Bionicle Reaches Its End

I’m sure you’re all aware that Bionicle will end next year and because the topic is a bit wild I’m also going to put my opinion here.

To be honest I didn't see Bionicle lasting any further than 2011. I was slowly drifting away from the story but I’m still a bit upset. Bionicle has been my hobby for nearly 9 years now but I can’t wait to see this new line and what it is about.

Those who are saying ‘let’s all kill Lego’ should relax, and anyway;

I don't see F1 ending anytime soon. :P

I find it funny how some people are reacting about this. I might as well put my two cents into it:

Lego is a buisness as well as a toy. I think you'd have to be living on Planet Zarth or something not to know how the economy is. Everybody, every buisness is at risk of losing vast amounts of cash, and in the ultimate doomsday scenario, going under. Lego has some very clever people in it (if it hadn't, they wouldn't be the incredible success and the global name they are today) and if for any reason, Bionicle was proving to be struggling, I have no hesitation to think that they would cut their losses and end it.

Of course, I'm not saying that this is the reason Bionicle is ending, but I think with many many millions of people out of work and some countries still struggling to get out of recession, it is inevitable that some children might not be buying as many sets. I have been an ambassador for bringing the price of these sets over the past few years, because, without wishing to sound snobbish, I kind of saw this scenario coming. Nothing can last forever. I don't think set quality has been as good recently as past years, but I'll come on to that in a second.

Now for the people who post here who are frankly making themselves really look silly, here is the honest truth: Sometime in the future, you would stop buying Bionicles. Again, it is inevitable. As much as I would like to think that you could remain for a child for the rest of your life, it won't happen, you grow up, you go through changes physically and mentally and you stop playing with toys as much. It is called growing up and we all go through it. You can deny it all you want, but I did too, when I was younger. I thought I'd never get bored of Bionicle when I was younger too. But I'm now 16 and, well...I've hardly been following the story line, I haven't bought a set for a good two years and I can't remember off the top of my head the names of any of the sets that have come out this year. When I was 10, I could name every single character like that. But I've grown up and moved on.

It gives you too a chance to move on and try new things. There's some people who are what? In their late teens, early 20's here and this could provide them the much needed oppertunity to try something new. For younger kids, well, it's just a toy, and who knows what is around the corner? Lego might be about to realease a new theme that you like just as much or even more as Bionicle. Or you might get away from Lego completely and find yourself in a new experience, you might find yourself having a great talent (and from here, I can say there are many great artists and writers that could really become successful later in life if you chase those dreams).

For me, I'm not too gutted. As I say, I've really distanced myself from Bionicle over these past few years and I have stronger interests in other areas and ambissions elsewhere. I'd have given my right arm to be a Lego designer when I was younger. But as ever, things change and I now have my eyes firmly fixed on travelling the world and becoming an F1 journalist. I really haven't liked the way Bionicle has been going over the apst few years. For me, the battle with the Piraka and the Toa Ignika/Nuva meant a lot of finality for me. That was the last storyline I really followed in-depth and I haven't looked back since then. For me, 2007 was the last year of Bionicle being truly great. Of course, there is bound to be people who'll disagree with me on this one and fair enough, but from the amount of posts you get at a start of a year of "awful sets" or "not buying any of these" I'd also say there is a fair few who DO agree with me.

With everything in life, I see an end as a new beginning. Who knows what is around the corner? Afterall, Lego still exists, and Bionicle will still exist as long as you still like it. Of course, you won't be able to buy any new sets, but what is to stop you MOCing or playing with your existing models still? Nothing. Be greatful for that, if nothing else. Of course, who's to say several eyars down the line Bionicle won't be back, like how Lego brought back the Pirates this year? I think that could be a likely outcome of this, and to me, anticipating what Lego will do next is to me a strange emotion. of course, I'm sad to see a theme go that I grew up with, but everything must end and I'm excited to see Lego's next move.

I think, unusually, you can draw ties between F1 and Bionicle in this moment. In F1, Honda, BMW and Toyota have recently withdrawn from the sport. Here, Lego is ending the Bionicle theme. But there is still a lot of existing teams in F1 like Ferrari, McLaren and Williams like there is still a lot of existing themes in Lego. Lastly, like how F1 will carry on to be the second most popular sport on the planet followed by 600 million despite these withdrawals, Lego will carry being a world-classed, world-known toy manufacturer.

Phew, my fingers ache now!!
