Ideas For The Contest
I still haven't gotten around to writing an entry for the latest epic contest, but I think I know which one of my stories I'm going to pick to write about.
Originally, I was going to portray Vakama's point of view from Kulagi's Kanoka. After all, he was the semi-antagonistic character through most of it, arguing and complaining and such. Writing about him would help me justify some of his actions, which were kind of confusing in the end considering what his actual personality is like. But I realized the better chapters I could use all involved dialogue... and I can't think of a good way to rewrite a large chapter of dialogue without making it seem boring or repetitive. Still a fun idea, but not my best.
Instead, I think I'm going to use my last epic, Mystery on Keli-Nui, which was my entry in last summer's epic contest. (You know, it was the second longest epic entered, and made it to preliminaries thanks to the judges, but totally bombed in the polls because nobody bothered to actually read it {although the overall winner was bonesiii's story, which was twice as long as mine, so I guess everybody read his but were too tired to read mine...}) I'm still annoyed with how that worked out... I put alot of effort into that epic, and I think it is one of my better stories, and it hardly got any reviews. I got the message so clearly that I haven't updated any of my stories since. (Well, I did, twice, but the server crash erased all evidence)
Anyway, as a mystery thriller, I followed the journey of the protagonist, but there were plenty of background stories going on. I'll probably focus on the main antagonist, which will be a spoiler to those who haven't read the story, but will help explain what happened first hand that I only covered in skimpy explanations in the actual text.
I dunno how it'll fair in the contest, and I'm sure it won't attract any new readers (or reviewers) to the epic (nothing I've tried has... and I have probably a half dozen blog entries dedicated to marketing that story) But it should be fun to write, and besides, half my stories have never been read by another soul, so why should I care that this one hasn't either, even if it was posted online and actually read anonymously by some judges at some point?
