the Mega Bloks version instead?

Primary yes, but they aren't the ones dishing out all the money. AFOLs pay way way more.

Don't forget that LEGO does focus group testing of sets (I don't know if this applies to every line, but I'm assuming it would to Star Wars) which take a while, as well as the actual time it takes to develop and produce the set. Who's to say they didn't think producing a set with a Tauntaun back in 08, and simply didn't get around to it until now?

And Christo had the designs back in late 2007. Whoever comes out with the product first is the winner.

Point of the entry was to point out that not everyone is perfect. People are always nitpicking how Mega Bloks copies this and that from Lego, even though no one is original.

So I am going to nitpick.

"There is nothing new under the sun."

I actually like a lot of Megabloks' ideas. I mean, I still like Lego (a lot) better, but beyond the basic stud size and shape (which is obviously copied, but no one's arguing that) Megabloks is pretty original.

That's nonsense.

LEGO did not go find this design for the sheer point of utilizing this guy's idea. That would be plagerism, and he could sue.

Lego can sue him for basing it off the Lego Star Wars game.

But they can't because they never made the Tauntaun.

It is like how Brickforge or Saber Scorpion could sue Mega Blocks for them making Halo.

Fact is, LEGO has the rights to produce this and this Christo fellow does too, only LEGO can sell it on a huge scale. So its fair game.

First of all, I'm not someone who thinks Mega Bloks is always copying Lego.

Secondly, you haven't convinced me. When you posted the cows, I thought 'if Lego is plagarising Brickforge, then Brickforge is plagarising Mother Nature'. And it's the same here - if Lego are plagarising Christo, then Christo is plagarising Star Wars.

But Lego didn't make it first.

You're right, Lucas Arts made it first. Then Kenner (and on into Hasbro when they bought out Kenner).

Its not like Lego looked right at that custom mold and used that as a base. There's only so many ways you can design the same animal in a couple pieces of plastic.

Primary yes, but they aren't the ones dishing out all the money. AFOLs pay way way more.

The same can be said for any adult collectors. If there's an item they want, custom or not, due to the fact they're ADULTS, they can usually set aside more money for their collection.

Now kids on the other hand, it can't be argued that there are more KIDS who play with Lego than AFOLs who collect Lego, its just common sense. Obviously Lego has identified the AFOL niche in their market, which is why we've gotten a lot of sets directed specifically at them. But when you walk into a Walmart or TRU practically all the sets you see on the range are marketed at children.

You guys took this way to seriously.

So that means we can all agree that Mega Bloks does not steal Lego's ideas, licenses, and themes?

Beyond the original brick and stud design, I agree that Megabloks does very little copying of Lego. I would say I've seen Lego copy Megabloks themes more often than the other way around. :P

Like Rabbitman said, all I see them "copying" is the original stud design, otherwise not really. I bought a lot of the Plasmatech stuff a couple years ago to boot.

There was Tauntaun in the Lego Star Wars II video game. The Tauntaun that was made by Christo is clearly based off the one in the game. So Christo "stole" the idea from TT, and then Lego then stole an already stolen idea? What!?

Only crazy Lego zealot's think that Megablocks is copying lego. Also it's just a Tauntaun you can only make it so many ways.

Heck, for all we know lego my have bought the mold from him.
