I Am Merely One

I lie on top of the dugout on a baseball field, listening to soulful music, and staring up at the stars in the dark on a clear-skied, cold evening, alone. They peek through the black-blue dome of the sky, a thousand lights winking down at me, as my breath rises in a cloud of misty grey to meet them. The song pounds into my ears and tingles through my whole body. Rough shingles of the dugout's roof are the only thing keeping me grounded, keeping me from soaring up to explore the infinite deep above me.

It is gigantic, and I miniscule. These stars are so far away that the light I now see shining from their places has taken anywhere from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of years to reach me, and yet... it has reached me. The unstoppable energies of the universe conspire and cooperate to bring things even as insignificant as the barely noticeable glow of these stars to everywhere within reach, so that all who see them may observe, and contemplate, and wonder, and wish.

This sky will always be there, even after we have all passed, even after our world has fallen... it will always be there.

I am merely one.

We are merely one.

But the universe is one as well.

We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.

That's what this post made me think of. You is being philosophical, you is!

Though worded poetically and beatifully, I must humbly disagree with your opinion here; though each of us are one, we are, when put together, many. Each individual is 'one', but several people can never be so.

As well can it be said that we are as 'one' as the universe, if that´s your point. The creativity and constructivity of our souls can only be hindered by the mortality of our bodies. Once we realize this, we will understand that it is at the same time what´s keeping us from not being 'one'. Because if we were one, we would each be less than one. We cannot be more and less at the same time, the sadness of the truth must in this case be.

Still, the one on the top will always wonder what´s above. It´s the nature of human.

The thing about the sky that will stay; while this is true, it is nothing to care about. Immortallity is said to be the greatest curse of all. We can act towards the sky as we generally act towards anything else without our luck.

By, "we are merely one," I was referring to the fact that no matter what happens here on earth, we're still only one planet, in the face of unimaginably infinite others.

And I never implied that we are immortal. By saying that the sky will always be there, I was reflecting on how even wen we as a race or as a planet die, that same sky will be there. I was, through that statement, talking about the universe's immortality, not ours.

...but that still won´t make one extra-terristial (sp?) individual a part of humanity, right? Earth is not a definition of someone, but merely a place where all known examples of our species happens to reside, if I am not mistaken? :)

I know it´s the sky's (as well as the universe's) immortality; and that is the immortality I was reffering to, as well. When I say without our luck, I mean it is not as lucky as to be able to look towards the end, dying, as we can. That gives us motivation and a story, whereas the universe, while being, as you point out, infinitely bigger and more complex than us, will remain the same universe as always, with its contents having more of a story than itself.
