Greatsword > All

The greatsword, to me, is the greatest self-defense weapon at home.

Why?

Because if you jump into someone's house to burglarize with a gun, you're not expecting resistance. Much less from some who's overly-tall and/or strong. Especially if they're carrying a sword that's likely over a foot taller than you. Not only does this throw them off for a moment, which is a much bigger advantage than it seems, but it's freaking intimidating even if they do have a gun and you just have a sword. On top of all this, it's seven feet. If it doesn't throw them off and they're as tall as Shaquille O'Neal, if you can catch them for even a few seconds it's long enough that you can skewer them, which is completely legal if they're pointing a gun at you.

This is also why I feel that in England instead of nightsticks police should be given swords. The pommel can be used like one, and frankly a cop with a greatsword is going to stop any small-time criminal or chav in their tracks.

>implying that it's possible to wield a greatsword inside a house

That is of course, until you jam it into the ceiling.

Greatsword > roof too.

Zweihander is where it's at

If they were affordable and available I'd have to agree.

Is this because you heard about that student in Maryland who found a burglar in his home (the second time a burglar had been there in that week, possibly even the same guy), and when he was attacked by the discovered burglar defended himself with the sword he'd brought along precisely for this scenario. He cut off the guy's hand, then lacerated his chest. The burglar died, and no charges have been pressed against the student.

I think he had a katana not a greatsword though. That's probably why the burglar attacked, not intimidated enough :P

>implying that they wouldn't just shoot you when they see someone rushing at them with a sword

trust me, in close combat hand gun > sword

unless you could sneak up

but it's most likely night so you'd have a harder time going unnoticed

1. People are stupid, they can and will forget they are armed.

2. Faster "trigger" wins.

3. No need, if you're Rurouni Kenshin, at least.

4. Since when is it HARDER to sneak up at night?

Most of what you said is based on split second reactions

A person may forget they're armed for a seconded then freak out and empty a magazine into your chest, yeah but you have to pull the sword back some for a proper cut, never watch Kenshin but dosn't he fight people with swords? and it's quite at night so they would hear you better

Some people, but there are people like me who'd be too dumbfounded that someone would wield a sword in modern times who wouldn't, proper cut? Just trying to immobilize the dude, yeah Kenshin fights people with swords but he moves at supersonic speeds. And just because it's quiet don't mean it's harder to sneak up on someone, I mean, I guess maybe it is if you're a mouth breather.

It's been tested, it's pretty much a certainty that the gunman will have plenty of time to fire(and by fire I mean unload an entire pistol magazine into a moving target)(all the tests were with the gun holstered, if he's already got it out it's faster). Can't link to videos, of course, but they're not exactly hard to find.

But cags, that's not what the movies show us....
