Star Trek

Be warned, there's a possibility of a few inferred spoilers, but nothing specific enough to hide it all in a tag. Proceed at own risk. :sly:

Well, I got to see an advanced screening at the University for free... and it was a spur of the moment thing too. I passed by the HUB and saw a line of people waiting, so I looked up what show they were watching and it was Star Trek. Considering I was planning on paying to see it this weekend, I took the chance and got in line. (Some minor stuff like home work can wait). I was at the veeeery end of the line (like it went all the way down the hall, up two levels of stairs, and all the way back down the hall on that level) I was actually one of the last people to get it before the theatre got filled up... so there were a few people behind me who missed out. But even so, hey, I was waiting for an hour and a half in line. Those others must've been there much longer!

And the crowd of people was weird. There were the typical university students attending, but there were alot of old guys... who're actually like Trekkie fans who probably grew up watching the first seasons. I had to sit next to this one guy like that. When the people running the thing tried to entertain us before the show with trivia questions, h was loudly complaining about how easy the questions were. And he was using harsh language when we had technical difficulties. It's like... seriously, take a chill pill. It's not like you whole life is leading up to watching this movie... (or is it? )

And yeah, we had technical difficulties. Halfway through the movie, the film broke, and they had to mend it together. There were a few false starts where it didn't work, but I think they must've just skipped the scene where the tear occurred and moved on to the rest of the movie. I was surprised... I didn't think they still used film in this digital age. I understand scratches on a DVD, but still. I was impressed that they actually managed to get the film going after about 20 minutes... of course, some others weren't so considerate, but the audience as a whole went along with it, massively cheering each false start.

The actual movie... I suppose it's good. I'm not a big Star Trek fan... I enjoy it, but I don't follow it religiously (like I do Bionicle). But my dad's a Trekkie, so I know a few things. I noticed alot of key characters (mostly by the applause the audience gave them when they first appeared) and often key phrases. I like the acting of the original cast, but this movie's actors did a much better job, probably mostly due to the cool technology of the day (and maybe the higher budget). Although Zach Q. didn't seem as good of a Spock, mostly because I've seen him as Sylar so much. I kept waiting for him to telekinetically cut Kirk's head opened... never happened. :( Really, the only similarities between the two characters was they both had mommy troubles... I swear he said it the same way as Spock and Sylar...

Anyway, good acting, good special effects, good plot. (I especially like how they explain that this plot is slightly different from the 1960s stuff) Definitely worth seeing, even if you're just mildly interested. But if you're not a full blown Trekkie... maybe wait a few days for the opening crowds to rush through. An audience full of Trekkies was very annoying. :glare:

I feel like wearing my Star Wars shirt when I see it, but it'll be a few weeks after so it won't really matter.

Yeah, we still use movie reels. Digital may be great and all, but I guess there's still something to a reel.

Cool how you got to see it so early, and for free?
