My interests? You mean you are actually interested in taking up time when you could be pursuing your interests to read about my interests? Interesting. I will have to make this interests list interesting for you to read.

Here goes.

Well first thing is that I’m really passionate about Formula One. For me it is a proper sport, and I can’t watch a football match without getting massively annoyed or falling asleep. But anyway, this is supposed to be an interests list.

I enjoy everything to do with Formula One. I love the political side, the technical side, the logistical side – everything. For me there’s nothing more that I enjoy than watching an F1 race at the weekend to see these incredibly talented people drive these awesome race cars around some amazing circuits. I actually find myself getting more excited over the prospect of an F1 race than I do with Christmas these days. I literally couldn’t sleep the night before Abu Dhabi, with all the title outcomes going through my head.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have been to two F1 races, both at Silverstone in 2009 and 2010. Neither are experiences I’ll ever forget, the speed of the cars, the incredible sound and also the extremely passionate and knowledgeable British fans now make me urge anyone who’s even slightly contemplating going to a race to go for it. It’s certainly something you need to do before you die. Sure the tickets are expensive, but you only live once.

My passion for F1 extends from just watching the races. I also really enjoy designing driver’s helmets and car liveries. I always get excited about seeing new driver’s helmets at the start of the year, or, if like Sebastian Vettel, every few races. I love the quirky features some of the drivers have on their designs, like Alonso’s playing cards or Hamilton’s caricature.

I like others forms of racing too though, especially like the British Touring Car Championship, MotoGP, Le Mans, World Touring Cars, GP2, GP3, World GT Championship, V8 Supercars, DTM, Indycar, World Rally….gosh, the list is practically endless. If it has wheels and an engine I’ll watch it.

My favourite drivers that are racing currently are (in no particular order):
Mat Jackson (BTCC)
Paul O’Neill (BTCC)
Matt Neal (BTCC)
Steven Kane (BTCC)
Gordon Shedden (BTCC)
Sebastian Vettel (F1)
Michael Schumacher (F1)
Felipe Massa (F1)
Fernando Alonso (F1)
Kamui Kobayashi (F1)
Robert Kubica (F1)
Timo Glock (F1)
Heikki Kovalainen (F1)
Sergio Perez (F1)
Mikko Hirvonen (WRC)
Jari-Matti Latvala (WRC)
Valentino Rossi (MotoGP)
Marco Simoncelli (MotoGP)
Andrea Dovizioso (MotoGP)
Mattias Ekstrom (DTM)
David Coulthard (DTM)
Timo Scheider (DTM)
Andy Priaulx (WTCC)
Yvan Muller (WTCC)
James Thompson (WTCC)
Tom Kristensen (Le Mans)
Allan McNish (Le Mans)

I’ll probably remember a bunch more later but I’ll leave it at that for now. You may notice that despite being British, I generally don’t support British drivers in F1. Unfortunately on some British motorsport sites people can be a bit funny because of that, but Jenson Button I’m indifferent too and Lewis Hamilton I’m not a fan. I prefer the likes of Sebastian Vettel’s driving style and personality much more to my taste.

Some of the tracks I like from the world of racing:
Silverstone
Donington Park
Oulton Park
Monza
Spa
Suzuka
Monaco
Laguna Seca

Whereas the teams I like are Scuderia Ferrari, Red Bull Racing and Sauber.

I’m also a fan of karting, and I enjoy doing it with friends. It’s a great thing to do, it really helps build up your arm and neck muscles particularly, and people who kart frequently have been found to be better drivers on the road. You get a great sense of speed with you being so low to the ground, so I’d advise you to try it out.

I’m also a keen writer. As you can expect, I write pretty much all the time about racing. I wish to become a motorsport journalist (or failing that working on P.R for a race team) and at the moment I’m working for a local paper as well as a couple of websites. Generally I haven’t had that many people I’ve been able to talk to at school due to motorsport not becoming very popular amongst young people till recently, and I’ve loved having the ability to type my thoughts and communicate with other like minded people, wherever they live. That’s why if I’m not here or busy writing, I’ll most likely be posting on numerous motorsport forums.

Other than journalistic writing, I also like writing stories. I’m currently working on a racing related action story which I’m posting here; you’ll find the link to the topic to the left of this bar. Check it out.
English has always been my favourite subject at school. I’m currently studying English Language and Literature as well as ICT at A2 Level in England. Language especially is fascinating to me, as there are many things that the subject covers. I grateful I’m able to speak such an interesting and complex language.

In terms of other languages I speak, I can speak little bits of Italian, German and Spanish, but not loads.

Other sports that I enjoy are winter sports. I’ve always been a huge fan of the Winter Olympics and particularly like Ski Cross and Snowboard cross, as well as the ice hockey. I feel that the normal Olympics are quite tame and tedious really, whilst the Winter Olympics are much faster and much more dangerous. If an athlete gets it wrong, they could seriously end up injuring themselves. Ski Cross and Snowboard cross are always so unpredictable, there’s nearly always drama in the races and often a photo finish at the end. I became interested in ice hockey after watching the brilliant Olympic final between Canada and the USA and since then I’ve become really interested in the NHL especially. It’s hard to catch the action as there aren’t any TV channels I get that show NHL, but I catch up on the highlights through various video hosting sites. My favourite team is the Boston Bruins. I also like the downhill and slalom disciplines of the ski racing, it’s incredible how precise the racers have to be to get a good time and to avoid crashing and also how quick they go also. I know I wouldn’t want to be going over 80mph on skis!

Red Bull Crashed Ice is another winter sport I adore. It is completely mental but so action packed. I generally believe the likes of Crashed Ice, Ski Cross and Snowboard Cross are the future of sport. They provide a great amount of action in a really short space of time.

When winter sports are on it certainly makes the motorsport “off” season go at lot faster!

What else? Ah yes! Bionicle and Lego. These two are two important things of my youth. I started collecting Bionicle right from the start. My Bionicle story began when I went shopping with my mum to buy some Digimon and Robot Wars toys (another two important things from my youth), and I bought Kopaka as I thought he looked really robot-like (I was really interested in robotics back then) and I loved building him and playing with him. I got Lewa two days later and would play with my Mum, Grandma and Sister as we swung the weapons and tried to knock the other player’s mask off.

Things just went from there. I got more into the story line, bought more and more sets and became really obsessed. I’d say my interest in the theme peaked in about summer of ’03-’04, when I was thinking about Bionicle all the time. I wasn’t a really big MOC-er, more a fan of playing with them.

I was disappointed when sets eventually stopped being produced with gears, as that really took away a lot of the playability for me. Since then, I feel the story has got too complex, the sets too expensive and the packaging too bulky. I’m nowhere near as interested in Bionicle as I was a few years ago, but still have my collection in a box. Unfortunately, due to lack of interest and also not having enough time due to school and other commitments, I don’t play with them much these days either. Some day I think I’ll get that box out and have a trip down memory lane though. Hmm…

The other Lego theme I’m interested in is unsurprisingly the “Racers” theme. I collect the Tiny Turbo cars and still play with them regularly today. Most my Lego creations are now to do with motorsport, I like building cars or pit garages and I have this Lego dream of wanting to build an entire F1 paddock with the Grand Stands, 12 garages, trucks, commentary booths, race control, the podium, etc, etc. Sadly I don’t have nearly enough bricks for that at the moment, but hopefully when I’m a bit older, I’ll be able to complete my fantasy.

Talking of building stuff, I love it either when I’m at the seaside or if it snows. On the beach, I build complex sand F1 cars, and the same applies when it snows, but obviously just out of the white stuff. Obviously they don’t stick around long, they get washed away or melt, but it gives me a great deal of satisfaction when I’m building them or have completed them and a stranger will walk by and say “Hey, look, a race car!” I always take a picture of my finished creation and it’s great to see how I’ve progressed recently.

In terms of other things I collect, I guess it’s pretty obscure. I’ve collected marbles from a young age. Some of the designs just look so cool really, and I always feel much more relaxed if I’ve got some marbles in my hands, lol. I also collect diecast cars which I play with a lot and also I collect race driver’s autographs. I’ve managed to get over 50 BTCC autographs since I started going to races in 2002, unfortunately F1 autographs are harder to come by. I did get to meet David Coulthard once though, and it turns out he’s a really nice guy. It’s great to feel that these guys who earn so much money and have such an incredible job are actually just normal human beings who enjoy chatting to their fans.

I also hold an interest in magic. I know some good card tricks and it’s great to see people’s looks of amazement when you pull off a trick effectively. I also enjoyed being stunned by magic myself, that “Wait, how the heck did he just do that?” sort of moment.

Related to that, I also enjoy playing cards. With friends and family we always put a bit of money into the table and it’s always great fun. Obviously I wouldn’t gamble for real, but playing a bit of non-serious poker with friends and family is a great way to unwind and relax imo.

I like playing monopoly too, and have two versions, the original and a here and now version that came out before the electronic one, which I don’t like the sound of. Strangely, I haven’t won at monopoly in ages…I guess I’m just too kind when it comes to making deals with people when trading property, etc.

Castle ruins are another thing that fascinates me. I wouldn’t say I’m a great fan of history, but particularly castles I always find interesting. It’s interesting to imagine what they’d be like when they were new, and to imagine the sorts of efforts that it took to build, as well as taking an interest in knights and that sort of stuff too, obviously.

I’ve been fortunate to grow up in a family that has good cars. My dad owns a Lotus Élan that he built from a burnt out wreck before I was born. It was so badly damaged that it was registered as scrap and at first the DVLA wouldn’t grant it a road license, but now its considered one of the best examples in the country. Coincidentally, it’s my mum and dad’s wedding car too.

My dad also owns a Ferrari 355 which we’ve had success with in concours competitions. These are events where the best presented car wins and the judging is very complex. In all, we’ve won 13 trophies from regional and national events, the highlights of which would be winning the Champion’s class twice in the Northern regional events.

I’m not generally a bit fan of modern day music. I personally believe music was better in the old days when there was no technology that allowed “artists” to be autotuned or even to allow them to mime at concerts. I find it really dishonest that some singers will mime at a concert when their fans have paid hard earned money to go and see them perform. If they aren’t prepared to sing for real, they should be honest enough to admit it and give refunds to the people who’ve gone. Some of the rare modern music I do like though includes Pendulum, U2, Kasabian and Muse.

I am a gaming fan. I’m a traditionalist and play games through my computer, I really see the likes of Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo as over commercialised, over priced….things! My collection of games I own:
Lego Racers 1
Lego Racers 2
Drome Racers
Bionicle 1
Bionicle 2
Geoff Crammond’s Grand Prix 4
Robots
Robot Wars Extreme Destruction
Madagascar
Cars
Worms 4 Mayhem
Heroes of the Pacific
Flatout
Toca Race Driver
Toca Race Driver 2
Toca Race Driver 3
Race Driver GRID
F1 ‘10

I’m currently addicted to F1 ’10 by Codemasters. Not only is it the first F1 game in 4 years, it’s the first in something like 8 since the last F1 game for PC, so long overdue! It’s an excellent game, has some problems, but not a bad attempted from Codemasters’ first stab of the Formula One title. Can’t wait for when they bring out F1 ’11 and also DiRT 2! I’m also looking forward to Shift 2 as well.

I’m also a player of pool as well as snooker. I’ll admit, they’re pretty boring sports to watch on TV, but playing against a friend they are great fun. I only really started playing in ’09 and have pretty quickly picked up the technique.

In terms of movies, again, I’m not a huge fan. I don’t generally go the cinema often and I could list my favourite movies on the fingers of one hand. Grand Prix, Le Mans, Cars, The Italian Job (the original, obviously) and any James Bond titles. Cars 2 FTW in 2011! Woot! In terms of DVDs, again, I have a lot related to motorsport but also have Top Gear DVDs and the Cars movie.

It might surprise you to learn that I’m generally not a big reader, despite studying English Literature. I mean that in terms of novels, I’m not one to read a novel based on interests, they are purely down to what I have to read for Lit. I do read lots of magazines though, mostly related to motorsport. I read AUTOSPORT and F1 Racing religiously, and I sometimes pick up a copy of Top Gear magazine. I’ve also started reading Motorsport, I got a copy for Christmas as it contained an interview with my favourite driver, Sebastian Vettel, and it’s an interesting magazine. In terms of books I do read, again, they’re often motorsport related. I read a lot of season review books for things like Le Mans and F1. I got the official F1 2010 review for Christmas also, and it’s a fantastic book, great quality with some stunning photographs. I also read a lot of racing driver’s biographies and have Andy Priaulx’s, David Coulthard’s, Michael Schumacher’s, Jackie Stewart’s and Valentino Rossi’s. They are all generally fascinating and give a great insight into some incredible people. I’m also a fan of the Edge Chronicle series; I have all the books from the series and generally believe they are better than Harry Potter. My favourite from the series would probably be the last book, it has quite an emotional ending and really inspires you to think what might happen in the future. Shame the authors have finished the series now though. My favourite fiction book undoubtedly is Hover Car Racer. I can’t recall the writer, but it has inspired my own racing story.

Writing is something I really enjoy. I write in all different styles, journalistic writing, story writing, anything. I'm currently a writer for my local paper, the Derbyshire Times, and you can see what I write for them by clicking the link to my website. Please do check it out, I appreciate any feedback or comments you have. I mentioned my racing story above which is a project I'm working on. It's entitled "The World Race" and is an adventure type story following a 17 year old boy, Xanth Kubota, in his Formula One career. I posted a bit of it here, but clearly there's not the level of interest as I get elsewhere. I'm debating setting up a seperate blog to post chapters of that story though, it is now up to 40 pages!

I also like telling jokes and generally making people laugh. I’m told I’m very funny and I have quite a dry sense of humour, so don’t take everything I say seriously! When people are down, it’s nice to cheer them up and say funny things. Some of my favourite comedians are:
Jack Dee
Jack Whitehall
Michael McIntyre
Al Murray
Rich Hall
Russell Howard
Lee Mack

In terms of other TV shows I like, the list is as follows:
Top Gear (British version, obviously)
Total Wipeout (again, British version)
QI
Mock the Week
Have I Got News for You
The Magicians
Most Annoying People
Britain’s Got Talent
Russell Howard’s Good News
Not Going Out

Top Gear is probably my favourite. The three presenters have a great personality and work really well together, and it makes a change from the age where everything has to be politically correct and super professional. Total Wipeout is also a blast, it’s presented by one of the TG presenters, Richard Hammond and some of the comments he makes about contestants are just hilarious. Nothing is funnier than watching people fall off stuff into stuff, especially when they’ve volunteered to do it! Mock The Week and Have I Got News for You are just very funny programmes, QI is very interesting and you learn things you never knew even if it is pretty random stuff. I’ve only recently started to watch The Magicians, but some of the stuff they do is just incredible. The Most Annoying People programmes at the end of each year are always entertaining to watch at the end of each year. Britain’s Got Talent is entertaining to watch and Russell Howard is one of my favourite comedians and makes so great comments about current news stories. I've only recently started watching Not Going Out, but Lee Mack and co. always make me laugh.

Photography is another interest of mine. I took it at GCSE level in school, but hated every moment of it as the teacher was hopeless. I enjoyed the challenge it gave me though, like one project I did was portraying “red” through black and white photographs. I always take photographs when I’m at races; it’s a very difficult skill to get good photos at races as the cars move just so fast. I wouldn’t consider photography as a career, but I still like taking photos as just a way to capture memorable moments.

I’m an avid user of Twitter. I joined a couple of years ago and have been using it ever since. I generally like it much more than Facebook, and I like the way you can just dip in and out of conversations. I also am a fan of the way F1 teams allow access to their fans through a weekend via Twitter, it makes you feel as if you’re actually at the track, even when you aren’t. I've recently made my Twitter feed private, but if you send a request to JamesyF1 I'll accept you.

I’m hoping to be able to go to Sheffield Hallam this September. I have 5 conditional offers from them, so now it is just a matter of deciding which course I want to do…oh and getting the grades! I’m really motivated to get to Uni, school has got so boring and repetitive that I’m ready for a change in life, and university is that change. I’ll be either studying a journalism course or something to do with PR, so yep, already looking forward to the new challenges that it’ll throw at me. Exciting times!

I’m secular. I don’t believe that there is a God and I have no problems with people who do. What I don’t like though is the way it’s taught to us in school, the way that from a young age we have Christianity forced upon us. Kids at a young age should be allowed to make their own mind up on whether they think there is a God or not, not to simply be brainwashed into having to think that they have to think that there is.

I also take an interest in politics. I enjoy having debates about various political issues, but clearly here the admins don’t feel we’re grown up enough to be allowed to discuss politics. Shame. I don’t particularly support any party, especially after Nick Clegg lied to all the students; I just take a casual interests in how things go. I think you have to, in my opinion; you are quite ignorant if you don’t take a slight interest in what they are doing. After all, the decisions they are making in these tough times affect all our lives.

For the next section I’m just going to include some random quick fire facts about me, inspired to some degree from the F1 website used through the year to interview all the drivers.

Favourite colour: Yellow
Favourite animal: Tiger
Favourite place in the world: Silverstone/Home
Favourite country in the world: Italy
If I could live anywhere, where would it be? A really remote village, even more than where I currently live.
Favourite meal: Bangers and mash, a proper British meal!
Favourite drink: Apple juice
Best meal I can make? I did GCSE Food Tech, so anything really. I particularly like making cakes and things though.
Nicknames: Singo, Jamesy.
Things I can’t stand: People who walk slow and take up the entire path, people who are constantly late, people who play their music too loud, dishonest people, small crowded places.
Worst buy: Probably buying a World Touring Car PC game a few years back. I installed it, but it never worked so I just sold it back and got a refund.
Most embarrassing moment: I’m not sure, some of the things I wrote on forums a few years ago I look back at and feel embarrassed.
Favourite weather: 15-20 Degrees Celcius, slightly cloudy, light breeze.
Favourite season: Spring/summer.
Last time I was really furious: At school, just at the sheer incompetence of some of the teachers and their inability to be useful!
Website I visit the most: Autosport/Total F1.
Scared of: Flying.
Favourite pass time: Writing.

You thought that was the end? Hahah, you’re very much mistaken. Here are some of my favourite quotes from various things.

“You have to start with hello” James May, Top Gear.

“I had a great idea recently; I want to sell this idea to a fancy dress shop. They could buy a load of McLaren team shirts for people to buy and if people asked you what you'd come as at the next fancy dress party, you could answer "A cheat"! Think of the money they'd make. Now if only I knew of such a shop....” Myself to a friend who’s a McLaren fan.

“What would that make Ferrari fans then? ********s!” His response.

“It’s the world wide paedophile club.” My Dad on the Catholic Church based on the recent scandal.

“But isn’t that an essential quality of a politician, insincerity?” A friend to me after I said how insincere I found some of the comments the party leaders were making about various things.

"And so you touch this limit, something happens and you suddenly can go a little bit further. With your mind power, your determination, your instinct, and the experience as well, you can fly very high." Ayrton Senna.

"Because in a split second, it's gone." Ayrton Senna.
"Being second is to be the first of the ones who lose." Ayrton Senna.

"Lotta people go through life doing things badly. Racing's important to men who do it well. When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting." Steve McQueen in Le Mans.

"Auto racing, bull fighting, and mountain climbing are the only real sports ... all others are games.” Ernest Hemingway

“Understeer works like this, your car goes straight on, you crash into a tree and you die. Oversteer works like this, the back of the car comes out and you go off the road, crash into a tree and you die. Oversteer is better because you don’t see the tree that kills you." Richard Hammond, Top Gear.

“Now it’s time to find out how quickly it can crash on our track.” James May, Top Gear.

“Hey this is something I’ve always wanted to do; I’ve worked in television for 20 years and never had the chance yet, okay…”
“Back to the studio.”
“Hey, that’s my line! That’s what I wanted to say! May, May you *******!”
“Yeah, what I thought I’d do is put the fire out and then say…”
“Back to the studio!”
Clarkson, Hammond and May, Top Gear.

“Some say that his favourite airline pilot is Mark Webber.” Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear.

“What do we want?”
“Aston Martins!”
“When do we want them?”
“Now!”
Clarkson, Hammond and May, Top Gear

“2, 4, 6, 8 Jacqui Smith’s husband likes to mast…hang on, I can’t do that one can I?”
Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear.

“Great day for a race this, Friday the 13th.” Richard Hammond, Top Gear

“How hard can it be?” Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear

“Don’t turn on a wave, wait….or something.”
“I don’t know, I got scared.”
Clarkson and Hammond, Top Gear.

“James will be exaggerating…James isn’t exaggerating.” Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear.

“I can understand why the Audi engineer I criticised earlier committed suicide. I want to commit suicide reading this, it’s just Ofcom won’t allow it.” Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear.

“I brought in our special weapons man who had learned in the armed forces how to have a pixellated face.” Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear.

“I can't remember if I took my malaria pill this morning. If I were a girl, I'd be pregnant a lot!” Richard Hammond, Top Gear.

“I’ll cut your ****ing head off. And you will need a bleep there BBC2.” James May, Top Gear.

“What a journey! 700 miles on my bike, 250 miles on a train, and about 50 miles on my face.” Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear.

“You look at this and you think "what noise did this make when it was alive"? Did it go moooo, or did it go tweet tweet tweet, or did it go neigh! I think it went ruff! rrrrr-ruf! But it's delicious.” Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear.

“So I go into the dealer and I say "I'd like a Lamborghini, can I have one that's not on fire?" James May, Top Gear.

“Acceleration, not nationalisation - of the banks, although obviously it's easy to make a credible case for state ownership of other industries such as utilities!”
“Catchy!”
Hammond and May, Top Gear.

“But that's 15 times the price of the car! What you're saying is, I'm going to completely write-off the car 15 times a year.” Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear.

"So running, then stop."
"I think that describes all break downs"
"'Running then stop'"
Clarkson, May and Hammond, Top Gear

"So some useful consumer advice there, if you are thinking of buying one of these cars - which you aren't 'cos you can't."
Hammond, Top Gear.

"F1 is the series for a focus on high-performance vehicles, incredible talents, brilliant strategies, unbelievable drama, and breathtaking overtakes. This is a driving contest, not X-Factor." A friend of mine.

"There are a few people who doubted me too, so hello to them." Mark Webber after his first F1 victory.

“We can’t change yesterday, but we can change tomorrow.” Sebastian Vettel.

“I accepted that sometimes things don’t go your way, but in the long term there’s something called justice.” Sebastian Vettel.

“Any mountain on this planet has been climbed, once or many times, so obviously there's a big mountain to climb but it’s not impossible.” Sebastian Vettel.

“Give me a roof over my head, some food to eat and a fast car. That's all I need.
That's all I'll ever need.” Robert Kubica.

"Well of course it is, but there is the unseen drama of the tactics, the split-second decision making, the mind-boggling physics that keeps the car on the track...and then there is the actual racing. I honestly can't believe that with the stunning locations, incredible driving talent, danger, bravery and political manoeuvrings on and off the track that the whole country isn't sitting down at 12:10 to watch the racing." BBC F1 presenter on people who F1 is just driving around in circles.

  1. Actually, hang on! I've got it. My A level ICT ability shining through once again! :P I'm online now.

  2. Hmm, it hasn't come up. Maybe I need to add you seeing as I blocked you before. I can't recall your adress, so just post it on my profile or in a PM if you prefer.

  3. I think you'll vae to re-add me. theoldhairpin@hotmail.com

  4. Do you still have me blocked? =P

  5. Hey do you still have an MSN account?

  6. Seeing as it makes more sense and I have more than 400 characters to say on it (probably), I'll PM you too.

  7. What do think of the latest testing results?

  8. I have to agree with you on that one... We'll see though.

  9. We'll see. Bruno's a great guy and a solid driver, but I think he's been helped an awful lot in his career by using the "Senna" name.

  10. Yeah, that would be a good idea if Senna doesn't perform. But you never know, Senna might become super man and win every race up until the Spanish Grand Prix if the car is right for him. =P

  11. I think they'll need someone better than Senna. Kubica's out till at least the Spanish Grand Prix, so I think it'd be worth giving Heidfeld a call. He was always there or thereabouts Robert's pace when they were team mates at BMW.

  12. For me, I just want him to get 100% better. The racing can wait. His condition remains bad, but the early progress he's making sounds encouraging.

  13. Yeah, hope he gets better. I wich he could be back soon, but I have doubts he'll be back in 6 months though, he needs time to heal. But yeah, any though on Senna driving a car that's painted up the same way his uncle's was?
