1st Person Perspective Pet Peeves

Jean Valjean

:kaukau: After some time, I have come to a certain ways of viewing writing in first person. There are a couple of habits that I try the best to avoid.

First, the word "I" should start as few sentences as possible.

Second, I try to avoid using phrases like "I noticed", because they say the obvious. Let's look at the phrase "I noticed a girl looking at me." Well duh, that's obvious because if the character didn't notice, they wouldn't be writing about it. It would have been much more to the point and more like showing as opposed to telling if one wrote "A girl was looking at me." See, doesn't that phrase sound better? I suppose that it could work in some rare cases, but this is one of those "99% of the time" things.

Those things were in the back of my head, and I felt like putting it out there.

I agree with you. I don't normally write in the 1st person but reading something that was written the first person gets rather tiring if every other sentence starts with "I".

Now that I have an approval you get to be the first recipient.

But if you didn't feel like it, you wouldn't be putting it out here! :o

:kaukau:Lol. Oh no, I'm a hypocrite!

I thought about that, and decided to word it that way in case the reader otherwise would have had the impression that I was coming down with stone tablets and saying [pompous]"Thou shalt not"[/pompous]. Nobody likes that kind of attitude.
