The Mt Awards: Best Game Of The Decade And More

MT Zehvor

Well, since all the games for this year are out, it's time for me to hand out my less than prestiged awards for video games of the decade. Here we go, starting with the character awards:

CHARACTER AWARDS:

Best Hero: Master Chief(Halo): Halo did a really nice job I think of connecting you with the characters in their games, while big Nintendo franchises such as Metroid and Zelda didn't as much. Modern Warfare did a nice job of it with Price, but Master Chief edges Price out because of just how cool he is.

Runner ups: Samus Aran(Metroid Prime), Price(MW), Solid Snanke(MGS)

Best Villain: Wesker(Resident Evil): It's one thing to fight a viral outbreak alongside teammates; it's another thing entirely to completely abandon them when they need you most. I remember getting so ticked at this guy towards the end of RE: 5, but hey, I guess that's what makes the definition of a good villian.

Runner ups: Ninetails(Okami), Dark Samus(Metroid Prime 2 & 3), Grunts(Halo) and the Nazis, which are in about half the games made today

Best Sidekick: Issun(Okami): Maybe this guy was a bit of a sicko, but he never left your side(until the end of the game) and he did the talking for you.(literally, because Amaterasu can't talk) Plus he ends up saving Amaterasu at the end in probably the best game ending I've ever seen.

Runner ups: Cortana(Halo), HK-47(KotoR), Yoshi(Mario, hey, look, Mario actually did get an award. Well, sorta)

WORST video game character: Tails(Sonic): Ok, maybe there haven't been many Sonic games this decade, but come on, this was just pitiful. I really doubt anyone ever cared about him at all.

IN GAME AWARDS:

Best Story: CoD 4: Modern Warfare: Way to take a step away from the land of Nazis, Infinity Wad. I liked this story for two reasons: A, it's very plausible, and B, I really liked the idea of countries uniting in an all out attempt to stop an evil group. Just sounds cool.

Runner ups: Halo 3: ODST, Metroid Prime, Borderlands

Best Ending: Okami: Epic ending is epic. Yami steals Amaterasu's powers, only for them to be regained when Issun(your sidekick that left you earlier) restores them all in one giant effort by all the people in the land. And then you become like 50 times more powerful and own Yami.

Runner ups: Halo 3, Modern Warfare 2

Most Confusing Plotline: Assassin's Creed 2: Weird time travel, and then figuring out your like a prophet, and then what? Really confusing. I had to actually look it up online to find out what the heck was going on. It was a good game, but never the less, still confusing.

Best Boss Fight: Colossi(Shadow of the Colossus): Yeah, could this guy get a bit bigger please? Colossi has to be the biggest boss fight I've ever faced, scary as heck, and yet...it was surprisingly fun. I don't know. One of those things you have to experience for yourself.

Runner ups: "The Boss"(MGS3), Ganon(Ocarina of Time), Yami(Okami)

Best subplot: The Arbiter becoming a good guy(Halo 2): Epic, epic, more epic, AND you get to play as him in the game as well. Plus the fight with "Mr. Jetpack" was amazing.

Now it's time for the awards for the video games themselves:

OVERALL AWARDS:

Most Fun Video Game: Assassin's Creed 2: Maybe it's just me, but climbing onto roofs and knocking guards off never gets old. The game is also extremely "diverse," meaning there are just so many different things you do during the game, boss fights, stalking people, and jumping off of 50 foot high towers into hay bales.

Runner ups: Little Big Planet, SSBB

Hardest Video Game: Metroid Prime 2: According to Retro Studios, this was intended to be the hardest of the Prime series, and indeed it was. Especially on hard mode. Of course, nothing matches Halo 3 on Mythic, but that requires a lot of extra work to get to that status.

Runner ups: ...do we have any? I don't think there were that many hard games this decade.

Easiest Video Game: Modern Warfare 2: Gee, why don't you just give the invincibility cheat to everyone? You might as well. The game is ridiculous easy. I beat it on Veteran in about an hour and thirty minutes, and some claim to have been able to do it in under an hour.

Runner ups: Halo 3: ODST, Super Mario Galaxy

Overrated Game of the Decade: Super Mario Galaxy: I'll never figure out WHY it was rated so dang high. It was pretty darn bad in my opinion, and once you figured out what to do in a boss fight, you never did anything different. The corny plotline and fact that there's a giant whirlpool right below you almost everywhere you go didn't exactly help SMG's standing.

Runner ups: Madworld. Madworld. And Madworld again.

Game with most potential: Borderlands: The thing that got this game was it's repetitiveness. Go find this, then fight the bad guy. As fun as it was, the same thing over and over again got a little tiresome. When the sequel comes out, though(they've already announced there will be one) I expect great things.

Worst Game of the Decade: The Rogue Warrior. I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT GET IT AWAY FROM ME. Gamespot rated this a 1.5 out of 10, which was probably too high IMO. So freaking repetitive....blargh....

And now it's time for...

THE BEST GAME OF THE DECADE:

(prepare to call me a homer)

OKAMI: Before you call me out on this, how many of you have actually played this game?

That's what I thought. The storyline is so unique, and they found a way to perfectly bring together a great idea and Japanese culture into one big great mass of awesomeness. The boss battles are great, the places are probably some of the most memorable you'll ever see in a video game, and the ending is breath-taking. Who would've ever thought that Capcom could make a game this good?

Runner ups: Metroid Prime, Halo 2, Modern Warfare

Okami is a very good game but there are definitely better games released in the last ten years. It wasn't made by Capcom either - it was developed by Clover Studios and published by Capcom.

SMG is one of the greatest 3D platformers ever made. Creative level design, solid gameplay and controls, an amazing soundtrack, some of the best graphics on Wii, etc.

Also by decade you seem to be only including games from the last few years, not 10. Ocarina of Time wasn't even released in this decade either.

i did try okami at a friends house i thought it was cool how you draw stuff and it becomes real

It is very cool. They're making a remake of it on the DS, which looks good, but then again...it's the DS...and no Clover Studios this time around.

Technically, yes, but that's like saying that Retro Studios did all the work in making Metroid Prime and Nintendo had no hand in it, which is complete bogus. My main point was that Capcom isn't exactly one of the best game makers of our time.

Whatever you say. I played Super Mario Galaxy and I thought it was incredibly dumb. The plotline had me halfway interested at first, but repetitious boss fights and the fact that you always had a swirling black whirlpool of death below you really took the beauty of the game away. That planet with the water speedway thing was cool, though. It was definitely a good game, but I don't think it was deserving of the 9.7 ratings it was getting on Gamespot and the likes.

As for the Ocarina of Time thing, that's my fault. I PLAYED it for the first time this decade, and forgot that it was made before. Scratch that off.

As for only the past few years, well, when were most of the good games made? Name the five best games made before 2006. First two Metroid Primes, Halo 2, Metroid Fusion, and KoToR would be my list. Fusion is a 2D game, so it's not going to take any awards other than maybe best boss fight, MP2 doesn't really have anything that's better than MP1 except for possibly a better Samus design, and MP1, Halo 2, and KoToR are all on this list. So yeah, there aren't a ton of games from pre 2006 on this list, but then again, what would you put on there?

HE'S NOT MR. JETPACK HE'S SESA 'REFUMEE

Sor-wy. I always forget Elite names outside of Thel Vadamee. (I may have even misspelled that one too. "The Arbiter" is so much simpler)

And Price was in CoD 2, too.

Yeah, but not until like halfway through the game, where you find him disguised as a Russian captive or something...

The thing is, Metroid was an existing franchise before Retro Studios developed it, so Nintendo had a major role in developing it.

All Capcom did towards Okami was fund it and publish it. Capcom have made many, many excellent games too. The Mega Man and Street Fighter series are some of the best of all time.

Fusion is a 2D game, so it's not going to take any awards other than maybe best boss fight

>Implying that 2D games cannot possibly be better than 3D games

There are many, many, many 2D games that are better than 3D games. Not going to bother to list them all, but Metroid Fusion and Super Metroid are just as good as the Prime series. While the Metroid Prime games are some of the best FPSs ever made, Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion are some of the best 2D platformer-shooter hybrids ever made.

Also good games released in from 1999-2005

-Cave Story (game of the decade)

-Super Smash Bros. Melee

-The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask/Wind Waker/Minish Cap

-Golden Sun

-Banjo Tooie

-Perfect Dark

-Rayman 2

-Chrono Cross

-Final Fantasy VIII

-Half Life 2

and a ridiculous amount more

So Galaxy wasn't that great because the boss fights were repetitive, and the black holes took away the beauty. What.

There was a fair amount of variation between each of the boss fights, though each of the individual fights were a bit repetitive. I agree that the boss fights were not one of the highlights of the game, but they were by no means bad. The black holes were simply a replacement for bottomless pits, as they wouldn't have worked when you can see the entire planet Mario is on. The issue you seem to have with them is graphical, not to do with gameplay. No, SMG doesn't have the best graphics ever, but it has some of the best on the Wii and has most importantly, some of the best gameplay ever.

EDIT: why am I bothering with this I wonder and typing up so much

So Galaxy wasn't that great because the boss fights were repetitive, and the black holes took away the beauty. What.

*sigh* If you need a complete review from me saying exactly what I didn't like, then fine, here's one.

For the regular fights: Most of them just consisted on jumping on another person and watching them fall off the edge. That gets a little old after a while. Heck, even Fancy Pants 2 is more inventive than that.

For the boss fights: No, they were not all the same, but once you figured out what to do, that's all you did. Example: The Lava Octopus, just hit it's lava rocks back at it the whole time. For Mega Leg: Climb up and get missiles to follow you into the barrier and then the core.

The Black Holes: I know they were a replacement, but what I'm saying is it gets a little annoying having to focus on dodging a black hole every single freaking time. I guess it's not so much that it's a black hole that I have a problem with as it is the entire concept of there's always a pit below you so you better not fall into it. It makes it a lot harder to see some of the surroundings in the game, and the levels that it was easier to avoid I enjoyed a lot more.

>Implying that 2D games cannot possibly be better than 3D games

I'm not implying that. I'm implying that they usually aren't, since 3D games have so much better graphics and everything you can do with a 3D world. In my opinion, Super Metroid was better than Metroid Prime, and it might be my favorite game of all time. The main problem is that there aren't many stellar 2D games made in this decade, and I think even you'd agree with that.

As for Fusion being as good as Prime, I can't agree with you there. It was far too linear for my taste, although I really did like the idea of the SA-X tracking you the whole time.

Windwaker, while good, I don't think it was deserving of a mention on the best games list of the decade. Rayman 2 would have had a chance if it hadn't been made in 1999. The main problem I had with Half Life 2 is the annoying amount of puzzles and the whole Gravity Gun thing. It reminds me of the problem I had with portal, it takes so long to get used to the concept of the gun in the first place that you really can't enjoy the game on the first time through.

How could anyone feel connected to Master Chief? He has less personality than a robot.

Since you liked Okami so much though you'd have to try Ico (2001) and Shadow of the Colossus (2005). The three of them are always grouped together when people talk about Video games as art, and Shadow of the Colossus was the #1 game of Destructoid's game of the decade list.

whoops excuse my inability to count

was counting 1999 as part of the decade for some reason

There's always been bottomless pits you have to watch out for in platformers. It's a staple of the genre. If you don't like that, don't play platformers is my advice.

I can think of many great 2D games released this decade:

-Cave Story (possibly the best game ever)

-Braid

-World of Goo

-Metroid Fusion

-Golden Sun/TLA

-The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap/Phantom Hourglass/Spirit Tracks (although the last 2 contain some portions in 3D)

-Muramasa: The Demon Blade

-New Super Mario Bros. Wii/DS

-Mega Man 9

and many more; I don't feel like going searching through lists of games

I think 2D games in general have better graphics actually. Games like Muramasa and Braid are amazing to look at. I wouldn't say there's more possibilities with 3D either, just different ones.

At QQQQ: See my favorite boss. I haven't tried Ico though.

And now it just comes down to a question of which game each person likes better. I feel like Okami is the best game of the decade, and while I don't feel any of these games really pose any challenge to it, that's obviously just a matter of opinion.

Not at all, although they are some of the best games there are. Metroid Prime is classified as an adventure game, Okami is definitely not a shooter. And out of the 13 awards WORTH winning, 7 weren't shooters.

If you're going to accuse me of something, actually have some evidence to back yourself up, k?

What? No, not MW2, CoD 2. With the Price with the red beret and Lee-Enfield.
