If LEGO was judging based on how well they could use the model for whatever secret purpose, then I can understand the results. If they were judging simply based on the quality of the MOC then there's no excuse.

Which is why it isn't bad, it's just "bad." We wanted the best of the best MOC chosen, and instead this one (which I think is a cool MOC, and it's big, so a lot of work was put into it) was chosen.
