Probably depends on the surface as well. Dust on white stuff always looks darker than it does on black, for instance, IMO. But yeah, that density stuff Veef mentioned as well.

I say it's actually just the light each takes in. Wipe dust up with a black cloth, it's still white, just like when it was on whatever it was on.

Hm...that's kind of like saying, "Why is the sky blue?": The real explanation is so boring and un-romantic that it's more fun to wonder.^.^
